Extinct Fast Food

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: SparkleMotion

So I'm driving to work today and I'm suddenly thinking about this place I used to enjoy years ago called Zantigo Taco. They had some really great stuff (fast food great is not the same as REAL food great, I know) but they were bought out and shut down by Taco Bell (those ba$tards!).

Another place I used to kind of like but never see anymore is RAX Roast Beef, kind of a poor man's Arby's (okay, poorer man's).

Any places you used to like but are no more?

Posted by: moondoggie

Naugles (I think that was how it was spelled). It was like a cross between Taco Bell & Del Taco, but better!

Posted by: Fish Man

This isn't really a response to the question, but:

There are a couple of national Fast Food chains that I'd regularly patronize if they had a store reasonably near to where I work and/or live but they don't.

They are:

Dairy Queen (Nearest store about 40 miles away.)

Jack in the Box (Nearest store about 60 miles away.)

Man, I used to love Rax. Really good roast beef sandwiches and the best milkshakes.

As as kid, I ate at Burger Chef all the time. Whatever happened to them?

Posted by: SparkleMotion

Oh...and I remember a place in the midwest (Omaha?) called Runza Hut (a runza is an odd sort of cabbage & seasoned meat roll). Very different and a nice change of pace. Anyone know if they still exist?

[edit]: I guess they still do. Maybe I imagined the cabbage? [edit again]: Maybe I didn't!

I believe they were bought out by Hardee's. A few years back (before making the switch to Thickburgers), Hardee's brought back 'The Big Chef' burger, but I don't think it lasted too long.

Where I went to college, we had a taco chain called Taco John's. Different variety from Taco Bell, and I used to love their Potato Ole's. I know they were just glorified tater tots, but they were good!

I also used to love Noble Roman's Pizza. The only place I've found it lately is at the food counter of a local bowling alley. :-(

And finally, the one I miss the most....Dunkin' Donuts. After Krispy Kreme hit STL, all the Dunkin' Donuts were bought out by some POS called Donut King, which then closed half the stores, and turned the other half into combination donut and liquor stores. Figure that one out. I was impressed when I went to Boston last summer, since there are roughtly 1,000 Dunkin' Donuts in Boston alone! I ate there almost every day. Good stuff!

I think there's still a couple of these around. Maybe at rest stops along I-95.

A lot of cool fast-food places don't make it this far south... we don't have Hardees or Krystal in the Fort Lauderdale area..........

One place that's now extinct is Sonic.

Rax still exists. There is one a couple of miles away from here.

Not extinct, but nowhere near me are...

Jack in the Box
In-N-Out Burger

(probably just as well those aren't near me)

I still see ads for Sonic from time to time. Didn't Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie work at one during "The Simple Life"?

Maybe they pulled out of your area though.

There are plenty of Sonics around this area, they keep opening more and more of them up too.

Growing up in Florida there was a local chain(?) called the Char-Hut.

I was going to mention PP in my thread but thought nobody would no what I was talking about. :)

It seems that the RR that are left are basically Hardee's, who bought them. I loved the Roast Beef sandwich because I loved the sauce. When Hardee's bought them it changed. I don't like cole slaw but I lot of people I knew love it there.

All the Arby's in this area are owned by the same franchisee.

That franchisee bought all the Rax stores a little over 10 years ago. Those that weren't particularly close to an Arby's, they converted to an Arby's, those that were, they re-sold to someone who wouldn't operate them as a Rax.

I was keenly aware of why the Rax's were all closing because I was dating a young lady who worked in the headquarters of that Arby's franchisee at the time.

I miss the A&W restaurant that was in my home town in MA when I was a kid. There was also a little drive-up burger place called Burger Express in the area that disappeared 10+ years ago...

There are lots of Sonic's around me.

As far as I can tell, they're doing well.

I like their food, but you have to get it to go!

Eating while smelling the exhaust from 20 other vehicles while the people in the car next to you have the hip-hop with the NC-17 rated lyrics turned up to "jet-engine-at-10-feet" decibel levels boom-booming through their 2000 watt subwofer system that completely fills their trunk and back seat just doesn't cut it for me!

Posted by: jgickler

Taco John's still exist. I visited one last October in Iowa City. Love the taco burgers.

