Tivo Email Beta Application

Hi All,
I've been working on an application to check your Outlook email inbox and convert the emails to both MP3's and JPG's which can be viewed on you Tivo. You can download this program from: http://home.comcast.net/~awjones76/TiVoice.zip . In order to run this, you will need to have the following redistributables installed on your machine.
1) Microsoft Speech redistibutable
- http://www.microsoft.com/speech/download/sdk51/
2) Microsoft .NET Framework redistributable
- http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en
When you run this program for the first time, you will have to enter in your Music and Photo shortcut directories. This should be something like: "C:\Documents and Settings\Andrew Jones\Local Settings\Application Data\TiVo Desktop\Music". Next, you will need to enter the output folders to store your MP3 and JPG emails.
Hopefully the program will work for you. I have only tested it with Windows XP and Outlook 2003, so I am curious to see how well this works for everyone.
If all works correctly, you should be able to vew your "NEW" emails by going to the "Music and Photos" option on the Tivo.
Please post your results with this program here. I'd also like to know if anybody has any luck getting this to work with the JavaHMO since I have never tried this.
Thanks!
Andrew Jones

For me it appeared to install fine and I edited the options, but I don't see any photos of any emails. I made sure Outlook was the default for email, rebooted, but still nothing.

Did you have any unread emails in your inbox? The program is only supposed to display new emails. If you had unread mails in your inbox, can you check to see if any JPG's / MP3's were created in the output directories you specified?

The inbox was empty. I checked the email, and run TiVoice and it worked.
So TiVoice doesn't actually check the email for you, it just displays what's unread in the inbox? And if the inbox is empty of unread emails nothing happens? If so, maybe you can have it generate a "no unread emails" jpg.
Well, I'm off to see what they look like on the TiVo...

Great!! I'm glad it worked for you! Yeah, it only creates MP3's and JPG's for unread emails. Maybe I could add a feature that shows all emails....That could end up taking alot of hard drive space!

I just setup and used it on JavaHMO, picture worked fine, have not tried voice yet, but I have 2 questions.
1) When does the "picture" delete? I deleted the new mail from my inbox, but the picture remains.
2) Can it be set to display other folders then just the inbox? I have many rules that move mail to other folders. Perhaps in v2.0 ;-)
THANKS....COOL!

Don't "think" JavaHMO can directly play a mp3. I "think" it must be in a mu3 playlist....but I could be wrong.

Rollout,
With this version, you will have to manually delete the JPG's and MP3's from the output directory you specified. I'll add the delete functionality in the next version :) I'll look into displaying emails in other Outlook folders...I'm thinking that I might also write a version that works with POP3 accounts instead of just Outlook.
I'm glad you like it!!

The program works great. Thanks!
Is there a way to have only one email account "forward" emails to the TiVo?
Does anyone know of a way to do this within outlook so that it will work with TiVoice?

What exactly has to be installed from that page? I downloaded the Redist.: All files but there was nothing to run, just a bunch of .msm files.
I already have SAPI 5.0 installed as that comes with XP, is 5.1 really needed? If so how do I install 5.1 without installing the SDK?

Morac,
I think you may be okay with SAPI 5.0...I wish I had an environment that I could test with. Could you give it a try and let me know if this runs with 5.0? Thanks!!

jagec82,
With this version of TiVoice, there is no way to specify which email account messages are sent to the Tivo...Maybe in a future version though :)

Well it ran without any problems, but I didn't get a chance to test it with actual email. I'll try that later.

Andrew,
It never asked me to do this. I installed the executables, and installed your program. I "ran" it. It never asked me for the information above. I have an icon on my desktop that looks like a sheet of paper, but it does nothing when I click it.
Any thoughts on what I did wrong?
Thanks
Jim
PS: I have JavaHMO installed if that makes a difference.

jmace57,
Try double-clicking the icon in the system tray, or right-click on the icon and select open. This should bring up the configuration window. I promise to add better instructions with the next release :)
