The Daily Show - Getting Lame?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Is it just me, or have others noticed that "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" is getting tedious?
It just seems that their political satire (which, up until recently, were funny and entertaining) are becoming tedious and repetitive, and less 'equal' in target. Stewart's jokes are getting predictable and tiring: Bush is an idiot, Bush is a liar, we went to war in Iraq for no reason, we still haven't found WMDs, blah, blah, blah. The 'reporters' are always on the same 'cases' over and over again. "Race From the White House" for the Democrats is no longer being used, replaced by "Indecision 2004." Whereas both sides used to get hammered equally, it seems that the focus has moved decisively.
To cap it all off, I found him to be terribly rude to Bob Dole last week. Regardless of what you think of Dole, I found it to be way out of line and not funny. Plus, I thought his comments to the West Point cadets today in regards to their attendance "counting" to also be rude.
I've been a faithful viewer for a long while, TiVoing the show each night and watching it with my morning coffee, but lately I've found myself skipping through a lot of the segments. I admit to a libertarian bent, and I agree that we've got some political issues to deal with in this country, and there's no one more entertained by satirical shots at current events, leaders, and topics. But, I'm finding myself less entertained and more annoyed by the show.
Is it just me or do other viewers find themselves fast-forwarding through skits and other segments? I'm thinking about dropping it from my daily routine until well after the November elections...

I've never watched it however tivo was on that channel when I turned it on one day and I saw Trump on the show. I thought he razzed Trump very well and trump did it back pretty good. However I could see how a more serious person would not find it amusing. But I would blame that person for not reviewing tapes of a show/host before submitting to its torture. It's obvoiusly not supposed to be meet the press.

Yeah, it does get a little repetitive, I guess. But the "KHAN!" gag the other day was the funniest thing I've seen on TV in a while. I also get all my news from it. ;) I always FF through the boring stuff, like when he interviews actors I don't care about. So I guess I'll keep watching.

IMHO The Daily Show is funnier during political season than any other time! I don't watch EVERY show, though.
Having Richard Perle on was pretty surreal.

I read the Newsweek article a while back on Jon Stewart, and while he admits in his life he leans more to the left, he says they try to make fun of both sides equally. I think recently Bush has given them more material to make fun of, but they razz the Dem candidates pretty good. He also admits that their audience right now is Dems because "Republicans are winning."
The best part of the Daily Show, IMHO, is Lewis Black's "Back in Black" segments. I really miss seeing those "Even Steven" segments between Steve Carrell and Stephen Colbert. However, TDS is 10 times better now than when Craig Kilborn hosted it.

I had no problem with Jon Stewart's treatment of Bob Dole last week. I thought it was a good, entertaining, light hearted interview and that Mr. Dole had a lot of fun.

It seems by "lame" you mean "too liberal." You complain about last night's bashing of the right, but make no mention of his numerous jabs at the left, most notably Kerry's hypocrisy in his speech about Bush on the aircraft carrier.
Also, how was his Dole interview rude? Dole's been on the program multiple times, and I don't think he would keep coming back if he thought Stewart was giving him a hard time.
It sounds like you want a show that blasts the left while giving the right a free ride. If so, I suggest Dennis Miller, who has already pledged that he won't say anything bad about Bush.

There was a pretty funny segment the other night called "opinion / opinion that is different from that opinion." I thought that name was classic.
I lean way to the right, but I still like TDS. I know that he leans left and will take jabs at Bush, but it doesn't bother me. I just hope he continues to take jabs at the Dems as well. Election time give Jon Stewart his best fodder.

I stopped watching it due to bad guide data that was never addressed by DIRECTV / TiVo / Tribune / Comedy Central / The Daily Show / Jon Stewart (tho' kudos to the latter for mentioning it on-air once).

We, my wife & I, used to watch the show all the time back in 2000, but had for some reason stopped watching. A week ago, my wife asked me to start TiVoing it again, since we really like the pre-election stuff! We have really enjoyed getting back into it again!
We have discovered a couple of people through "The Daily Show" that we are big fans of now.
First of all, Lewis Black! His segments are so funny! We even bought front row tickets to one of his shows last year! He is hilarious!
Another person we like now due to seeing him on "The Daily Show" is Michael Moore. He was on the show talking about his book, "Stupid White Men". I had just been down-sized by a company that Halliburton had just taken over, when we saw Moore's interview, so it really struck a chord with me.
Some of the things some of you didn't like recently, were very funny to me. I enjoyed Bob Dole's interview, and thought Bob was pretty funny! I also thought the comments to the West Point guys were pretty funny. I am sure they weren't offended. I was in the military and I found it very funny!
My wife cracked up when I sang the cadence about eskimo pee, right before Jon did! We got all the "Officer & A Gentleman" references.
Of course, these are just my opinions. YMMV :D

I think it cycles back and forth with the mainstream press. The news has Bush on the defensive, so that's what TDS has to cover.

