Bad shows you liked
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

We have several threads like Favorite Show Currently in Production, Shows that Dies too Soon, etc, but how about...
Shows that you liked but no one else did? Shows that were canceled almost as soon as they got on the air, but you were the only fan?
For me... The Mullets. I though the 4 episodes they aired were pretty funny, but I guess I was the only one. :p

I hear its coming back, as the lead in to Enterprise ( that is moving to 9 pm) Now I am sure they are going to kill Enterprise

The Dukes of Hazzard stands out for me.

Sledge Hammer. Gotta love a show where the cop's gun talks to him.
Posted by: jones07
Cleopatra 2525 and ViP
Yes I love eye candy in my old age :p

I enjoyed Lottery on ABC and Otherworld on CBS sometime back in the 80's. I believe I am the only person who saw these shows, each ran for about one quarter of a season.
Posted by: harvscar
I enjoyed Fastlane and was sorry to see it go. In the same vein, I really liked Dick Wolf's show, Players.
Posted by: DougF
Gotta second "Fastlane". I don't know if nobody liked it, but it didn't get any kind of ratings. Of course, Friday night slot doesn't help.
Back around 1990 Tom Arnold had a show called "The Jackie Thomas Show". It co-starred Alison LaPlaca and Dennis Boutsikaris (hope I got that spelling right). The show was hilarious, but I think it only lasted a five or six episodes, that's all I saw. I used this exact same line in another thread a while back, but say what you want about Tom Arnold, the show was funny.
Update: just checked tvtome.com and found it there. The Jackie Thomas Show aired in late '92 and early '93 for 18 episodes.

I don't watch bad shows more than once.

Ned and Stacey, ran for two seasons on Fox back in 96ish. Thomas Haden Church, post-Wings. Debra Messing pre-W&G, Greg German pre-Ally McBeal. It's always been quite the guilty pleasure of mine, and I just recently made it through the entire run on the Women's Entertainment (!) network recently.
"Best of luck on future projects!"

I liked watching a show called "The Embassy". Unfortunately, it came out during 9/11. One of the episodes had to deal with an embassy bombing (right around the time our embassies kept getting bombed). I think it was too close for comfort. I wish they had aired the rest of the episodes. There was a nice story arc that didn't get completed.
Posted by: scooterboy
The Good Life. Starred John Camponera and Drew Carey in a supporting role before he got his own show. It was very funny and very well written. Unfortunately it had a lot of jokes that were too clever for the masses.
Posted by: jeff125va
I was also thinking Ned and Stacey. It was very funny, but I could tell it wasn't going to last.
Going way back with this one: It's Your Move with Jason Bateman. Only lasted 18 episodes during the 84-85 season. I LOVED that show when it was on, although I imagine it was pretty bad. I'm sure at any other age I probably wouldn't have been into it at all. Jason's character always had some sort of scheme going, I especially remember his fake "band," the Dregs of Humanity.
I loved The Agency, and definitely don't even consider it bad - but obviously someone did, so I'll mention that one.

I really liked Push, Nevada when it was on. Really kept you wondering what was going to happen next. Too bad it was cancelled.

Not even if you like them?
My guilty pleasure would be Space 1999 (if it ever got shown again). I also like the original Lost in Space. Those must be the two worst SF shows ever aired.
Posted by: ThePhantomsGirl
I loved a show called The Phoenix back in the late 80's starring Judson Scott. Was VERY upset when it was cancelled!
Smiles,
Holly

Although it is liked here, apparently Firefly did not do well enough in the ratings to last. I loved(!) that show and did not miss an episode.
I also loved Lost in Space.
Posted by: Blackwolf
I was one of the few people in the world that liked Kindred: The Embraced back when it was on in the mid 90's.
I also didn't find Crusade all that bad either, once I saw all the eps in their intended order.

I believe Firefly aired in the slot before my favorite "bad" show of recent memory, John Doe. I still wish they would have found a way to wrap everything up.

