DirecTiVo upgrade problem

I am on Satellite, equipment is RCA DVR40.
Goal was replacing 40G with a 120G; later add back the 40G with extra fan.
I never got an image backup! I was using the MFS Tools 2.0 Manual I printed out to make a backup. (Now I see the Hinsdale manual is correct with 'mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos' and I was trying 'mount /dev/hda /mnt/dos')
I never booted the TiVo disk under Windows 2K or XP. The first thing I did was stack my Windows HD's out of the way and work with the TiVo, spare HD's and CD-ROM.
I tried 3 different boot CDs. MFS Tools 2, Sleepers TiVo scripts and TBDv2r6i (has TiVoMad and BlessTiVo.
The first spare drive I tried was a WD 120G. This drive was still locked since it came out of a dead UltimateTV box. (Seems UTV have a problem with tuners going bad, could only receive on one Sat input).
I tried the MFS cd. The BIOS showed all 3 and sized correctly. I tried 10a- Replacing single TiVo drive with larger drive and I tried 10e Adding a new drive to single TiVo. MFS always complained about a size problem and failed. I booted WD Data Lifeguard Tools floppy and it told me the 120G is locked! On to next drive HD.
Day 2, I next tried the MFS cd using a Maxtor 120G. It was formatted in NTFS. After MFS 10a and 10e failed, I used the 120 solo, floppy booted W98, Fdisk and formatted. I tried MFS 10a and 10e again. No Joy!
I found Sleepers TiVo scripts cd. The Error message here is ~boot~
Day 3, Exhausted I placed the 40G back into TiVo. It has welcome screen, Almost screen then blue-- then repeats welcome... Its Gone and all I intended to do was copy to a larger drive.
I read that BlessTiVo has a boot fix. Command "BlessTiVo /dev/hdb bpage" goes without error on 40G. Still will not boot in TiVo box. I have not tried MFS or Sleepers but I assume the boot issue will error again. But I will test this on day 4!
*10a = mfsbackup -aqo - /dev/hdc | mfsrestore -xpi - /dev/hda (120G is Pri Master, 40G is Sec Master)
*10e = mfsadd -x /dev/hdc /dev/hdb (40G is Sec Master, 120G is Pri Slave)
I now have the Feb 19 2004 Hinsdale Manual and will start reading.
Anyone with an idea to get my TiVo back? Upgraded or not

I think your image is bad on the boot drive - especially after the BlessTiVo command. You need to find a new image and restore from that, or buy a replacement drive from a company like us or the others here on the board.

Getting to 'almost there' with the original drive is a bit worrying. That screen is displayed by Linux, ruling out the obvious issues - jumpers, cables, corrupted boot block, etc.
It could be corruption in the MFS partitions, in which case triggering a GSOD with diagnostic mode might help.
Otherwise it indicates a failure in the modem or power supply, which would be bad.
Does it still get to 'almost there' or has BlessTiVo trashed it completely.

'almost there' message has dissapeared after the BlessTiVo bpage command.
I know I have a series 2 box. I never looked at what software version I was running. Can I assume version 4?
