Mine came with the preformatted drive, torx wrench and instructions. Which one would you like to eliminate to save money?

Generally, drive kits come with everything you need to upgrade your TiVo, except for a Phillips-head screwdriver. Actual contents depend on which kit you order. For specifics, on our web site you'll find "more info" pages for each kit....these pages contain a list of all of the parts for that specific kit.

I'll just buy a kit from weaknees. Does adding a drive increase the chance of the drives failing? thanks

Adding a drive will always increase the chance; you are twice as likely to have a drive failure with two drives, than with one. The safe way to go is by replacing your existing drive (and keeping it as a backup, as well).
