I dont know how many times I hit that stupid button because it is right above the mark forum read button:mad:

Hi...I am sorry to say this will not be moved. It really must not be an issue is my guess for you are the first to ever mention it from either this site or AVS Forum. They do change color based on which one you are pointing at. So, maybe that will help.

The site marks itself read quite readily without using any of the options, for me. Sometimes it's a little too eager to do so, in fact.

Do you have to close the website first? If I look at a forum, then leave it and come back, it still has the new post icons.

If I come back immediately, it's all unchanged. But if I let it sit for a while, or come back later, it's marked read. Basically it's the amount of time since your last activity. Closing the browser doesn't enter into it, generally.
