2/27 Monk **Spoilers**

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Best. Monk. EVER.

This episode was Hilarious. The writers really got it right with this one, both with the mystery of the gold, and putting Monk in awkward situations. And threw in some touching moments of friendship between Sharona and Monk. Monk trusting Sharona to wear Trudy's wedding band, and Sharona's pluck and comfort after the cave in.

The therapy scenes were a scream, espescially the last one where Monk and Sharona had to kiss. Priceless. And perhaps the best dialog was at the end of the show when the Therapist was trying still to get them closer...

Therapist: "I believe in Adrian and Sharona."
Sharona: "I think you should know we're not really married."
Therapist: "Thank god. Good. Keep it that way, huh?"

Hmmm...we enjoyed it, but thought it was one of their weaker episodes.

Yep, lots of nice Monk-Sharona touches.

But the mystery? Blah. It was like a bad episode of Scooby-Doo. ;)

The absolute best part of the episode: The Return of Batmanuel! :D

I laughed more times at this epside than most. Liked the post-kissing scene with the mouth wash. Funny.

The mystery was dopey.

I think the mystery wasn't half as good because we already knew everything from the start. I prefer the episodes where we start out on the same page as Monk and have to figure things out, not where we already know everything but
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
where they hid the gold

THAT'S where i know him from! Thanks =P

The "mystery" part was kinda off this time, but I loved the rest of the show. (For the record, my early thought was that there were somehow small pieces of gold inside the books' covers, but I was close.) But though I love mysteries and love trying to "figure it out", that's not the primary reason I watch the show...so it isn't really disappointing.

When I saw they were going into a marriage counselor, I thought, "Monk and Sharona will look like a married couple bickering, naturally, without having to fake it" ;)

Loved it.

I didn't think this was one of the stronger episodes but a subpar Monk is better than most shows at their best, IMO.

I liked the kissing scene the best. Neither wanted to to it. I'm glad the writers aren't even hinting at some sort of latent interest between these two characters. That would be totally against the way they've always been written. A lot of shows might be tempted to force something here.

If having clues to the mysteries bothers you before watching the whole thing, do what I do and skip the intro that comes before the credits. I do this on the first watching almost every Monk episode, and lately I have been surprised every single episode.

Just when I think Monk can't get any better, it does. I laughed SO HARD at the scene in the mine when Sharona is using the flash to find her way. Tony Shaloub did some fantastic physical comedy there and I'm still laughing about it.

I laughed aloud many times during this one, and I don't do that with many shows. As far as the humor goes, this episode was top notch. There were just too many lines to mention that were hillarious.

I did miss Stotlemeyer, though. But it was good to see the kid get some positive screen time, too.

"Can't talk now, I'm traped in a cave!"

There were a lot of small things in this episode that were funny, and those always add up overall and add to the enjoyment. Tony Shalhoub's timing and manner are so perfect with this character by now. A small line like, "...unless I'm wrong...but I'm not" has just the right pause and emphasis to it that it still makes you smile.

I'm also glad that they wont' push these two together, as has been the trend in other shows that pair up any male/female relationships. I liked that they had Sharona emphasize again here that she was his nurse first before she was his assistant. I would have liked some mention though, of where Benji was this whole time. We as viewers assume that he's with Sharona's sister or staying with friends, but I'd like them to keep up with the premise that she's a single mom and Benji is a huge part of her life. On too many shows (CSI, for one) the single mom aspect is only trotted out when it's needed for some plot contrivance. Here, on Monk, they've been pretty good at being consistent with keeping Benji in the story, including one earlier episode that had Benji along with the two of them on a stakeout because it was a school night, he had to do his homework, and she couldn't leave him at home. Those little details add so much to the character. Though, I'm also not sure that there's much need to add any believability to what is primarily a light-hearted show.

No captain in this episode! Maybe Ted Levine was filming something else?

I'm relatively new to the show, but am loving it! But I am missing something. What is "Return of Batmanuel" in reference to?

Guest star Nestor Carbonell played Batmanuel on the short-lived TV show The Tick (the live-action version).

That shows you how bad a geek I am-I knew Nestor Carbonell from Jesse. :)

Monk and Sharona will never, ever end up romantically involved. It'd violate so many core precepts to the show, and I personally think this episode was in part a "message" that it'd never happen ;)

I agree. I don't think she could ever be anything more than his caretaker. Plus I believe they have hinted and Sharona and the lieutenant a few times.

I believe Monk and Sharona just share a very close friendship.

Nestor Carbonell was in Suddenly Susan. Bruno Campos was on Jesse. An easy mixup, though. I've done it myself. ;)

And...Nestor Carbonell plays Senior Senior Junior on Kim Possible, another favorite show around here. I didn't know that. Oh, the things you learn at imdb! :D

The Tick AND Firefly. You are definitely my kinda guy! :-)

And I also enjoy Monk and Survivor. I've deliberately never watched American Idol, as much because it would probably turn out to be a guilty pleasure as that I simply don't like shows that feature ritual humiliation even if self-inflicted. Too many forgotten memories of elementary school playgrounds, I suppose. :-)

I own only two DVD TV show compilations -- The Tick (live action) and Firefly. Delighted to own them, disappointed the shows were cancelled. Black-cloud despondent that Firefly was cut down before it even really got going.

Agreed. There'd be way, way too many hurdles to a Monk/Sharona romantic pairing, not the least of which would be Monk's ongoing thing of dealing with his late wife.

So many shows get ruined when the "romantic tension" turns to bedplay. And it's nice to know that as close as the characters are, they're not trying to throw Monk and Sharona into that "romantic tension" category.

Ah shoot! You're absolutely right. I actually get a couple of actors and actresses from sitcoms around that time confused. (The redhead on Newsradio and the redhead on Suddenly Susan, for example.)

And I'm actually afraid that this episode was highlighting a possible hookup between Monk and Sharona in the far distant future. PLEASE don't let them take the show this way. I'd hate it.

(Sidenote: anyone else seen that there's a Monk fanfiction site dedicated to the Monk/Sharona concept? Ick.)

Actually, in this case, Tony's line of dialog was wrong. He said 'after' when he shouldn't have. Really bad howler since they had made the big deal about when/after in the phone message scene.

Right -- just like David and Maddie.

Except with David and Maddie, they were setting up sexual tension from the get-go, whereas in Monk, there's never been a hint of it.

Great Episode. I bet the writers started with the "Monk & Sharona" at the marriage counselors first, and then fleshed out the rest of the story from there.
My wife and I were busting up at how married the two of them seemed.

I also agree that this was a scooby do mystery, not that that was bad, just added to a fun episode.

Don't worry about it, Angie...I fully believe the closing scene was specifically meant to shoot that down. :D

Good point. You know, side note: the woman who played the "therapist" was hillariously idiotic. She's a great actor coming from the improv world. She's been in a couple of really funny movies.

And I'm already mourning that there's only one new episode left. Blargh.

My wife thought she recognized that actress from "A Mighty Wind", and I see she was also in "Best of Show", two great comedies.

Yes. I own both of them-fantastic movies both. (The movies that Eugene Levy and Christopher Guest make are the only ones I own, and they are SO worth the money.) She so very good at the kind of part she played in Monk-and in the movies, but I have to say my favorite is the former porn star turned smarmy folk singer in A Mighty Wind. :)
