American Idol Results Show - 2/11 (Spoilers)
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: drew2k
OK, Fantasia and Diana made it, just like everyone thought. Simon Cowell was on Ryan Seacrest's show Tuesday and picked these two to go all the way. It's fixed I tell you! (Just kidding.)
Does anyone think Matthew or Katie will be called back as a wild-card? I think Paula really likes Matthew.
Anyway, first results show, and I'm already sick of the "You'll find out ... right after these messages ..."

Yet another show made better by TiVo. I don't know how the unwashed masses can stand it! :)

I hope that Katie gets call backed as a wild card. I can't believe that she didn't finish in the top three but I suppose Matthew got a big portion of the female vote.

Well, I didn't vote--but if I had, *I* would have voted for him. :)

Bring back Katie!! (nice top! :) )
Seriously, I think her sexy image hurts her a bit right now, especially against an attractive guy in the same group.. I don't know the exact demos of the show, but I suspect a lot of the voting is done by females and they'll vote for the hunk before they vote for the hottie.
Personally, I enjoyed Katie's performance a little more than Diana's, and a lot more than Matthew's. For me to pick a top three from last night, it would be Fantasia, Katie, and Diana, in that order.

Another two thumbs up for TiVo -- nice to get through that 30 minute show in 8 minutes.
Now with all this new-found time...

The American Idol results show is FAR more satisfying when played back via Tivo....
I definitely though it should have been Katie sitting up there instead of Matthew. I applaud her song selection...in fact, it was the choice of material that actually made her performance appealing to me. Simon was absolutely correct when he said that the contestants were playing it "too safe"...."Open Arms", "Wind Beneath My Wings", "Imagine"???? UGhhh...Total adult-contemporary schlock.

I must be the only one that just  at Fantasia. First off, she can't ennunciate, second, I don't think her voice is that good. It might be because she can't speak correctly, but hey... to each their own I guess. Katie should have gone through instead of Fantasia. Yuk...

I'm disappointed in America at the moment. I was counting on the voters to send Katie through. I mean, with those legs and the rest of that body, how could they not?
:)

Maybe Katie should have worn that TOP during her performance. :D
That might have prompted the non-teen-girl demographic to get off their butts to call in a vote for Katie to keep her coming back :)

This is my first AI with Tivo. Could not believe how much of my time they were wasting before. Long live Tivo! BTW, this group of contestants was much better than anything the past shows had to offer at this stage. It should be a great season.

My wife said the reason Katie didn't make it was because of her appearance - she said that no woman would have called and voted for her and that was the same reason Matthew made it to the top 3. She just about fell out of her chair when she saw Katie's top last night.
I had to play the good husband and say "Oh ya, that's just too much." ;)

I called and voted for her. :) I also voted for Matthew because he was cute, not because I thought he could sing very well. ;)

Add me to the Fantasia doubters. I just don't get her, but then again I don't particularly like Macy Grey either and they kept comparing them like it was a good thing. ;) I expect that Katie will be back in the Wild Card show for a couple of reasons, but while Matt was cute he wasn't cute enough to justify that weak performance.

I guess I should have posted this here instead of over in the other thread. Oops.
I was really disappointed Matthew was third place. Is this common in American Idol-good looking people tend to get higher than they should? His rendition of the song was awful-beyond the sped up part of it, he was off-pitch quite a few times. This'll be frustrating if good-looking singers place higher than they should.
Fantasia would be good if she could get some diction lessons and some coaching on pronouncing things. I liked her image better last night-it looked like she lost the piercing that had been buggin' me. But that little run at the end of her song nearly killed me. Ick.
And I think we'll see Erskine again at the wild-card show.
Oh, and also-anyone else immediately spot Fantasia's Mom in the room with the family? Lord. Now we know where she gets her strange look.

Yes. The primary callers must be 12 year old suburban girls. From the first season cute (white) boys have gone far further than they ever should have.

