This is the second time in a couple of months that I've been burned with renting a movie that was given great reviews and/or awards.
Firstly, it did look great, and sound great. That's where it ends.
Boy it sucked. It sucked a bowling ball through a garden hose. Really fast and hard. The first 20 friggin' minutes was all holier-than-thou speeches, with little or no character development. One particular part that comes to mind is that stupid scene where the troops are loading on to the train, and this guy is prattling on for almost 30 seconds (yes I timed it) telling the guys to get on the train. Over and over and over. Then a commander says "I do believe he's the best dressed man in the army". Again, 10+ seconds of "get your feet moving..... step up to the car and blah, blah, blah." This is typical of the movie. Then they get to the field, and the commander stands to the tree line and basically prays for 4 minutes. Almost 40 minutes before the first shot was fired.
What the heck does all this have to do with the story? Not a damn thing. betativoII fell asleep and I got pissed-off, and finally turned it off. Was this flic meant for bible-thumpers or cheesy period novel fans.
I'm gonna start getting a loan of DVDs off my friends rather than waste time and money again with this sorta crap. I mean, I rent 2 or 3 vids a month on average, and it seems that I'm batting 0.333 for movies.
Oh yeah, and that other movie that sucked: The Pianist. I won't even get started. Useless, dragged-out, half-as-good as Schindlers List, waste of polymer. The can of pickles was pretty ironic, though... I'm babbling. Sorry. Just had to get it off my chest!
Why is it so hard to find a good movie nowadays? And a lot of TV ain't that hot, either. Thank goodness for NHL Center Ice....

I hate to say I agree with you but I do.
Why do I hate to say it? Because I loved Gettysburg! I was thrilled when I found out they were making the prequel. Then I went and saw the film in the theater.
They butchered the book when they decided to focus almost entirely on Stonewall. He was a major character in the book but so was Lee, so was Chamberlain, so was Hancock. In this movie Hancock is barely even shown.
And yes, you are absolutely correct. The movie is so full of speeches that it is really hard to sit through. The speeches outweigh the dialogue. I won't even mention the historical inaccuracies.
It was my biggest disapointment of the year last year but mainly because I had such high high hopes.
Can't agree with you though on the Pianist. It was a long flick but I thought it was extremely good.

I did not hate it but it was nowhere near Gettysburg's quality I thought too much focus was on the southern point of view which differed radically from Gettysburg both sides were presented in that film. Also you did not have to rent it if you had cinemax it was showing in a late A.M. time slot last week.

I don't recall any awards going to this movie. Nor do I remember any critics enjoying it. In fact, Meta Critic has it at a 27. I've heard nothing but bad things about this movie. Were you really expecting it to be good?

I found it to be a big disappointment as well.
