tivo drive going bad?

I heard my tivo drive squeak the other night and I've heard it 4 more times since then. I'm pretty sure thats a sign of a drive going out. I went and bought a new 80G western digital drive to copy my data to so I dont lose anything. but when I took my tivo apart it had a 82.3g drive. and the dd copy says the drive needs to be the same size. Is this close enough or am I gonna have problems?

If the target drive is smaller than the source drive, you are going to have problems...

well I tried the dd copy and it looked like it was copying because my hd light was lit. but I waited over 8 hours and it was still lit. and when its copying does the screen just have the blinking cursor under the command line? all I need to do is make a copy. I dont really need to upgrade to a larger size drive. can I use norton ghost?
