I wouldn't classify myself as a fan, but I did get an email from a coworker.

Are there really people out there that believe these "gag contestants" are more than just schtick? I thought everyone realized that the *really* bad ones were phoneys. I guess I was wrong.

Yup, you're right.

I don't think the world is making fun of him. He knows he's funny. He knows he sucks at singing and dancing. The people in this room can't get enough of him.

I don't understand how anyone could NOT think that the really bad ones aren't phoneys. It's obvious that all the contestants are screened before going on the show, so the producers already know who's good and who's bad.
The judges must be in on it, too. Otherwise, they would have complained to the producers that these phoneys are wasting their time.
In fact, I think the phoneys know it, too. They're being paid to embarass themselves specifically for entertainment, and they're probably laughing all the way to the bank.

You are right about all of this, except probably the last bit about them getting paid.. I think they just get their few minutes on national TV.
Doesn't matter.. It's still good entertainment, in my book. :)

I do not dispute that the judges and producers know that this guy is not a "real" contestant. I hope that he does not think that people are watching him because he is good. This is like watching a car crash. I may be wrong but I think that he was being sincere and genuine, he could be a hell of an actor. He looks a bit like Corky from Life Goes On.
He does have a great and positive attitude, I just am a little uncomfortable with all this.

I guess he's getting his 15 minutes of fame. He gave us all a good laugh and has a great attitude about it....

I'm positive that the judges and the producers know when they send in someone that sucks. I'm even positive that most of the people that suck know that they suck and do it for the two minutes in the spotlight. There might even be a couple that think that they really have a chance, but there can't be very many.

How can you not like somebody who has given us so much laughter? I just watched his live performance at UC Berkeley. Thanks for the link, Old7! As far as the producers knowing when somebody sucks, a lady called a syndicated radio show and said her friend was so bad, the producers said that if he would sing as badly as he did for them on camera, they'd guarantee him a spot on the show. It's second or third hand info, but I have no problem believing it. Who cares anyway? It makes for entertaining TV and isn't that why we watch, anyway?

What about what's his name from last season...
Like a Virgin....
now there's a guy that will need some therapy since he looked like he really thought he could sing. At least Hung had a clue...

I'm so there!
Posted by: Kablemodem
He sings better than I ever could.
Posted by: ccouger
The SF Chron just had an article about him. He's a local Berkeley student:

You must be thinking of this guy.
I'd never seen the show, but I set up a season pass after watching this! :)

He was pretty funny.
But, do you really think the judges know which contestants suck beforehand? The producers and judges have two different jobs. The producers responsibility is to make a good show, so that's why they let all the train wrecks through. It's entertainment watching these people make noise, and it's entertainment watching the response of the judges. The judges are there of course to find the next AI. So, I think it would be counterproductive for the judges to know who the good and bad singers are beforehand.

Not which ones, but they have to know that they are going to see some people that truly suck, and were sent there for entertainment value... Yes, the judges are there in the early stages to help pick the next "American Idol", but they are also part of an entertainment show.

The radio station here hasn't quit yet playing clips of him singing...

Have you heard Chris Burke sing? I used to listen to Don & Mike on the way home and they would play snippets from time to time. William Hung is much much better.

They do pre-screen the applicants. Good people who the producers might think can make it are let through. Middle of the road people are told to go home. People who are so bad it's funny are let through for the comedic element, so that Simon can rip on them. It's part of the show, and part of the reason why people watch.
William Hung is great. He is an engineering student at Berkley. He went, had some fun, and now is enjoying his 15 minutes of fame. Good for him.

On this same line, did anyone catch Jimmy Fallon doing William Hung on SNL last week?? He was DEAD ON! Funny stuff!

Doh. I was going to mention the Jimmy Fallon parody. It was very funny.

The Fallon parody is on the williamhung.com website if you did miss it.

Jimmy Fallon doing William Hung on SNL: unexpectedly funny.
Ryan Seacrest trying to do William Hung a few days later: comedy death.

Soemtimes I wonder if these guys really know if they're that bad. It's kind of like after a date the dorks from Average Joe 2 starting to think they really have a chance with the Beautiful girl.

To me, Ryan Seacrest DEFINES comedy death.

I wonder if there's a scat girl site too. She's a close second to William for me this season.
