(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

This is my 1st upgrade i wanna replace my existing 120g tivo drive w a new 120g wd hd. I just wanna have a backup in case the current one dies or crashes.

This is the error I'm getting

Source Drive size is 126 hrs
Backup image will be 126 hrs.

uncompressed backup size : 1466mb

Restore failed: Backup target not large enough for entire backup by itself.

Now my new hd is formated w fat32. Not sure why I'm getting this error.
I'm following the guide from http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com/step1.php

"replace w 1 drive"

this is what I'm typing

mfsbackup -Tao - /dev/hdb | mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi - /dev/hdd

now hdb = my tivo drive under Primary Slave
hdd = new hd under Secondary Slave

Both drives are set as slave.

I'm even typing this command and nothing same error

mfsbackup -f 9999 -so - /dev/hdb | mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi - /dev/hdd

Any help would be much appreciated.

One more thing I made a backup image if my tivo drive and I got a file named backup.bak and its 315mb in size. According to the prompts it was a successful image back up.

What model box is this coming out of? This seems fairly large for an original drive.

Samsung SIR- S4120R model

The reason that message is displayed is simple. Most TiVo's are shipping with maxtor hard drives which are just a little bigger than WD not much mind you but enough to cause this error. There is a way around this either use another 120GB maxtor or get any 160GB.

Then it may be that the new WD drive is just a bit smaller than the old one - and that won't work for either type of backup. Try checking theh specific sizes from the Linux bootup and see which is larger. You may be able to make this work by not changing the swap size (leave out the "-s 127).

Looks like we posted at the same moment with the same thought, DVDKingdom. Just to be clear, the drive that comes in that box (S4120R) is actually a Western Digital, but it's not a WD you can buy off the shelf - it's a Home Enterntainment version. So it'll be a little different size-wise, potentially.

Bummer weird. I figured since both drives are Western Digital 120g hardrives I figured they would be the same except for model #.

The tivo has the WD1200LB

New drive is WD1200JB

Finally got it to work. Removed the "-s 127" command. Thanks Weaknees!
I had to delete and clear all cause non of my recording were copied over.
So now that I have finished setup I have a question? where are my local channels? Getting channel not available message and it doesn't appear on my guide. Do I gotta call DTV or do I have to wait a few hrs?

I ran Phone setup and got latest download but no software upgrade.
still on 3.1.1b

You'll usually find that the -x on the restore side will cause this error too. Restoring to a drive the same size as the original is a special case as the normal restore options in Hinsdale expand the image (which is normally what you want!) and make it too big to fit.

The Maxtor 120Gb drives are about 2Gb larger than the other brands' 120Gb models, so fiddling with the size of the swap partition doesn't buy you enough space to compensate.

Isn't 3.1.1b the current version for DTiVoes? (As you cloned your current drive, why are you expecting a software upgrade?)

I was hoping to get the 3.1.1c software upgrade after dialing in.
Thanks for the info. Guess I'll buy a 160g drive for the backup.

For locals - wait a few hours. If they don't arrive, call DTV and ask them to reload the locals and they should pop back on.
