Remote PC/Network Access

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a broadband connection, and access my TiVoWeb over SSL via orenosp. I also use this mechanism to access an IIS web server on my box to deliver a web site.

What I'd really like is to have complete access to all my machines at home. What is the best way of doing this?

I've looked at www.gotomypc.com but that is monthly or annual charge, there is also www.pcanywhere.com of course. Any other suggestions?

www.dyndns.org is free for basic use.

Also there are www.no-ip.com www.dtdns.com www.changeip.com and www.dynamic-nameserver.com

I think he's looking for remote control, not dynamic DNS.

We use PCAnywhere at work to connect to most of our customers servers and it does everything we want. Some of customers use Terminal Services instead which has the advantage of not "hijacking" the screen at the remote end but I guess for a home setup that isn't going to be much of an issue.

I use RealVNC

Silly me for not putting brain into gear before initiating keyboard output :o

:D Indeed

I use www.dyndns.com to get to my web links via orenosp.

Will look at realvnc...

Stuart, do you use it over orenosp somehow, or through some other mechanism?

I just temporarily open the port; I don't leave it up all the time.

Ahh.

I've done some more exploration, and it appears the way to make VNC secure is to run over SSH. I'm looking for a site with an idiots guide to getting VNC over SSH under windows as they are all Linux guides...

Even then, SSH runs over port 22, so you've still got a firewall problem - things are never easy!

The trouble is that I've found several free clients for SSH on Windows, but I can only find free servers for Unix. Anybody know better?

Thanks Stuart. Oddly enough, I found the OpenSSH site, but that doesn't mention a Windows version. Your link must be an offshoot. Now need to find out whether the subset of the SSH protocol that it supports will support RealVNC.

My company uses UltraVnc, it indirectly supports encryption (we don't use that though as we're only connecting over the private LAN).

From their FAQ:

"Does Ultr@VNC provides encryption of the communication ?

No. Not directly. Because we don't want to. But Ultr@VNC features the DSM Plugin System (Data Stream Modification) and some Strong Encryption DSM Plugins are already available (see the links page). DSM Plugins are really easy to configure and use."

It does file transfers and other bits and bobs as well as "normal" VNC control.

That's alright. I can write my own encryption module with UltraVNC. :)