Sonic is definately still in business, in fact they just built a new corporate headquarters in downtown OKC on the bricktown canal.

The one that I miss was the Dillburger in Iowa City. Basically they seasoned their burgers with dill, had fried dill pickles and were very good fast food. Unfortunately they also went out of business in the late 90's.

Posted by: doom1701

The most recent one to die around here was Hot & Now--all of the stores closed overnight, with no notice to employees. Never ate there, though--I guess it was pretty nasty stuff.

I really miss Spads pizza. Not sure if they all disappeared, or just in this area. It was a drive up pizza by the slice place. Greasiest pepperoni pizza you could find. Really good stuff.

Gotta ask...were the buns made of dill dough? :D

Wow, I remember them! What a blast from the past.

When I was a very little kid in NJ, my mom would take us to Goody's (or Goodies?). They had great hamburgers you'd order at the window and eat outside like the old style McDonald's buildings. That was years ago.

Anybody remember Wesson Burger? A chain of burger restaurants run by Wesson oil. (Yeah, good name-- that's what I want -- a burger cooked in Wesson oil (not really).)

There's a Taco John's literally not more than 5 minutes from where I'm sitting... I love their chicken softshells and chicken quesadilla. I'd offer to fedex you some, but I don't think you'd want it when you got it. :)

This weekend I noticed the last A&W in my area had changed it's name. There are a couple KFC/A&W's combo restaruants in NorCal but none near San Jose.

Whataburger , maybe not dead... but I never see them. Same goes for Bob's Big Boy.

Posted by: AJRitz

Hardee's bought out a bunch of the smaller operators here in KC in the late 70's/early 80's. I'm pretty sure that they even bought out the few Jack-in-the-Box stores that were here in KC. My favorite that got bought out was Smak's. They had a walrus named Smaky as their mascot. Good burgers and they were the first fast-food burger place that I can remember that had a full condiment bar where you fixed up your burger yourself just the way you liked it. I think I remember having my birthday party there when I was about 5 years old. My dad dressed up like a clown and scared the crap out of a bunch of my friends.

Whataburger is still around. There are quite a few here in Phoenix. It looks like they're mainly in the southwest. www.whataburger.com

And as for Sonic: www.sonicdrivein.com

Plan your vacations accordingly. :)

One place I remember from when I was a kid is Pup & Taco. I don't remember ever having a taco from there, but they had good corn dogs & chili dogs.

Are "Steak and Shake"s still around?

Posted by: Redleg

Like doom noted, we recently lost all our Hot N Nows; used to eat there in high school (when you could get two burgers, fries, and drink for about $2) but only once in the last few years (and that not by my choice). We also had a local Mexican chain Ole Taco go under in the last couple years. That and Burger Chef were my favorite restaurants as a kid.

My favorite sloppy greasy burger chain -- Mr. Fables -- went out of business a couple years ago too. That was a sad day. RIP, "Mr. Fabulous" -- a double cheeseburger with tomato, lettuce, and a perfect chopped olive/mayo dressing. The whole burger just glistened with grease, even the bun. Add in an order of giant, fresh homemade onion rings, and you had truly unhealthy food the way it was meant to be eaten.

Posted by: Savafan1

Arthur Treacher's is still around. I actually went to one last week.

And Steak and Shake's are all over the place here. They seem to be opening opening a bunch of new ones. And they finally take credit cards.

Now, if we could just get In-N-Out Burger to come to the midwest....

Rest stops are where fast food chains go to die. I've seen Roys all over I-95, and the New Jersey Turnpike. Bob's Big Boy is also big in rest stops, and there is an Arthur Treachers in one of the stops, I think in Maryland.

I think Roy Rogers actually still exists in Midtown Manhattan near Times Square, of all places. I used to *love* the fixins bar. Fresh (or, at least cold) veggies for your burger, piled as high as you wanted. Mmmmm.....

Another one that died lately (not exactly fast food) was Fuddrucker's. Is that still around anywhere?

Oh hell yeah!

When I went away to college, the closest Steak 'n Shake was 90 minutes away. I took a road trip up to Iowa City one weekend with my girlfriend, and after a night of drinking we drove down the highway only for me to spot a Steak 'n Shake. The driver finally had to turn around and go back because I was making such a big deal out of it. I LOOOVVE Steakburgers! Just had one on Saturday.

