help choosing upgrade

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Just got a RCA DVR-40 the other day and quickly realized I need more space. Reading the upgrade sites however confused me as my unit has "120 Gb Drive" stamped on the front cover but the status screen states recording time is "variable up to 35 hours". The upgrade sites state that a replacement single 120Gb HD will give me over 100 hrs... Why the difference? Is RCA lying?
My software version is 3.1.1b and it is a DirecTivo unit....

Any help here choosing would be appreciated...

Just went a little proactive after my post, I looked inside the unit and it has a 40Gb drive, so much for truth in advertising!

35 Hours is certainly a 40Gb drive (in a DTiVo). Was it sold as an upgraded unit? Did you pay extra for it? AFAIK, no DTiVo has ever shipped with anything except a 40Gb drive (or 30+15 for some early units).

Series 2 DTiVoes need a bracket to hold a second drive, so the simplest upgrade is to replace the original A drive with a 120 or 160 (TiVo will see only 137Gb of that). You can very easily add a second big drive later if you wish.

Did not pay extra, it was part of DTV's upgrade special, still it says clear as day on the front panel "120Gb Drive" Single replacement is probably the way I'll go as that leaves the original drive as an emergency backup. Thanks for the reply!
