Navy NCIS 2/24/04

This is more like a rant about the character Agent DiNozzo. But feel free to discuss last nights ep.

Am I the only one who thinks that they are making a mistake by having DiNozzo play an immature idiot. Why would a guy like that be in NCIS. His character seems more like the son of the mayor/governor/senator who gets to be a cop cuz of daddy's influence.

I wouldn't mind it so much if they at least had him be serious once in a while. He just seems incompetent. He is not the "goofball-who-gets-the-job-done" type of guy. He is the "goofball-who-does-enough-to-get-by" type of guy.

Is it just me who sees this? My fiancee thinks I am nitpicking the show. Maybe I am. But overall I like the show. I originally thought it was gonna be a C.S.I. cheap clone and I am glad it isn't. But it is that one thing that bugs he hell outta me.

DiNozzo and the female agent (for the life of me I can't think of her name) seem to have the same banter EVERY WEEK. You can take convos between the 2 of them from every episode and mix them up and you wouldn't really notice. Seriously.

As I am typing this my better half is rolling her eyes. But I can't be the only one who has noticed or been bugged by this. Someone back me up..... anybody? --looks around TiVo community and sees EVERYONE rolling their eyes.-- Oh I guess I am the only one...... well fine. Be that way.

I'm voting with you - I hate this part of the show. Fix DiNozzo or eliminate the character. I'm hoping they'll fix him but every week he seems to get worse.

Posted by: jlb.x

Yep. He kept this from being a better-than-average episode of NCIS. Though, unfortuantely for NCIS, it had nothing on last night's episode of Scrubs...

Posted by: drew2k

All right - If we're nitpicking , I'll agree with you that they need to expand Dinozzo's character beyond bumbling gofer. He has had few opportunities to show leadership or insight into a case, and could use some shoring up. I mean, he's been working with Gibbs longer than the transplanted Secret Service Agent, and Gibbs already trusts her more than Dinozzo? That's a little odd.

Another nit to pick: the relationship between the FBI and NCIS. It is just TOO adversarial and the NCIS does TOO many things that in real life would probably cast doubt on their evidence gathering techniques. How many times has the NCIS actually taken evidence from a crime scene and concealed it from the FBI? It's almost like evidence tampering...

Otherwise, I generally enjoy the show, love Abby, and love the theme song.

I never realized what the theme song was until today's ep. I like it too.

DirecTV lost its link to the Nashville CBS station until about halfway through the episode. They put up a barely watchable (definitely OTA) signal just after the mid-episode break.

The actor who played the colonel is definitely getting a lot of work lately. From JAG to L&O:CI to NCIS.

Posted by: drew2k

He's also the new Joint Chief on the West Wing.

Posted by: Jon J

Right. ;)

If both Jag and NCIS are in the same universe, how can the colonel from last night also be adm. Boone from Jag?

Well obviously they aren't. Two very different characters played by the same talented actor. I suppose they could even meet each other, perhaps one could be used as a decoy for the other in some episode. Phoebe and Ursula are played by the same actress in Friends. True, they are supposed to be identical twins. The idea of two middle-aged, but still in great shape, bald guys looking a great deal alike isn't too farfetched.

I agree about DiNozzo - either show he has some talents beyond the immature wisecracks or transfer him to NCIS:Honolulu.

Posted by: Graymalkin

NCIS: Honolulu? Too good for him. I'd send him to NCIS: Nome.

But CBS established that JAG and NCIS are in the same universe when they set the framework for NCIS during the Harm murder case on JAG, using Gibbs as the lead investigator for NCIS.

Agreed. That does not preclude the same actor from playing two different roles on occasion (hence my reference to Phoebe and Ursula on Friends).

How many times have we seen an actor play a defendant on Law & Order, only to see him/her play a lawyer or witness on L&O or L&O:SVU or L&O:Criminal Intent?

Posted by: IJustLikeTivo

Pretty silly in general. Still love Abby and hate Dinozzo. No way someone who was that goofy in real life would be able to keep a job as a NCIS investigator.

Kinda like Harry Morgan on M*A*S*H... he was *originally* an eccentric General (could be wrong on the rank) that visited the unit for a short time. Then came back as Col Potter later on.

As far as the NCIS though, it seems like it would have been a nice tie-in to use him AS Adm Boone... I suspect maybe they didn't want to establish Boone as a looney so that he could still make appearances on J.A.G. (assuming there is a new episode some day )

I think that as much as Dinozzo is a dweeb, Gibbs is WAyyyYYYYY too full of himself.

And Abbie, while cute enough, is annoying that she always looks like she is gigling, or ready to bust out laughing....

I still don't know why I watch the show. Maybe if there was ANYTHING else that isn't a constant re-run, I wouldn't ;)

IIRC Mac on JAG was originally someone else who was a client and died I think. So character continuity isn't a big thing in that world.

He also is on the West Wing and he was a regular on Alias for a bit. He is popping up all over the place. Maybe he will turn up on Survivor. ;)

He was on alot of shows in the past too. Mostly the same character type each time. Hey, if getting typecast gives you that much work then it is all good.

Catherine Bell (Mac) originally played Harm's girlfriend (Lt. Diane Schonke) in "Skeleton Crew", but that episode was never aired. When CBS took over the series Mac replaced Austin as Harm's partner. Not until "Death Watch" in the third season did we learn that Catherine Bell had appeared on the show before she was Mac.

Case in point, Jerry Orbach's first appearance on L&O was as a kinda sleazy attorney. Now, of course, he is the sometimes sleazy ( ;) ) Det. Lennie Briscoe. What an actor.

Indeed. That's Terry O'Quinn and he always plays small but memorable roles on a lot of TV shows.

But I do agree with the general consensus about Dinozzo. Abby and Ducky are my favorites.

Yep, he was there as a looney general for a court martial. He wanted the black guy to do a "number" before he testified.

Ditto. They're the reason I watch this show. The rest leaves a lot to be desired.

I remember that episode, but never knew the story behind it. Neato. Since they do a lot of "flashback" episodes where characters from the past are played by the regular cast, or DJE playing Harm's dad, etc., I always thought it was supposed to be just a coincidence that she looked just like Mac. Of course, within the universe of the show, I guess it is just a coincidence. My point is that show, as much as I like it, can be a little cheesy at times in that regard; knowing that makes it seem a little less so.

And S. Epatha Merkerson (Lt. Van Buren) was a maid in an early episode. I believe her son was killed or something like that.

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
For future reference, this could be construed as a spoiler for Scrubs. Fortunately I didn't get around to watching either of these episodes until this weekend and watched them back to back. But I think if I had read this before seeing Scrubs, I would have been clued in to the similar story line. And I agree, this wasn't bad but Scrubs did it better.

I have to say, I like Dinozzo a lot, especially his interactions with Abby and Caitlin - I definitely enjoy the humor, but I guess he could use a little more development. And speaking of contradictions, Abby's name was Lilly in the JAG episodes that served as the NCIS pilot eps.
