The Screen Savers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: lfrazier

I just got done watching The Screen Savers. When they did their check in with Tech Live Jessica Corbin was on the other end with her new job as an anchor. While I won't be missing her technical contributions to the show, she sure was nice to look at.:(

Posted by: DanB

Of course, when she left, they did the good ole stand-by "you'll still see me, I'll drop by and some spots on TSS".

How many times have we heard that and never see them again (Kate, Martin, Kat, Morgan, etc.)?

Posted by: Worf

Martin did come by during one of the "LAN Parties", and I think Morgan did as well.

I guess that's what the "spots" were - a 10 second shot in front of a computer on thursdays.

Posted by: ewolfr

Jessica started her stint at Tech Live last week. The really funny part is in the intro to TSS they still have Jessica listed as part of "The Gang" with pictures of Sarah, Kevin and Yoshi. I wonder how long it will take someone to notice that and fix it.

Morgan has been on the show a few times.

Yes, I've noticed it's still hanging on too. Probably about as long as it'll take Patrick to remember to turn his mic on at the beginning of the show.

On Wednesdays TSS, Kevin (the Dark Dipper) had a Dark Deal (how is this Dark?) of Ahead Nero 6 for $7.99. This is an OEM version of Nero. I purchased an OEM Nero at a flea market 2 years ago. It would not reconize my CDRW drive. It looks like the OEM version of Nero is hard coded for the model of drive that it is suppose to be sold with. If that is true, then Kevin will have alot of people mad at him.

I was tuning around on the radio last weekend, and found Leo's radio show on KFI in LA. He is not nearly as obnoxious on the radio. He isn't interupting people or making stupid jokes.

He also has most all his KFI shows archived at http://www.leovilletownsquare.com/archives

I like to listen to his shows while working on other projects.

I too find it a little obnoxious on TSS when he interupts callers or other TSS players. However, I do find 90% of his jokes/stunts funny. There are days I ONLY watch TSS to see what nutty or crazy thing he's going to do.

I'm sorry, but last night with the rocket ship hat he was wearing made me crack up because he basically looked like a big penis. :D

I for one won't miss her at all. Not in the least bit.

I really only tune into TSS for Leo. Most of their segments are so basic that it's hard to get anything out of them. I thought Call for Help was for the beginners and TSS was going to be for "advanced" users. Oh well, I guess if you've been doing this for over 20 years, it's hard to find new stuff that would fit into a 5 minute segment.

Posted by: smak

They really should add another show above the level of TSS. I mean, just dump one of the billion repeats for 1/2 hour, and do a DARK TIPS show or something like that.

-smak-

Posted by: HTH

I'm surprised at the lack of mention of the episode of Unscrewed With Martin Sargent where they let through an uncensored version of the content at whitehouse.com. They must be very disappointed about their ratings when they do that and there's no public response.

Well, they definitely don't want to get too technical on TSS. When the researcher on microtubule water cooling technology was getting a little technical you could tell in Patrick's face that he was getting orders in his ear to redirect the discussion. It was obvious.

They want more of the USA Today of technical talk.

True but that's better than no technical talk. What else is there to compare it to nowadays? TSS is very watchable (unlike call for help). All in all, Tech TV is probably my favorite channel. I wonder if they will replace Jessica with a gal or if it is now Foo's gig. I hope they bring in another gal.

Posted by: dmdeane

Yeah, if they want to chase away 99% of their already small audience, all they have to do is get obsessed with all the technical details and lose control of the show whilst the techies lapse into jargon that only a tiny handful of people understand.

If you want more detailed info about the stuff they talk about on TSS, go to their website and read the articles. That's what it is there for.

So when is Sarah getting naked?

Where did Sumi go? I thought she had "big-time" potential.
Is she a news anchor somewhere?

Yes, Sumi moved on quite some time ago to go to one of the affiliates. I can't remember, but I think she went to a station in LA.

Another one who left was Brett Larson. He moved on to a station in NYC. I think its the NBC affiliate there.

Posted by: Frylock

I actually liked Brett Larson. He had a good TV presence. Jessica is about as useless as you can get

Posted by: Marco

Google says Sumi went to MSNBC.

Posted by: Oldandslow

Brett Larson is at WCBS in NYC see:

http://www.brettlarson.com/

Sumi Das is at MNBC as noted:

http://www.gogomag.com/sd2/ at Talking Heads.

Erica Hill went to CNN:

http://www.gogomag.com/eh2/ at Talking Heads.

Playboy did a feature on Women at Tech-TV:

http://www.playboy.com/features/features/techtv/

On another note:

Am I the only one to be bothered by Patrick ("basically", "actually") Norton? I swear he said "basically" three times in one sentence.

