winzip won't unzip files from this page

I wouldn't get it that way, you'll either have to compile it or use one of the supported distros. Download Knoppix. It's a big download, but ddr is set up correctly on that disk.

thanks for the info but no way I can do 700 mb on dial up LOL. I guess I'll just throw the old drives aside for now and maybe try to rescue somehow later

the WD diagnostics kicked back a code of 0225 which is too many errors so it's probably fried anyways

Well, you might be able to find something more managable here: http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php

I don't know which ones have dd_rescue on, but the diagnostics and possibly forensics categories would be likely candidates.