I think it's the nature of the show that good looking people get further than those who can sing. Simon has numerous times said they're looking for a pop star. How many pop stars have you seen in the past 10-15 years who weren't good looking/cute/attractive in some way? And the ones who are the best looking seem to be the biggest stars.
If you're looking for the next big star, you have to, as Simon says "look at the total package". There are quite a large number of people who will look at someone and turn the mute button on than turn the picture off and listen to the music.

Well, the show is about producing pop (as in popular) stars, not necessarily the next great musical talent of our era. So I guess I can't complain if I feel that looks are taken into consideration too much.
I do think that the judges shouldn't focus on "look" at all in the early rounds. They should choose the people with the best raw talent, and then let the audience go for looks if they feel like it.

Well....my wife and I basically both said at the same time when we saw Katie....."Gee, she looks like a candidate for a wardrobe malfunction".

Anyone else think that Fantasia sounds like Erkle? (Never watched the show Erkle is/was on, but I've seen/heard the character before).

I would say that when there are two equally talented (or untalented) people, the answer is probably yes. But last year showed that vocal talent really did win out. The top three - Ruben, Clay, and what's-her-name (sad that I forget after only a few months) were clearly three of the less-attractive-looking people. (Though Clay has been "made over" since then).
But I agree with you - Matthew's performance was one of the worse I can remember in the final 32. Off-key, sped up(potentially not his fault), doofy smile during a serious song. Just didn't sit well with me.
Thankfully, third place in AI is like fourth place in the Olympics...

I didn't notice it to be off key - at least, no worse than the other contestants. I thought that Marque showed more pitch problems than Matthew did, honestly. The speeding up of the song was indeed a problem, though I can't say exactly who's problem it was - it could've been a producer that did it to fit the song into a certain time slot, or it could've been his choice. Not sure.
As for the "serious"ness of the song - how serious can a song be that features the lyrics "There's a pretty little thing, waiting for the King, down in the Jungle Room"?

Did anyone notice they actually showed us the voting percentage Fantasia got? I can't remember that they did that last season.
I wanted Erskine to go through, but the two that made it are better than him, I think. Really tough competition this year, at least in this first group.

I am almost 100% sure they wouldn't intentionally speed up a song to fit a show-since it's live, they'd have to know ahead of time what they were doing, which means he had X months to practice on this sped up version. Hence the reason I was not at all impressed.
Anyone else hear the rumor that a bunch of Fantasia votes, like 8000 of them, went to some woman's voice mail? So it appears she actually got more votes than it seems. Which I don't understand, but maybe it's not for me to understand.

All this makes me wonder how Frenchie would have done last year, especially considering that Ruben won.

If Katie doesn't come back as a wild card, I at least hope she'll continue to work at a career as a performer. In my opinion, she was the best *performer* of the lot; she has it all. But I also have to agree that there was a lot of good talent to choose from. (I was stunned to realize that 6 had to be eliminated. I could have easily wiped out 2, but 6?)
This may not be the place to mention it -- maybe it's come up elsewhere -- but the one thing that kills me about AI is that so many of the wanna-bes seem to think that this show is their *only* avenue for realizing their "dream" of being performers. I wish more of them were actually able to demonstrate that they were working on their careers -- performing locally, going to auditions, taking lessons, whatever -- before Idol came to town. (That's one reason I also enjoy Nashville Star. Those folks seem truly serious about making it in the music business -- and they have to have songwriting skills as well.)

I was kinda bummed that Katie didn't get in, but my top three were:
Ignoring Katie's astounding body:
Diana
Fantasia
Katie
Eyes open, Katie tops the list (and I even told my wife that--she slapped me. :))
Fantasia has an interesting style. I usually don't get into that "style" of music, but my wife does, and having listened to enough I can tell you that Fantasia ranks up with the best that I've heard. To top it off, she really has stage presense--she really got the crowd into it, and she played the cameras well.
She needs to do something about the look, though--she's a decent looking girl, but her face appears to be 95% mouth.

Hourray for TiVo! My wife and I end up watching the results show in about 7 minutes (if that). We don't care about anything but the results.