Posted by: Carfan

Wetson's - great fries and burgers. Only familiar with them in the Metro NY area, Long Island specifically.

Never knew what happened to them , I was a wee bit of a lad when they vanished!

Posted by: Fish Man

Do Shakey's pizza places still exist?

When I was a kid, they were NOT fast food. They made your pizza to order, everyone sat at very long rough-hewen wooden tables that went all the way accross the room, and they all had a live bluegrass band playing two or three nights a week. (When I was a kid, my mother was taking guitar lessons from a guy who played banjo with a Shakey's bluegrass band.) When the bluegrass band wasn't playing, there was a player piano in the place (instead of a juke box) that you could load a roll into the piano and play it for a quarter (or maybe it was $0.10). They even had current pop hits on player-piano rolls!! :) They were a really, really cool place when they were set up like this!

By the time I was in college, Shakey's had devolved into a generic fast-food place with pre-prepared pizza by the slice, certainly no live bluegrass band, but a few still had a player-piano in them.

A few years after that, AFAIK, they went bye-bye for ever.

Posted by: dylanemcgregor

So this place wasn't a chain, and they weren't real fast, but we had a place called Mikey's Chilli and Cheesesteak around here for awhile that had the world's best fries. They also had a grilled veggie sandwich that couldn't have possibly been any good for you. :D I still wake up mornings craving it. :(

It is really too bad they had to close. They were kind of becoming an anchor point in our dilapidated suburb square. People really did make special trips there from many miles away. After 9-11 they really took a big hit in customers. They just weren't ever able to recover. They sold out to a guy who opened up another burger joint. Just what we needed. (says the semi-vegetarian) The burger joint only lasted a little over a year.

The only place I really miss are the Dairy Queen's. The franchise owner in this area closed them all, and there are no close ones. When we went to Victoria recently we ate at one on the way - it was wonderful.

We have Long John Silver's and A&W combo restraunts around here... I went to one once.

Tippin's recently closed here - I miss their pie. And Schlotskeys (which I can't even begin to spell) have closed two restraunts, but one now has a sign that says "Re Open Soon" - they are doing lots of construction on that road, so I think they closed during that, and now that the road is done in front of it, they are going to re-open. A Fazoli's closed next door to them, along with an Arby's. They probably all closed because of the construction (which is a major pain, and I avoid that road at all costs). But I still miss them all... I eat fast food way too often :D

I wouldn't really call that fast food, but they did have great pies. Here in St. Louis, you can still buy the pies at Dierbergs grocery stores, but I don't know if they sold at grocers outside of this area. Every holiday we still get a Tippins French Silk Pie...good stuff.

Actually, I partially answered my own question from my post above.

They apparently still exist as they have a web site.

However, has anyone in these forums eaten at one lately? Are they any good?

When they were a restaurant, that prepared pizza to order, my memory is that their pizza was excellent!

However, when they had "devolved" into a fast food place with pre-prepared pizza slices, their pizza became no better than grocery store frozen pizzas like Totinos or Red Barron. That is to say, edible, but a far, far cry from freshly baked pizza.

What are they like today? Any good?

I think the downsizing occurred due to the rising cost of Tabasco sauce.

Lots of Sonics around me in Dallas.. They seem to be growing.. It wasn't too long ago when there werenr very many at all. They even have them in some of the local mall food courts.

Whataburger is a live and well in Texas.. As someone mentioned, they are pretty much concentrated in Texas and the Southwest.

Steak and Shake recently entered the Dallas market, and there are now several locations.

I've seen some Shakey's around Los Angeles... Not sure if they are realted to the Shakey's chain others are talking about.

From the 70's in the Northeast:
Wetsons (previously mentioned)
Burger Queen (Norwalk, CT)
Carroll's ( my 1st fast food chain experience)

There's plenty of Fuddruckers and Sonics in this area! I love it.

I miss Jack in the Box. There's only one in my state and it's 4 hrs away. But, my it's also the city my parents live in so everytime I go visit them, I make sure Jack in the Box gets my business.

As far as Dairy Queen goes, they're all over this town too. I stay away from them, personally, because there are some major cleanliness issues. So bad, in fact, that several of them are branded "unsatisfactory" by the health board now and then.

