No 720p capability on my tv

I bought a Sony KV-32xbr450 HD-ready 4:3 tv thinking it would be good to go once I made the leap to HD. Turns out that this tv is not capable of receiving or displaying a 720p signal (it does receive 1080i and 480p). Since I believe ABC and ESPN use 720p and I plan to watch a lot of HD sports, will I need to buy another new tv??? Since the main reason I want HD is to watch sports, how much will not having 720p affect the image?

Will the new HDtivo upconvert any 720p signal to 1080i or will it lower it to 480p?? Also, I am considering the $99 HD package too, so will the Hughes or Samsung receiver that comes with that deal upconvert to 1080i or lower it to 480p.

Thanks for any advice. Love the forum (just joined recently)

My understanding is that the HDTiVo will have a cycle-format button on the remote that will let you switch between output formats quickly. If you tell the TiVo that your TV accepts 480p and 1080i only, it will toggle back and forth between the two formats.

Don't worry, your TV will work fine. I think most HD receivers let you specify the output format, so you would just set it to 1080i all the time.

I know it will upconvert everything to 1080i, that is how I have mine setup.

Virtually all current STBs will allow you to set the output to 480, 720, or 1080, and it will scale to that if necessary. My Sony will accept 720p, but it downscales it to 480p. So instead, I leave my Samsung STB to 1080i to avoid the down-rez.

Darin,

What Sony TV do you have that downscales 720p to 480p? What model is it?

Thanks.

My 32HS500 converts 720p to 1080i.

It's a KP-46WT510. I believe that's the case with the entire WS500/510 line, and probably some other lines too. But as I said, it's really moot, since you just let the STB do the conversion instead.
