Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance SPOILERS 2/9

Just started this, but found something that I think is very interesting.
When Steve is talking to the camera about his dump that he told the brother he took, they bleeped him out.
But if you look at his lips, he's clearly saying 'crap'. Why bleep that out? I'm pretty sure Fox censors wouldn't stop 'crap'.
So the thought hit me, did they bleep it out to make the show appear more 'on the edge'? To up the Osborne Factor?
I found that very odd.

This show keeps getting better and better. I loved how Steve did a great job meeting her parents for the first time because it was her love for him that got him through the day. That was hilarious. Then the next day when Steve showed his "true" side by acting like an idiot in front of her family and Randi didn't even know it. I must have missed it but how did they keep Randi from playing crochet with the rest of the group?
"You know, we um, yeah, uh, haven't done anything yet."
"I think I know what you're leading on to, Steve."
:D

Ok, this is becoming something of a guilty pleasure. Watching his family mess with the rich yuppies was too funny.

Totally. Worse (or better?) than Average Joe!!! :p

I'm primarily watching this show because of my constant comparisons to a certain other "fake out reality show", which shares one staffer with MBFOF (listed on the this show as "consulting producer", Danny Salles).
But it's tough to take the "cringe factor" that is pretty much the heart of the whole thing here. I don't do "cringe" well!
I'm also not convinced Steve has any more concern about this than "messing with their heads". This entire family is going nuts, and may make major life decisions based on this, and he's still yukking it up (as an actor, off camera).
In the other show (Spike TV's "Joe Schmo"), only ONE person was affected by the "joke"...the person dubbed by the title, Matt Kennedy Gould. His family was far off in Pittsburgh. And my general thought there was along the lines of this...Matt signed up for a reality show. He pretty much signed up for "whatever happened".
Randi's parents, siblings, etc., did not sign up for this show, and they're getting dragged into this. I put her on the same level as Matt as far as SHE "signed up for it", but she's risking permanent emotional damage to the family for her payday...
Oh, well, I will continue to watch just to see how it got pulled off. I do think it's interesting that they "dialed back" Steve Williams tonight in the first encounter with the Coy family, reasoning that it would just drive 'em out into the streets if they got the full "Steve treatment" from moment one...

This is just a very smart and hilarious show. Almost up to par with Joe Shmo. Best line of the night:
"I like Dodgeball" - Steve's Dad to Randi's Dad
Posted by: jeff125va
I think we got a pretty good twist last night that we weren't really exposed to from any of the prior previews. He acted so normal the first time he met the family, and then Randi wasn't around for most of the time that he was back to his old self.
I think there are FCC rules prohibiting references to excretory functions, not necessarily limited to specific words. Since he was clearly using it in that context (as opposed to "oh crap!!") I guess they could have a problem with that. Maybe "dump" is ok though, even in the same context, since that's not its primary meaning. I'm just sorta guessing there, but I think it makes sense.
I sorta wonder how I'd react if someone in my family put me through something like this for $250,000. She didn't know how obnoxious Steve was going to be, and by the time she did it was only for a few more days. I wonder how they'd react if she told them now - would they wish she hadn't so they could have gotten the money?
I could have sworn that there had been previews in the earlier teasers for this show, where Steve was saying to the dad, something like, "I haven't slept with your daughter yet, but I can't wait to." Is that just me? I was assuming that the conversation about that last night was going to be where he said that, but it wasn't nearly as crude.

That was a great line, either the brother laughs and bonds with the guy... or he is disgusted and offended as intended. This actually reminds me of a wedding I went to, where everyone 'in the wedding' played a round of golf together and a member of the brides family said something to me that shocked me and made me laugh.
Warning crude language:
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
upon exiting a bathroom he asked: Have you ever shat so hard your nuts hurt?
Of Steve's family, the death obsessed sister is probably my favorite. Whenever she senses anyone is the least bit comfortable, she say somethiing like: "You know we could all be dead tomorrow... do you realize that?"
Posted by: Bryanmc
Here are my predictions as to what will happen at the "wedding".
I'm basing this one the assumption that Randi believes she has to get through the "I do"s to win the money.
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
I think Steve is going to break down in the middle of the wedding and say he can't go on any more. He can't lie to Randi's family, that it's all a sham. Maybe he does it under the guise that he's really falling in love with her, but I think she will get right to the edge of victory and then he will totally pull the house of cards down.
Now, Randi thinks that if she wins they get $1Million, $500K to her and $500K to Steve, right?
What does she get at the end of this? $250K?
I guess she'll be glad to get anything, but it sure would be a bummer to have your expected winnings cut in half like that.
Posted by: DancnDude
She was told she gets $250K and her family gets $250K and that Steve has the same deal.