I really enjoy Leo, Sarah, Joshi, Fofo and Kevin. Please, no more haranges by Patrick. It's gotten so bad I mute the sound when he speaks.

Holy crap. I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets annoyed by his "well, you know what, actually's". He does it constantly.
Leo really drives this show. I think the folks at TechTV realize this fact also. Whenever Leo is there he does all the interviews. When he's not there Patrick is exposed as the terrible interviewer he is. I wouldn't mind if they threw him off the show and made it Leo and Kevin.

Posted by: HTH

Now, now, let's take a step back here....

Posted by: jwjody

I don't get TechTV anymore but when I did I couldn't stand Leo. He would alway interrupt the person he was interviewing. I would always FF through Leo.

Kate
:(
sniffffffff
I miss Kate.

Posted by: DanB

I do get tired of Patrick (of TSS, not Spongebob Squarepants). For being on the show the amount of time he has, he seems to get tongue tied too often.

Another annoyance is Yoshi's laugh. Sounds like it belongs to someone that would be in a tower with a rifle.

Posted by: Swirl_Junkie

I was just thinking that aboud Yoshi during the recent Cardboard Mod. It is crazy annoying.

True. For what they do they do it pretty well. I can't say that their current staffing and program handling has been my favorite but it's doable.

Oh, please banish the thought! They should ban Dan Huard from anything that has to do with teleprompters after that trainwreck of an opening he did a couple days ago.

Posted by: TivownerSrsII

Talk about bad show replacements.... did you see Cat Shwartz massacre Call for Help? Talk about a train wreck.. she kept talking over Roger and making lame comments every five seconds. About the only time she didn't was when it was the intro to the T-mobile call of the day. Hmmm. I wonder why.
And whats up with Cat always bragging about owning an I-book. Its making me really sick... And Leo's always plugging the xbox... does he get a compensation for everytime he mentions the xbox?

Posted by: bevinst

Cat plugs her computer because it is a brand new powerbook that she's only had for a few days -- New Toy Syndrome.

Leo plugs every thing he owns and likes. He's even plugged TiVo a lot, even 'tho now he normally refers to the other website that talks about things we can't.

Agreed! I found myself yelling SHUT UP at the screen. Unless you have something to add you should keep your mouth shut. We are the audience not you you dumb *****.

Posted by: lfrazier

As far as the Patrick and Leo thing goes, I find myself liking Patrick a whole lot more when Leo is not around. When they are together it always seems that Patrick is frustrated because he gets cut off or he is trying to get Leo back on topic. When it's Patrick and Kevin he handles himself a whole lot better. I think Leo is great. I think Patrick is great. I just think the chemistry between them doesn't always work.

That was kinda funny... he shot those x/y coordinates across that graph with a three second explanation of each line on the graph, and I kinda went "huh." I had to backup a couple times for it to sink in.

What is it with this station? No money? Anytime anyone is on for any length of time (except Leo), they get replaced. Must've asked for a raise over the $6.50 they probably get.

I bought it and it works just fine burning CDs with my firewire La Cie DVD/CD burner. I haven't gotten it to write to a DVD yet, however.

I just got mine and it works great, updated and all. What I like about it is that DVD Shrink burns right to Nero.

Kevin Rose made a comment about being paid in the mid-30's a few weeks ago. I was shocked to hear they make so little, but he is only 25 or so.

I believe he is younger than 25. I am not sure if he is even 21. Sarah points out how she is legal, implying that he isn't.

I don't think he is a college graduate. I think I heard he started college, but dropped out.

So, if he is paid in the mid-30's, he is overpaid.

Posted by: quarkman97

Did anyone see the interview that Patrick did this week with the severe weather guys? I was cringing during the whole thing. The weather guys had no stage presence whatsoever and Patrick looked like a deer in headlights half the time with misworded phrases and awkward pauses during the whole thing.

I got about half way through it and fast forwarded it because I could not take it anymore.

Leo, from having so much experience with TV, makes the show. Always has something to say, quick on his feet, ready to do get rid of the awkward silences. I like to think of him as the "dad" of the whole group.

What does everyone think of the interaction between Sarah and Kevin? My gf has found a new reason to watch the show with me (bonus). It's like everything that Sarah says she hangs on. She really likes all the shirts she wears, too. My gf even went out and got a "I love my geek" shirt. I was floored.

Foo is worthless. Do they really need that Bretano kid to JUST run the LAN party? Why doesn't he do the phone thing too. I'd rather see that position combined into one, IMHO. All Foo is good for is a punchline.

