MFS Tools question by a newbie

Greetings, I'm a newbie who just upgraded a Tivo 2 with MFSTools and it performs just fine. My question is this, I created a backup using the Hinsdale method word for word.
When I tested the backup that resided on my new b drive it booted fine, but all colors were missing from the Tivo screens. ie.. you could see the TV picture right throug the menus.
Does this mean that I do not have a clean backup or would this clean up at some point?
Alss, I installed the B drive on top of the A drive with small rubber feet and tie straps. Is this a potential heat issue.
Thanks

That backup is no good. Either you forgot the -f 9999 parameter or your TiVo drive did not detect as the correct size.

Thanks for the reply. So if I have a drive an A or B failure at a future time what's my recourse.
Also, is it OK for the drives to reside on top of each other?
Thanks again.

If either drive fails completely, you lose the lot and have to reimage the good drive from backup. If you get some warning you can use dd to clone the failing drive.
You probably want to get a bracket so you can fit two drives with room for air flow between them.

Ok, last question. As you mentioned in your first response my backup is no good. What would
I do then if either drive failed and the Tivo would no longer boot?

Then you can do any or all of the following:
1) kick yourself for not having a working backup
2) beg people on the forum for a backup, which isn't really appropriate
3) use a commercial service to restore your ailing unit.
Recommendation: Make a new backup using the -f 4138 parameter; you can backup your dual-drive scenario without affecting it. Then you won't need to execute on any of the aforementioned scenarios should you have trouble down the road.

Thanks for the quick reply. The command that I see for backing-up a 2 drive system is
mfstool backup -6so /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc /dev/hdb.
What is the command you recommend for a solid reliable back-up?
Thanks in advance

That command is not in the current version of Hinsdale. Working from anything other than the current Hinsdale is a recipe for disaster. Your TiVo was designed after the document you're using was written!
The correct command would be
mfstool backup -f 9999 -6so /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc /dev/hdb

Thanks, I just found the latest document dated 2004! I was working on one dated 2002.
Thanks again, I guess I lucked out with the 80GB B upgrade.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that...