Dole has a great sense of humor (where the heck was it when he was running for President?); I've heard him on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me as well. I thought this particular interview was a bit dull, but certainly not offensive. Since he's been on before, they are more comfortable jabbing at each other without 'hurting'.

I watch just about every episode, and while it is pretty clear they have a left-leaning bias, he doesn't praise anybody on the left. He makes jokes about all the stupid stuff they do too.
And they use Bush so much, because gosh darnit, he gives them such good material. Their report on his Meet the Press interview was hilarious, and most of it was just shots of Bush "umming."
During the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries, he hit Dean just as hard as he's hitting Bush now. He's actually always hit Dean pretty hard, just because of the physical comedy of Dean's face...

Nope. Just you.

Maybe they just started making fun of things you don't want to see lampooned, perhaps.

Not "no reason", just not for the reasons we were told (ie, we didn't go to war due to WMD or terrorism).

We still haven't found WMDs. Which, had you been reading the news carefully before the war, you would not have expected us to find anyway, since they did not exist, or had been disposed of years before, as our intelligence indicated, intelligence which was carefully hidden from the general public, who don't read the news very thoroughly or very carefully.

Nope. Dems are made fun of too. It's just that Bush has made himself a much easier target. Blowhards who scare people with lies, start wars with lies, and then get caught out in their lies, make for better satire material.
It's the nature of the beast. The Dems are every bit as big a bunch of liars and hypocrites, so they'll get their share too, sooner or later. It's just that the Bush regime has had a bit of a "bad run" these past few months, which the Daily Show is taking advantage of, for the purposes of humor and satire.

I'll have to agree with previous responses and say that you are seeing things lampooned that you don't want to and as such are interpreting them as not funny and repetitive. I mean, you practically make a case for that being so when you say they stopped using "Race From the White House" for the Democratic race coverage. They used that EVERY DAY for months. Why wasn't it repetitive then? It's simple....personal politics.
The title "Race from the White House" is no longer appropriate nor applicable. A few months ago, it was unfathomable that a Dem stood a chance against Bush. We've seen a DRAMATIC shift since then. Kerry is anywhere from 5-11% ahead of Bush currently in random polls by CNN/Gallup, USA Today and others (accounting for error of +/- 3% at a result of 8%). They have gone back to the use of "Indecision" because that's what they've always used before and once again the tag is relevant.
Make no mistake about it....The Daily Show is as funny as it has ever been and has really never let go of that since Jon Stewart has been there. If you can't laugh at yourself and your own beliefs, oh well.

You guys are so silly; ROFLMAO! I'm a registered Democrat and have been so for years. It's apparently the responders that have the political bent; I was simply making comments about a television show becoming repetitive and tedious...
Despite that, thanks for the opinions. Obviously, it is just me... ;)

ROTFLMAO! I am a registered Republican so your assertion that I (assuming I am one of "the responders") have a political bent is rather incorrect. I have no political beef with the show nor with your post at all; It's just a logical one.
I still don't get it. You say your problem with the show is that it is becoming repetitive. The show has ALWAYS been repetitive. Political affiliations aside, you did single out the treatment of Bush. They have ALWAYS focused on him. The only difference I can see is the title of the Democratic race segment.
The show has ALWAYS leaned a bit to the left. It doesn't hide this. It skewers both sides.
They are just keeping up with the rest of the media.
Lastly, you are most certainly welcome for my opinion. I doubt the tone of the show will significantly change once November passes.
I hate the Yankees (I had to say that; it's consuming me more than ever today.)

I enjoyed the Dole interview. If anything Dole is, unfortunately, getting too old to be doing interviews.

I'm over a month behind on my recorded episodes of this show.
(Are you expecting a comment about spoilers here?)

See, who says the left and right can't agree on anything. Here's to hating the Yankees.