It depends on your defiition of a "bad show" . Critics probably panned a show like Gilligans Island, yet it is considered classic TV now and it lasted on the air a few seasons. On the other hand, there have been many critical successes that have been cancelled after only a few episodes (see all those Trio shows they had on a few months ago during "Brilliant But Cancelled"
That said, there was a show on during the era of Northern Exposure and Twin Peaks that took place at a overseas medical school. I know it stared Joanna Going as one of the students (I had a major league crush on her!!). I recall it getting good reviews but had poor ratings and got cancelled after a few episodes.

Was that vampire show with C. Thomas Howell? I loved that show!
I also got a kick out of Cop Rock when they reran a mini-marathon a couple of years ago! Very cheesy, but too funny!
The Agency & Dark Angel were two others I really liked, but didn't last long.
I really wanted to see "Touched By A Dark Angel"! :D

Wasn't the title actually "The American Embassy"?
I'd vote for that and Firefly. Although I don't know that I'd call them bad shows, just unpopular ones.

Tarzan
Thought it was pretty cool but near the end, I could see that it would be tough to keep the show going without repeating the same old storylines over and over.

I also remember Otherworld. In particular the episode where the brother and sister became rock stars by ripping off songs from the Beatles and David Bowie and pretending they were theirs.

"Parker Lewis Can't Lose", kind of a Ferris Bueller rip off. And now: Most Extreme Elimination.

Parker Lewis doesn't belong in this thread; it was a GREAT show!

Earth2 - Bad bad bad, but loved it!!!

I'm beginning to think everything I like is "bad" in everyone else's opinion. :p
Posted by: Bananfish
I loved a show called When Things Were Rotten that was on in the mid to late 1970s, but was cancelled after 6 episodes. It starred Dick Gautier and was a goofball comedy set in King Arthur time. I think Mel Brooks might have been the producer.
I was in my early teens when it aired and I liked lots of bad stuff, so I can't be sure whether the show was truly bad or merely overlooked, but I suspect the former, so I feel confident that I'm on topic!

I watched and enjoyed Girls Club on Fox for it's amazing 3 episode run......(ducking for cover) and probably in the Brilliant but Cancelled category, Boomtown, RHD, and of course Undeclared.

Another vote for Fastlane.
Posted by: justapixel
The Agency
An old one: Hot L Baltimore. :)
I liked Cop Rock too.
Posted by: JustAllie
When I was a kid, I loved the TV version of Planet of the Apes. It lasted about 14 episodes and I'm sure the general agreement was that it was bad. I was astounded when it came out on DVD (around the time of the new PotA movie with Mark Wahlberg). But I didn't hesitate to snap up that DVD set! I still love it!

Man, if we're going to count what we liked in our youth, I'm in real trouble. I liked some really crappy shows. Of course, back then, we only got two channels, so I didn't know any better....:
Misfits Of Science
Bonanza
Little House On The Prairie
The Liar's Club
...I could go on for days... :D

Brooks produced, but without Buck Henry (who co-produced Get Smart with him in the '60s).
It actually aired for 13 episodes, with some fairly impressive guest star and director credits.
Some of my favorite bad shows were stinkfests like "Holmes and Yo-Yo", "Quark", "V.R. 5", "Strange Luck", and "The Charmings" among others.
There's something about a really bad show done well that has a certain I-don't-know-what. (I can't spell "Je ne sais quoi")
Posted by: BlearyEyed
A show that I really liked but nobody else did was "Two Guys A Girl and a Pizza Place." I'm not sure if it was the dumb title or the show itself but it got trashed all the time and I really liked it. I especially was into the first half-season before it became "Two Guys and A Girl".
There are threads here about show's that died too young, this show was kind of an opposite for me. Everybody was trashing it and the ratings were mediocre. I'd faithfully tune in every week knowing that this episode could be the show's last, yet it somehow to the joy of me and (apparently) nobody else went on season after season. I apologize to all of you who had good shows taken while mine defied all logic and kept on going.

