is there anyone close enough to this product to say how reliable it is expected to be out of the gate? i am 'jonesing' for something like this, but after watching sony pull their HD/directv units and replace them repeatedly, i'm wondering if this is the finished product or the 'double blind' test to figure how to do one of these right. i'd rather pay $2000 for something i can keep a few years, than $1000 just to replace it next spring. thanks.

Well, it won't be released until april, and beta testers are under a strict confidentiality agreement, so I seriously doubt you'll hear anything before June on relability.

As with all products, the first release is also a "double blind" test.
There are going to be problems, just because even with the best test plan you can not come up with every test scenerio.

It is just not practical nor possible. And given that this is going to include OTA HD signals, that is even more intresting. So unless they are testing the unit on every block in the US, you are going to have some problems with different HD transmissions and signal strengths.

If you are waiting for the pefrect solution that will never give you a problem... You will be waiting a long time, as there still isn't a unit out there that works 100% of the time for 100% of the people.

I would think Hughes, Tivo, DirectTV will do everything in their power to make sure this unit is of high quality as it will probably become the defacot "standard" for HD-PVRs for a while.

(sorry, couldn't resist!)

Is there any confirmation or denial that 8psk will be supported in this unit?

Since D* doesn't use the 8psk encoding/compression scehme I dougt the HD TiVo box will have it

Since DirecTV may use it, it would be smart to have a product with the future built in vs obsolence. Does the unit have a Broadcomm 4500 or later chip, then a quick software update would enable it.

Why would a design that was done more than a year ago be based on a remote possiblity that one scheme would be used? I doubt Tivo has that much room to wiggle (they've been losing money).

I'm actually not interested in the philosophy. Dish built it in 2 years ago. Obsolesence is a bad thing.

It's a simple question of which chip the HD Tivo uses. It likely is compatible. I'm looking for an answer vs a business school case discussion.

Well, the question is simple, but you should probably ask TivoPony since I am not sure that the answer can be revealed as easily. Or wait till the box actually ships and someone opens it up.

I agree that obsolesence is a bad thing, but depending on how long it takes, it might not be that bad. And, we'll always have eBay... :)

I will open my HDVR-250 day one as soon as it's out of the box. Security sticker or no sticker. If I pay $900 for something, I damn well have the right to look inside. I will post pics and other findings here.

My wife does hate this habit of mine though!

the first 3 plain d* receivers i had only supported 3 digit channels. But for a while now everything supports 4 digits even though it seems unlikely anytime soon that they will figure out a way to need that many. So if the cost is tiny or non existant i'm sure they will start putting 8psk in eventually (if they havent already). Hec I would imagaine sooner or later they start putting mpeg4 or something else in too once cheap chip