I haven't seen a Pizza Inn in years. All the ones around here closed along time ago. There's a Del Taco in Kennesaw, GA so I know they're still around. It's a Mrs. Winter's/Del Taco combo restaurant. I guess they're trying to compete with the KFC/Taco Bell restaurants.

A few gray cells shook loose and I remembered these two from my youth...

Little Tavern - a burger joint akin to White Castle. Local to DC and No. VA (?)

Ollie's Trolly - in the middle of various parking lots were the trolly-shaped little buildings that sold great greasy burgers and fries.

Anyone remember those?

I grew up in Chesterfield...I know for sure you can buy the pies at Dierberg's Market Place at Clarkson and Baxter, my brother still works there when he's home from college.

When you say the Tippins in Chesterfield, are you referring to the one that used to be in the mall at Clayton and 141? I don't remember what it's called, but it was bought and turned into the world headquarters of Charter Communications.

You are right though, the best part of Tippins was their pies....the soup was okay, but the rest of it was pretty much crap.

Oh, and there is at least 1 Del Taco still here in St. Louis right by Saint Louis University.

There were a couple of "Backyard Burger" places put up here, but they did not last long. I don't know if it was a chain or locally owned. They cooked the burgers over charcoal and was specially ventilated. One of the best burger I had ever had, could smell that place blocks away.

While Taco Bell is obviously still kicking, I miss the bacon taco and the chili cheese burrito. When I visited my parents in St Louis, they had the chili cheese but none on the East coast seem to have them.

The bacon taco was wonderful- only bacon meat with lots of ranch dressing and cheese. About the only way they could have made it less healthy would be to put it in one of those new fried flatbread things they have.

Due to some trademark issues, they're called "Rally's" in some places and "Checkers" in others. (Originally Rally's and Checkers were separate and similar chains and they merged.)

They are called "Rally's" here and are practically on every street corner. There are more Rally's in New Orleans than McDonald's, Burger King, or Wendy's. This is probably because Tampa Florida (where their corporate headquarters are) and New Orleans were their original two test markets when they started out.

IIRC, Rally's/Checker's are very proud of their high numbers of minority-owned stores. I vaguely remember seeing something about that on TV or somewhere a few years back--it's really a big deal for them.

There was a short-lived chain called G.D. Ritzy's that I liked a lot.

Posted by: Graymalkin

I wonder if anyone has a Wienerschnitzel or a ZumZum around.

Posted by: FatherTed

I used to love a place called G.D. Ritzy's. It was started by several executives that broke away from Dave Thomas at Wendy's and started their own chain. VERY good hamburgers. It was started in Columbus, Ohio and had grown to quite a number of locations in the midwest. Then, it seems that they may have gone bankrupt. They started closing stores and then suddenly they were completely gone.

Last year it seems that there might have been a resurrection of the name. They seem to be back as Ritzy's. The new website 'history' talks about the 80's operation and how their ice cream was voted best in the US by People magazine but there's not discussion of what actually happened.

It only says "In December 2002, a new management team was brought in to reposition and update the concept and to begin opening new restaurants."

Unfortunately, they seem to have moved their operations to Texas and that's where they're focused on opening new locations right now.

Posted by: TiVolcano

Man, you guys are blowing my mind. I remember a G.D. Ritzy's in St. Petersburg, FL when I was a kid. For some reason, I remember them having shoestring french fries which I thought were really good.

Yep, that'd be them! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm I looooooooved their french fries. I don't know how many stores they had at their pinnacle but it looks like that just plain collapsed. For being a year out from 'restructuring' their website sure doesn't indicate they've had any growth at all.

We must be spoiled. Not only is it 85 degrees here today, we have within 5 miles of our house:

Wienerschnitzel
Shakey's
Del Taco
Taco Bell
Jack in the Box
Fuddruckers
Pizza Hut
Rally's

plus countless others not mentioned in this thread. :)

Well up here in Northern CA, we tend to have the 'Main Chains', at least in my area in Santa Rosa. I seem to remember a Sonic in Cotati, or was it a Rocket Burger? We have In & Out , which is about the only chain store I'll eat at. Great burgs!!!! Hmm, we also have a Juicy Burger downtown.