Fastlane gets my vote.
Posted by: coldtoes
I, too, was thinking about Push, Nevada.
And speaking of Joanna Going, what about the early-90s remake of Dark Shadows?
I also really liked It's, Like, You Know... (starring Chris Eigeman, post-Whit Stillman; Evan Handler, pre-Sex and the City; and Jennifer Grey, post-nose job, as her now-unrecognizable self.) I know no one liked that show, but we still laugh about Stories From The Bathroom.
(My Brilliant But Cancelled shows, including Firefly and everything by Judd Apatow, are too numerous to mention here. So I just stuck to the bad ones.)

My sister-in-law liked both this show and "It's Like, You Know" a LOT. I've never admired her for her great taste in TV, though. :p

Currently I'm watching "Pensecola: Wings of Gold" on TNT. I'll probably watch each episode once, then quit. CHiPs was another show I enjoyed despite the cheesiness. Battlestar Galactica is another. I'm sure there are dozens more that I just can't think of at the moment. :)

A couple comes to mind from my youth: "It's About Time", "Car 54 Where Are You?"

I liked that one too. It was definitely Mel Brooks or Buck Henry (who collaberated on Get Smart)

OMG, Hot L Baltimore!!! That was one of my fav shows of the 70s!! I had forgotten that one. The show was probably about 15 years ahead of it's time. Concetta Ferrel as the hooker was hysterical!!!

Some people think Boston Public is bad but I still like it. I think Enterprise is bad, but I still watch it. :p

I can't remember if I liked it as a 10 year old, but a show I know I used to watch in my childhood has now shown up on TV Land's "Kitschen" block (early weekend mornings).
"Shazam!"
Based on the comic book, of course, this live action show features Billy Batson and his "mentor" (an older man) traveling the country in a dorky-looking RV with a red sign with a yellow lightning bolt on the hood.
It's an educational show. So, when some poor kid is having problems making a simple life choice, like not running with bullies and joyriding in cars, Billy has the power to summon a lightning bolt from six mythical cartoon figures whose names spell the invocation "Shazam!". He then becomes Captain Marvel, an older superhero, and flies over some really bad looking stock footage to save the day.
It's kinda funny watching this show as an adult. For one, in the year 2004, Billy Batson sharing a life and an RV with an older single man would probably cause some concern ;) The music is the cheesiest music you've ever heard, and is tough to get out of my head! But I must have watched it a lot as a kid, because it all seemed very familiar.
Someone, make this go away!

Eisenhower & Lutz
Mostly because of a really, really cute DeLane Matthews and some of Patricia Richardson's early work.
Don't remember much about the show - except for them.

I consider myself to have good taste, but I've also been kown to like (I mean really like) a stinker or two.
First of all, for those who said they liked Kindred, BUY the DVD! I only got to see one or two episodes of this show when it ran, but got an itch to check it out a few years ago. I was scouring the newgroups for it and lo-and-behold, amazon had it on DVD. It was pretty cheap to ($12 I think). Its worth it to see the whole series short lived as it was.
Ok, here's my stinker list.
Surreal life (man I loved the first season)
Unhappily ever after
Herman's head (I can't believe this one didn't do better)
Hyperion Bay (please, no flame :)
Ok, and somebody help me here. What was the show that aired originally with the origial airings of "Ned and Stacey". It was about two architechts who along with one of their girlfriend/wife were all best friends? And has sort of an unspoken triangle thing going on? It was pretty much a comedy with some serious stuff spashed in kinda like Ned and Stacy. Anyone?
Posted by: SparkleMotion
Tony Shalhoub and Neil Patrick Harris in "Stark Raving Mad".
Posted by: Joyster
I really liked a show called "First Wave", I can't remember if it made it to a second season or not - I just remember being really disappointed that the story didn't get finished.
Posted by: spelcheker
TIME TUNNEL
I always wondered why they never came out the other end over the middle of the Pacific Ocean, or inside a mountain.
Posted by: tms317
LOVED Fastlane.
Was really getting into Skin
Parker Louis Can't Lose was a classic
Tribes....a cheesy teenage soap-type show that i was TOTALLY into in Junior High and was devastated when it was taken off the air before we were able to find out what happened when one of the girls was pregnant!!!!
Posted by: spelcheker
Oh yeah! I just remembered one but I can't pull out the name....
It had a rock band that discovered this medallion that they couldnt get rid of, and then they saw dead people. I think they had to help the ghosts right their wrongs or something. It was so derivitive but fun. Didn't last long though.
Anyone remember the name?
Posted by: JTAnderson
If "bad" means got bad ratings:
Joe Bash
The Famous Teddy Z
and, as previously mentioned, It's Like, You Know.
If "bad" means truly bad, then I have no input.