So is that what she gets for real?
Funny that the actors will get paid so much less than the non-actors on a show.

That's the story so far, but I'm guessing that she will even get more. I don't know that they can officially offer a prize (Steve's money) and not actually give it to a real contestant, so I bet she also gets "his money" for a total of $1,000,000.
Posted by: YCantAngieRead
By the way, I can sort of read lips, and I think they actually bleeped him saying "dump". Which makes me hate to even admit I was paying that much attention. :D
I'm going to continue to watch this show, just because, frankly, there isn't much else on during that hour. But I'm really not enjoying it much...I disagree with whomever said this is almost as good as Joe Schmo. It's not, from my perspective-I don't care for Randi, and I immediately liked Matt. I don't care for the actors, either.
And I really don't like the fact that Randi brought her family into this...since they never signed on for a realilty show experience.

I had the TV playing in the background last night and noticed something familiar about a guy on a Hungry Man dinner commercial, it was Steve! It would be hilarious if the family happened to watch TV and caught their future son-in-law on a commercial.
Posted by: sieglinde
OK, answer me this. Why would the Coy family permit cameras in their house when they were getting Randi's phone call and when they were getting ready for their flight? I can see someone saying that the couple being able to stay in the mansion was part of the show but this other stuff?
I would much rather live with Steve's family than the Coys, BTW.

Because Randi has something to tell them and the show wants to capture their response. They follow them getting ready for the flight, because by this point they have basically agreed to be on the "show" as the show has now been extended to cover the new romance between Randi and Steve. What's so hard to buy about that?

From what I understand about the show, I'm guessing the Coy family was aware of her participation on "a reality show", and were somehow told they'd need to be videotaped as part of her participation on it.
What I don't know...is what story they used to get that permission. It seemed a little easy to me that they were videotaped...considering that the family seems to be a little...well...

He's actually been in quite a few (albeit small) roles: most recently in an episode of "Will and Grace" from March 2003, three episodes of Buffy, (playing a "Cave Demon," so probably in heavy makeup), other guest appearances in Angel, Becker, Nash Bridges, and a few others...

Ah! I forgot one of the best parts of last night's show.
When they asked Steve what he did, he said he works for a company that supports the pop-up ads on the internet.
That was awesome.
Now, I missed the first episode so it may have been covered there. But I was rolling.

uppity?
I'm wondering too. I would think by the time the wedding announcement came around, somebody would start to have some serious suspicions as to the nature of the show. Unless, of course, they are completely clueless rich folk, which is a distinct possibility.

And since it Randi was already along for the ride, and they'd already taped some of the show...what would have happened if the family said "no way" when asked to be taped? Or worse, if they'd totally refused to fly out to L.A. and/or participate in the activities there? They must have tried to figure out beforehand that the family would be OK with it. Maybe they did so as part of the original "she's on a reality show" concept...

He is AWESOME in this show!

I predict that he will get his own sitcom from this.
And it will fail miserably.
Not that I don't like him, I think he's awesome. Just going with my gut.

From what I saw on the episode where they were in their home in Denver, they live in QUITE a nice neighborhood there-can't remember which one it was specifically but I remember thinking about that when they showed it.

This show beats Joe Shmoe's ***...hardcore.
I don't think I've laughed out loud so much at a TV show...ever.
The only thing that stinks is that I can't skip the commercials because I can't wait until its recorded to watch it.

That was a good one, and everyone has a buddy that has woken up drunk and peed in a closet

Eh, I beg to differ, but that's my right, I s'pose. I haven't laughed at anything in this show yet, and as I've said before there's something about the pacing of it that makes me wicked bored. But, like I said, that's just me. It'd take something pretty spectacular to beat JS in my book.

I can't contain myself watching this show.
This last one I was laying in bed and my 2 yr. old was sleeping next to me. I kept having to put the pillow over my face because I was laughing so much I was afraid I'd wake him up.
I haven't laughed out loud at television like this in a long time.

Of course you're entitled. :) IMO this show sticks its head above Joe Shmoe because it doesn't need to resort to gratuitous T&A. With a daughter on the way (4 weeks to go WOOOO!) I'm becoming increasingly disturbed by the importance of appearance and sex that is being placed on society by the media. Its refreshing to watch a reality show that has very little, if nothing at all, to do with sex.
That, and the fact that Steve is freakin' hilarious.

