NEW YORK, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Gemstar-TV Guide International
Inc. (NASDAQ:GMST) said on Friday it signed a multiyear deal to
license its on-screen TV listing technology to Pioneer Corp.
(TOKYO:6773) for its digital televisions and recorders in North
America, Japan and Europe.

The deal, which includes a one-time $14 million payment to
Gemstar and resolves all outstanding litigation between the
companies, also licenses Gemstar's patents to Pioneer for its
digital cable products in North America.

Tokyo-based Pioneer, which makes flat-screen TVs, DVD
players and other consumer electronics, will pay license fees
to Gemstar based on the number of units sold under the
licenses.

A Gemstar spokeswoman declined to disclose the duration of
the license deal.

It is the second such legal settlement for Gemstar, which
last year reached a similar deal with digital video recorder
maker TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ:TIVO)

Los Angeles-based Gemstar still has patent infringement
lawsuits against satellite TV provider EchoStar Communications
Corp. (NASDAQ:DISH) and cable box manufacturer Scientific-Atlanta
Inc. (NYSE:SFA)

Gemstar lost a key ruling over its TV Guide-branded
technology when the U.S. International Trade Commission said
rival on-screen guides did not constitute unfair trade.

I wonder if this means that TiVo can add the grid style guide to the Pioneer units now?

Ugh. While I like the grid style interface, I hate that Gemstar is basically litigating people who want to use it into also licensing the TV Guide branding and other junk.

Hopefully the Pioneer licensing deal isn't as horrid as the cable boxes that display ads inline... then again, I kind of hope that it does, and encourages more people to switch to TiVo. :)