Absolutely!! At least, before NBC decided to "fix" it.
Same goes for Men Behaving Badly. I REALLY enjoyed it till NBC "fixed" it.
mitkraft, I refuse to believe that Herman's Head was a bad show! :D

1) First Wave was on for THREE seasons. I was just getting into it when they cancelled it... they did do a series finale but it wasn't much of a finale. It's a shame, too.
2) Ah yes, Shazam! Love it now, loved it then. Wanted to be Shazam! for Halloween, 1974, but I procrastinated so long my mom didn't have time to make the costume. Stupid TV Land only bought 8 episodes to show... over... and over... and over. At least I have 'em now.

"Dead Last." Loved it... but don't consider it bad at all. :)

Yea, that's it!
You're right, it wasn't really that bad, but I bet the pitch was funny.
"O.K., you take Scooby Doo, but without the dog, and put them in the movie "Sixth Sense".....

I really liked the new Fantasy Island that was on a few years back. I knew it wasn't going to be on for long, but something about it really appealed to me. I'll send another vote out for Push, Nevada as well.
Posted by: mitkraft
Ok, thanks for the afirmation on Herman's Head. Yes, I don't consider it bad. It was probably a little to witty for the general public :) - The guy wh played his lust/gluttony was just too much! I remember the one where that character was "blue" because herman had spent the night with a girl and they only talked all night. Classic!
Oh, and I agree with First Wave, if you didn't see the later ep's they are worth it for Tracy Lords if nothing else (what an actress!) :)
Oh man, I almost forgot about coupling (the US version)! That was shapping up to be a good show. The chick who played Janet from 90210 was too much!
Here's one from the Golden (OK maybe bronze) pile. Anyone remember Alphabet Soup? It was too long ago for me to really remember if it was good or bad, but I remember being pretty into it as a kid. It's since disapeared into oblivion and rarely been spoke of since. btw, I'm talking about the one with the wierd animation and the puppets (marrionettes) who built a spaceship.
Ok, still nobody on the show that aired oposite Ned & Stacey? Don't make me break out the VHS tapes. I may never return, its burried on a tape with Class of '96.
Posted by: allan
I watched that short-lived Tarzan show last fall.
Posted by: DancnDude
I also liked the TV gameshow / comedy "You Don't Know Jack" hosted by Paul Reubens (aka Pee Wee Herman). ABC really didn't give it a chance, but it was fun to watch while it was on.
Posted by: SR7D1
I liked a late 80's early 90's show with Mario Van Peebles. He was a detective or cop and "Hot in the City" by Billy Idol was the theme song.
Can't remember the name of that dang show!

When i was a kid I thought the 'Barny Miller' spinnoff, 'Fish', w/ Abe Vigoda was great. You know, that show was on nearly 30 years ago , and hear Abe still looks as good as he did back then.

After hearing the title to Dead Last, I thought of 2 more that weren't necessarily bad, but didn't stay around long:
The Others-ending really sucked
Freaky Links
Enjoyed both!

I once thought Punky Brewster was the best show ever.

Spy Game - Love that show. It was never on the same day and time the whole short time it was on.
The Dick Van Dyke Show (Variety Show) - Same problem, they kept switching the times.
Quark - I'd forgotten about that one.
Nice Guys - Starred Bob Denver and Alan Hale - was on shortly after Gilligan went off the air.
Captain Nice - Starred Wally Cox
And of course the show rated the all time worst show ever made, and I love it.......My Mother the Car
