Selecting a Tivo for Best Upgrade Potential
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Any thoughts on selecting a TiVo unit for flexibility and ease of upgrading .......
It seems as if there are what you might term basic upgrades such as increasing recording capacity and then there are more advanced upgrades such as web access (I hope this does not fall foul of the rules on posting to mention this but this is not extraction or stealing) and things beyond that.
Based on searching this forum and others and some of the recent publication that can be reviewed online at onlamp.com it appears as if owning a Series 2 TiVo limits your potential upgrade options?
It is possible to upgrade Series 2 with software version 4+ but everything seems much harder (not such a well trodden path). That being the case what are people's thoughts on purchasing a slightly older model TiVo unit (Series 1) with software v3 or less. Is this viable? Will the software automatically get upgraded with the daily call at some point.
What make and model have people had good experinces with?
Is it possibel to then link a Series 1 model with a a newer Model 2 device with Home Media option and transfer recordings between two units on different versions of software?

I myself have had the tivo only around a month or so now. I currently subscribe or am a Lifetime member to TV PLUS. The only upgrade i could see doing with my tivo is adding second hard drive or once HD compatible units come out selling this and upgrading to an HD model. I could not see doing anything else to the model I have now> dam thing does just about everything but produce the show!

The most flexible units for upgrading are Series1 units. If you have satellite, go with a Sony SAT-T60, Philips DSR6000 or Hughes GXCEBOT (they are all the same, except for the remote controls). If you don't have satellite, or prefer a standalone box, go with a Sony SVR-2000 or any Philips HDR model, they are all the same, except for differences in the remote.
Why are these units better?
LBA48 support for > 137GB drives -- can't do this on a Series2
Networking support -- you can use the CacheCard, TurboNet card, and install a variety of hacks on the unit relatively easily - this includes TiVoWeb, video archival and many other enhancements available on these forums and others. You won't be able to HMO on these units, however - so if you really want HMO, stick with a Series2.

Thanks for all the help and good information.
I have 2 DirecTivo's scheduled for install on 2-18-2004.
I ordered a 160gb Samsung drive from Newegg.com for 103.00 (free shipping). If that goes hitch free, I will prolly order another for the 2nd Tivo.