Ditto, except my son is laughing with me. Pretty sure he doesn't know why he's laughing, but he's laughing!

Speaking as someone who still does prefer TJSS to MBFOF, and I've watched most of the latter, now...
I'm one that agrees with you on the presence of "gratuitous T&A" in TJSS. We discussed the point ad nauseum in the other thread, when the show was running. The general thought was that it apparently was thought to be necessary because of the show's presence on Spike TV, which caters to young guys...and that the show held up quite well without those elements.
MBFOF is on a major over-air network. Even if it is pushing-the-envelope-Fox, it's still going to be muted compared to a cable channel aiming solely at young men hoping to get noticed.
A number of women who were fans of TJSS when it was running...basically said that they looked past most of the pandering to young males as a "boys will be boys" thing.
Stripping away the concerns over "gratuitous sex" (er, maybe that isn't the right phrase), I still think TJSS is better than MBFOF on many levels.
Heck, for that matter, MBFOF apes TJSS in many ways, including production style! Anyone who watched and enjoyed TJSS is doing double takes in each MBFOF episode. The shots and style are almost identical. Heck, in MBFOF #1, Steve's character discovered a bidet in one of the mansion's bedrooms and didn't know what it was! TJSS regular viewers recognize that...Matt had the same experience, only Matt's was real. ;)
It's almost as if Danny Salles (TJSS director and listed as a "consulting producer" for MBFOF) tossed the MBFOF people a videotape of TJSS and said "here, check this out".
And I think Matt, as the "dupe" in TJSS, was much more real and much more of a sympathetic character than Randi.
But, I, too wished that the gratuitous T&A weren't necessary...and that's speaking as a single male. LOL
After all this, yes, I am still watching MBFOF...trying to watch it without the comparisons in my head. I'm curious to see how they "pull it off".

Oh okay. Yeah. If that's something that's important in your household, I can understand why you like this show better. I had forgotten that some people had problems with that aspect of the show.
And what Inundated said. Word for word. :) I've been trying to like Randi, but I just don't, and that's the difference between the two shows, for me.

We're (Angie and I) coming off of a rather unique show, where the "butt of the joke" turned out to be the most likeable person on it. So...that's what's in our minds when we try to cope with Randi. It's probably too high of a standard to expect to happen again.
Heck, there are times I almost WISH Randi's world would come flaming down, though she doesn't seem as much of a b-i-you-know-what as she did in the first one or two MBFOF shows...
And the family members...their involvement (lured in, but not signed up) still kinda bothers me. I mean, people do REALLY BAD THINGS based on screwed up weddings, in real life...what if the quiet brother goes off his rocker and seriously hurts Steve "Williams"? OK, it probably didn't happen, since we'd probably have heard it by now and Fox probably would have to cancel the show if it did happen...but that's a risk I'm not all that comfortable with watching.
It's tough for me to "dial back" and just watch a gag show, I guess. ;)

Am I the only one who thinks there is a possibility that EVERYONE EXCEPT Randi is in on the whole thing, including her family? I know there are some clueless people on the planet, but I find it hard to believe that noone in her family is the least bit suspicious of this whole thing. I also find a little suspicious the reactions of Randi's siblings- her sister is so upset over this you would think SHE is having to get married to a slob!
This show would be elevated to classic status if everyone was in on the gag except Randi..........
Just a thought.......

As I said before, I don't think Randi's family have the acting skills required to fool her.
Posted by: MonsterJoe
I didn't at first...but I think Randi is cool...very genuine person. Not sure how she's going to take everything, but I have a feeling it will be graceful.
As far as the family being in on it...that would be complete genious (the way it *should* have been with Joe Shmoe) but I doubt it...It would be really hard to act as bound up as these people seem to be, and their irritation at the whole situation seems very unfiltered.
One thing that bothers me is the fact that Steve's family are really bad actors...I can't understand how they're convincing anybody.

But, kinda like what Matt from Joe Smo said, your so caught up in the moment and you got to realize that they aren't thinking that this is fake, however, we know, so it's obvious to us.

I don't know. I get the idea that the only time Steve was "acting" was when he was kissing ass. Everything else was just his natural self. :)

Absolutely agreed, and much better put than I would have.

I think this is a great show. Steve does over do it a little bit, and his laugh is annoying.
I don't see how she can lose though. If she just goes to her family and says, "listen, this is not about you, it is about me. I love him, I want to marry him, I hope in time you will see in him what I do. This makes me happy, so if you want ME to be happy you will support me."