Mid-30's is barely a subsistance wage in San Francisco. Big deal... so he doesn't have a college degree. Doesn't mean a THING in the entertainment business (in most businesses it doesn't mean a thing, but they pretend it does).

They really need to get their act together at Tech TV in terms of hosts... the subs are pretty much worthless, and Leo is gone more and more lately. (Call for Help with Roger and Cat hosting is painful to watch... I just don't.)

I saw that and I totally agree. You could tell Patrick knew it too. It was like a real "Oh Poop!" moment for him. That's the biz, though.

1. I doubt the really make that little. They've all been there a while and I can't imagine that with the name recognition they have built up they must have some decent options if they wanted to do something else to make more money. Also, they have a lot of toys. More than you would expect if they lived in SF and make mid 30's.
2. They (Kevin, Foo and Sarah) do share an apartment to save money as do most single people in SF. Prices are so high that living alone is very difficult.
3. They are all older than you think.

1. Kevin said it on air during a discussion that he made mid-30's.

2. Actually, they did a housecall and it showed Kevin and Dan live together. Kevin often refers to "going over to Sarah's place."

3. Sarah has said before that she's 26 and she just said two episodes that she's older than him. Kinda narrows it down.

Don't you have to make >$900,000 to live above poverty level in San Francisco? :)

Actually, a friend of ours (who made $130k) moved there and claims she needed to have 3 roommates to make ends meet. Not sure if that's true.

I'll take the good old midwest, where you can live like a king on $200k.

Posted by: tomo_kun

I never saw an episode of TSS with kate.... :(. I did see her in real life at gen con! I even gave her an elbow rub because she had pink eye. I saw adam there (who now sucks), but only seeing him run past me trying to go to the restroom.

Posted by: smak

Leo & Patrick used to do a few compusa tours a year, I think it's possible that Kevin and a few other so do so in-store stuff to make some extra money.

Kind of like Howard Stern's crew does, although the techtv people don't promote it to that extent.

Indeed it was. They even showed his futon on camera once. There were references to it being parties... without the LAN.

Yeah, pretty much. I chatted with him a bit when I called in with a question... it was before he was on camera "talent." He said the futon was so he could drink and stay overnight where ever he was, so he wouldn't have to drink and drive. Darn nice guy, at least over the phone. :)

I pretty much hate all of the TechTV personalities besides Mikala Parara(sp?), did she leave? I haven't watched in forever. Oh man, last nights show was horrible.
That segment on Linux with Kevin was horrible. I was interested in fedora so I was looking forward to that one. I got NO info I could use. They need to have a rule stating that Pat and Leo cannot be gone at the same time. If they are gonna have them both gone, they need to hire Wil Wheaton as a permanent guest host because he is a geek who knows how to do TV.

I agree that Thursday's show was terrible. It's as if they decided to let "the kids" run TechTV for a day. Any time Leo is away I find myself fast forwarding through most of the show, but last night the only part I watched was the Linux segment because Chris DiBona knows his stuff. Kevin annoys me more than anyone; I don't know how many times I've heard him talking about stuff and it's apparent he doesn't completely grasp what he's talking about. That, and he moves his hands WAY too much while talking. My wife pointed it out to me once, and now I can't help but notice it and it drives me crazy. But I guess that's more my problem for letting it bug me in the first place ;)

Not only the Rock step, but the hands in the pocket, and the fact that he always looks like an unmade bed..

Leo is classy and professional looking, and Patrick looks like a slob..

Although Leo could shut his noise hole sometimes... I always hate it when I tune in to find out something, and Leo talks through the whole segment, and doesn't let the guest do what he was supposed to.

And has ANYONE EVER gotten any useful information from Yoshi ????

Well, I think the producers are trying to hit multiple demographics with this show. You have Leo, the older, experienced computer professional. You have Pat trying to keep the thirty-ish crowd happy. You know... the folks who grew up on the border of a 'casual workplace' and a professional job. His speaking doesn't reflect a twenty-something and his looks don't fit the 'older' crowd. So, he's just a tweener.

Then you have the 'kids'... clueless Foo, Kevin who tries to make everything 'dark' sound cool and hip, Sarah - now the only chick who tries to make every 'tip' sound amazing and useful, Yoshi - while a little older he is a the staff tinkerer.

Now, it doesn't take a whole lot of imagination to know what they were looking for a year ago. They were trying to push in a younger male audience. There were lots of ScreenSavers girls and every one of them were in either tight or revealing low cut tops and miniskirts. (Even Megan would attempt the skirt thing once in a while.) Obviously they were looking for the horny factor.