When I was in Iowa ( the only time) someone took me to a place in Letts or Lettsville to have a 'loose meat sandwich'. Man was that thing good. I've never had another, and don't remember the name of the place either. It was an old hole in the wall type joint similar to an aging DQ or something. They also served fried catfish.

Does anyone know if loose meat sandwiches are still around?

I never heard them called "loose meat" until the Roseanne TV show.

But I did eat many a "Maid Rite" in my youth. (Same thing)

Hey that rings a bell, is that a chain in Iowa? I remember they served Stirzing's potato chips which were also the best I've ever had. It's been since 1988 and would love to get my lips on some o' those chips!!!

Speaking of which, I'm going to walk down the street to one RIGHT NOW to get a Venti Tazo tea lemonade.. It's very warm in L.A. today, and I need a tall, cold beverage.

Not really fast food, but do any of you remember McCrory's general store which also had a dining area? Our local Woolworths also had a dining area. They were similar to your average diner... formica counter with swivel stools and such. But they were cool... and there was a pinball area next to the dining area in McCrory's. I'd get a shake and play "Jack in the Box" pinball for hours. :D

Too bad about Farrell's and Naugles, I used to go to the original Farrell's in Portland when I was a kid, it was a big deal. I liked Naugles from when I was living in Reno.

If you're looking for Taco John's head for the mountain states, there's plenty there. The green sauce is the hottest you can get at a fast food place!

Out here we used to have Rax and Taco Time but no more. Rax was bought by a Japanese guy who immediately changed it to Arby's (yuk) and later closed them down. Arby Beef and Cheddar is no match for Rax's BBC.

I used to like Orange Bowl (best pizza in the mall ;)) but I don't think they still exist. Business Finder has the name but I don't want to pay just to find out...

I think there's still an Orange Bowl in Tyson's Corners mall in VA.

I used to get a dog and soda there every time I went to the "old" Ballston Commons in Arlington. Good times... good times. :)

Posted by: midas

I'm really sorry to hear that Shakey's is no longer what it once was. The pizza was great and the experience was 'different'. I've actually been tempted to drive to Wisconsin to go to the nearest one. Now, I'll scratch that off my list of things to do.

Some of the fanchises listed have never been in the Chicago area. But one that's still around that disappeared from here is Jack-in the Box. Whenever I'd travel to California, the first thing I'd do is stop off and get some of their awful tacos. It's great now that Burger King has virtually the same weird tacos.

Yes, the toppings are definitely different in Japan. Corn is a big one, along with squid.

Akron had a G.D. Ritzy's in the Merriman Valley area, but it's long gone. That's a local graveyard for restaurants... and not just chains. There was also a Rax Roast Beef there (now, long gone). The only major chain left in the Valley is McDonald's.

Former home areas: SW Virginia had plenty of Sonic Drive-Ins and a Fuddruckers. Sacramento has Wienerschnitzels (sp?) all over the place, a Fuddruckers up by Sunrise Mall. It had a few Rally's, too, but they're also long gone. There was a Rally's a fairly short walk from where I lived, but it had closed by the time I got to the area.

The very first Shakey's opened in my town (Sacramento,) in the mid-50s. I remember the same thing you do - going there with my family and listening to Dixieland and jazz. It was great fun, and the pizza was good. It was also a college hangout for my husband. (Yeah, he's older than me.)

The original owner sold his stores in the late-60s and retired rich, and I guess it went way downhill after that. I remember going a few times as an adult, for nostalgia reasons, but being disappointed.

That original Shakey's closed recently and is now a restaurant called East End Grill or something like that. The original sign is now in a museum.

Having grown up on Long Island I remember Weston's, too. But I was pretty young when we went, so I can't really say whether the food was any good. I also remember Farrell's and their Zoo creation. It was a huge troth of ice cream sundae, usually purchased for a kid's birthday party.

