CSI in the dark

Ok, this one has been bugging me for a while. When we see shots of the CSI team investigating and looking for clues at the scene of the crime, why don't they turn the darn lights on?
We always see them walking around a darkened building ( crime scene) with their flashlights out. This is even when the lights were shown to be on while we witnessed the crime. It's like the power company got wind that no one was going to pay the bill and shut off the power.
Anyone else notice this, or have a possible explanation other than it may simply add to the cloak & dagger effect?

Joan of Arcadia is the same way.
This is a trend that started with the X-Files, I believe. Basically the Director of Photography(if they have them for TV shows) has too much power.
It is, IMO, a trend that needs to stop. For shows like the X-Files it worked... For most other shows, it is silly.

I've also noticed that it's always very dark in the ME room when doing an autopsy, etc. You'd think they'd want lots of light in there.

We've talked about this here before. Someone suggested that Grissom's crew is the graveyard shift.
I also get annoyed at this on many episodes.

Here you go CSI & Flashlights right here on the TC Fourm! :D

I think it's often for effect. But, in some situations, I thought the point was that having light only from their flashlights allows them to focus on small areas at a time. Like doing a grid search when they only want to look at one square foot at a time.

Grissom's squad is the night/graveyard shift. It was finally confirmed (in my mind at least), at the end of that ep about a month back where he changed his recommendation for the promotion from Sara to Nick. They ended the ep with him replacing "Sara" with "Nick" in the recommendation memo, but at the top of the screen you could see his title - Assistant Director, Night Shift Supervisor (or something like that) - after his name on the "From" line.
But they also do it for effect - there's more dramatic lighting opportunities at night, and it looks more mysterious.

Rcrew, thanks for the quick finger work on that!!

Mr. DreadPirateRob,
I don't believe Grissom actually replaced Sara's name on the recommendation. It appeared to not have a name at all until he wrote Nick's name in.
Either way it was a good call. I have a feeling that they are setting us up for Sara dying/getting fired in the season finale. Especially with this whole drinking problem she suddenly developed.

Since there are different shifts, with separation of supervision, how bout if she finally hooks up with Grissom, and moves to day/swing shift? She could still tie into episodes when research brings them together with OT!

Maybe she'll move to New York...

Maybe she'll get a job offer in Paris..

I know in one episode Sara turned on a light in a house and Grissom yelled at her. He said he wanted to see things the sameway the killer did. So he used the lack of light in that sense.

I don't know about that. I think that Kathrine is the one being set up for something major. I think the Sara/drinking thing will be like Grissom's hearing... one day, the problem will just go away.

I think it was established pretty early on that they were the night shift...like in the first season. Grissom was having some kind of power struggle with the day shift supervisor.

I didn't pick up the show until midway through the first season, so I easily could have missed it. I just know that there has been speculation on this board about it prior to that episode airing.
