Expanded the new Upgraded drive Help!

Hi all I am new here so please don't mind me sounding like a moron, but I am following the Hinsdale instructions on how to replace a single A drive with a new larger single a drive.

I followed the instructions to make a backup, restored the backup to the new big drive, put it back into the Tivo to test, it worked fine, then put it back into the PC to expand it. when I input this command line:

mfsadd -x /dev/hdc (expanding single larger A drive)

I get this error message: Unable to open MFS drives.

Am I missing something here? Don't I have to mount something first?

I think I am missing something simple. I am stuck at this step.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you are using a Maxtor drive, then you make have locked the drive by putting it in a Series 1 TiVo. This is one reason we recommend doing the restore and expansion all in one step.

Watch your boot sequence and see how the drive shows up (manufacturer and size) and see if this gives you clues. You may need DiskUtil to unlock the drive.

Your right, I see that, its being reported as 10MB. SO should I try running qunlock? Is that the best option?

If so, which steps are best to take from here.

I appreciate your help very much!

DiskUtil seems to be a better option than Qunlock - Robert S says so and he's a pretty good authority on this (and many other) subjects.

SUCCESS! Worked like a charm!

Now, last question for the day. What is the best method to change settings in the netowrk card? I have a cachecard with lan adapter installed and was wondering what is the best way to change settings. Do I put the hard drive into the pc and run a utlility?

Also, this is new Tivo Unit that I have not made a daily call with yet. Should I make the daily call first then adjust the network settings?

Either way, I still need to know how to change these settings.

Thanks alot.

DiskUtil is better in that if you run qunlock on a drive that isn't locked you can permanently lock it, thus destroying it. DiskUtil checks that it's safe to execute the unlock command.

qunlock will work if you use it correctly, but people see to run it 'on a hunch' and destroy their drives. So it would be better if DiskUtil was the default unlocker and qunlock faded into obscurity, but it's not in my power to make that happen.

Well, for our part, we'll do some testing and likely change our upgrade instructions to recommend (and maybe host) DiskUtil.
