10 gigs reserved for TivoClips (paid programs)?

I have an HDR112 with an added 60 gig second drive running 3.0.01-1-000. According to my /var/log/tvlog, it seems to be reserving about 10 gigs for TivoClips (the Teleworld Paid Programs). I'll see lines like:
Recorder[121]: User recording 59954560 free 531840
Recorder[121]: TivoClip total 10000000 free 9432704
So while I have about 74 gigs of total space, it appears that only about 60 are available for my recordings.
I can also confirm this by looking at the bit rate of the recordings. e.g., when a Medium recording starts, I get a log line like this:
TmkMediaswitch::Trace[119]: using VBR, bitRate=2415000, maxBitRate=2760000
In the Video Recording Quality menu, it tells me it can record 47.5 hours at Medium. So even at the max bit rate, it's only using 47.5 hours * 2.76 Mbit/sec * (1 byte / 8 bits) * (3600 sec / 1 hour) * (1 GiB / 1024 MiB) == 57.6 GiB total for my recordings.
Is it normal for the TiVo to keep this much space reserved? It seems a bit excessive, when a current set of Teleworld Paid Programs only uses about 500 megs. I recently did a "clear and delete everything" because the drives were grinding a lot and the logs complained about fragmentation, but before that I had many months of outdated Paid Programs saved. With only the original 14 gig drive, it must have been able to cope with much less reserved space, and yet I assume it would still have been able to display the ads.
Is there a way to change the amount of reserved space?

The amount TiVo reserves seems to be linked to the total disk size. This was probabaly originally to REDUCE it for 30Gb TiVos, but when you start adding large drives it unfortunately goes the other way. I think there's a maximum, but I'm not sure.
I've not heard of a method to reclaim the space used.

Here's a graph of space availible vs. HD space.

Yes, you get about 10GB less "usable" than you put in at all sizes above 70GB. Some of that is the two boot partitions, var, swap, etc. That's about 2.5GB.
