Bash Prompt - Series 2 - Other Questions

I have a few questions for anyone with the heart to help me out. I need to know how, and, if you can get the bash prompt on a series 2 rig? I have the serial cable, null modem, etc...etc.... --> would like to connect to it via serial, get bash, then enable telnet, etc....

I want to do these so I can hack it without opening the box.

I tried to install tivoweb (directly connecting to my pc) and enabling the bash promt thorugh there, now my IP address is all messed up (re-image i guess??).

Anyways, just curious, all of these hacks seem to be for the series one, but I am not sure. Do i need to buy a series one? Please, give some feedback and let me know.
