Is the ,#401 trick broken for Series 1 Tivos?

I've been getting my listings over the Internet for almost a year now, but noticed that since 2/7/04, the attempts to make the daily call result in a "Failed" message because "Service Unavailable."

I have a Series 1 Tivo, and no media option obviously, but the ,#401 trick in the dialing prefix has been working just fine for me -- until now. Has something changed? I tried unplugging the unit and letting it cool down, then restarting it in case there is something wrong with the Tivonet card. No success. It just seems to have stopped working.

Anyone else have this problem? Even if yours is working fine, I'd like to hear from another Series 1 user so I can determine if it's my own hardware or something on the Tivo end.

It gets as far as "connecting" but no further. Help if you know the answer!

Must be a problem on your end. I've been using it for a little more than two years on my Series 1 and it's never missed once.

By the way, why is this in the Home Media Option forum?

What would the best forum area be? I was just thinking networking.

Since the Home Media Option isn't even available on Series 1 units the appropriate place would be TiVo Help Center. HMO and TurboNet card are two entirely different things.

What is the "#401 trick"?

I had this same problem. I fixed it by deleting the DHCP setting for my computer from my router, shutting down my computer, and then resetting the Tivo.

Once I reset the Tivo, I went back into change phone settings. I set the dial prefix to ,#401 again and tried it and it worked fine.

I don't know if deleting my computer's DHCP setting was necessary. I do know that resetting the Tivo was. I also know that my router didn't even see the Tivo's MAC address on my network until I reset the Tivo.

What does setting the dial prefix to 401 do for you?

It allows you to get daily call data via the internet, rather than dialup.