For those of you who loved Roy Rogers - there was an article in our local paper a few months back about a couple of guys who bought the Roy Rogers brand name and the rights to all of their old menu items. They expect to open a hundred or more Roy's locations over the next couple of years. If you all remember, Marriott (the hotel chain) owned Roy Rogers/Hardees/Gino's so they were bascially all the same family. Many of the former Roy Rogers locations around here were sold to Boston Market or Wendy's. I worked for Roy's while I was in High School and I always thought the food was the best of all the fast food restaurants. When I worked there, everything was made fresh on the premises. After a while, they brought in pre-cooked roast beef that we would basically heat up by sticking it in the au jus. :p

Places I'd like to see here in Jersey that we do not have:

Steak & Shake
Taco Bueno
In 'n' Out

I wish we had In & Out Burger out here in MA. I've heard such good things...

There's an A&W in the Burlington Mall I think!

I remember Burger Chef too, my grandmother still calls every burger place (mcDonalds, BK, etc.) "Burger Chef". :) She's very cute.

Posted by: LiveBlues

I'd just be happy with fast food places that aren't extinct. The only place here is a McDonalds. The worst of the bunch. I would love to open a Burger King or a KFC/Taco Bell (even though Taco Time is much better). It would make a killing here, plain and simple. Can't get it past the P&Z commission though.

Posted by: gchance

After 6 pages of extinct fast food I'll chime in with some info that I know.

Rax was wonderful, they had probably the best salad bar I had ever been to. They were acquired and promptly ruined by Arby's.

I don't personally remember Burger Chef, however I do remember being told about it. In my little town (Yuba City, CA) we had one back in the 50s & 60s that my dad used to go to. His best friend had a speech imediment and used to call it "Burger Chief", so I grew up with him always laughing about that. The building later became a locally owned chicken place, which later got acquired by the local donut shop of all places. The donut shop was called "Eat & Run Donuts", and when they bought the chicken place, it became "Eat & Run Donuts and Chicken". My friends and I loved the concept and would never buy one or the other, we HAD to buy donuts AND chicken. After it closed, it became "Carbos", a vegetarian place that had nasty food. Now it's "Teriaki House", which it's been for maybe 5 years now. I think they'll be there a while. :)

While they aren't quite the chain they used to be, you still find Fuddruckers around. There's a Fuddruckers in Citrus Heights, CA, on Sunrise Blvd. I think they have ostrich burgers now.

A&W is another one of those chains that simply isn't what it used to be, but again, it's still around. The mall stores are NOT REAL A&W RESTARAUNTS! The root beer is completely different. In the malls they use premade syrup, while at the regular restaraunts they make it right there. When I was a kid there was an A&W in Marysville, CA, but that closed in the late 70s. The last A&W in the Sacramento area that I remember is on Madison.

Does anyone here remember Taco Charley? It was a competitor to Taco Bell back in the late 70s and early 80s, and had far superior food. Pepsico couldn't handle this, of course, promptly acquired them, and turned their restaraunts into Taco Bells. Sad, sad, sad.

Anyway, that's what just spewed out of the recesses of the sorry excuse I call a brain.

Greg

I wish there was a Del Taco in Kansas.... mmmmmm. For that matter I'd like anything but Wendy's/McDonald's/Burger King in Wichita. We had a Taco John's but the location was terrible and they closed down.

I'm on the road in Kansas City/Overland Park right now so I get to enjoy Hardee's. Although I was there for lunch and it took 40 minutes to stand in line and get my food!

Oh well... when I head west to Vegas in June I can taste the real world again.

Posted by: gtrogue

Anybody remember Mighty Casey's? A menu full of ballpark type food. I used to like to go there and get a chili or slaw dog with some onion rings.

Posted by: bsnelson

Ah, the long departed A&W Root Beer "stand". The one in my old home town was kind of like a Sonic Drive-In; they served burgers, fries, hotdogs etc., and that great made-on-site root beer in frosty mugs if you ate there, or in those curious "clip-top" cardboard cups if to go.

I also have fond memories of Shakey's; it was very tasty pizza.

Yes, they do have ostrich burgers. My co-workers and I occasionally have lunch at either the Fuddruckers in downtown Burbank or the one in the Galleria in Sherman Oaks, and one of them usually orders the ostrich.

And the standalone restaurants serve their root beer in an actual frosty mug, unlike the mall stores, at least in my experience. (I've only been to a couple standalones, both in the Chicago suburbs.)

On another note, I know Jack in the Box used to be more widespread than it is now...as my parents tell me, soon after I turned 2, the three of us were in the car and I piped up from the back seat, "That sign says 'Jack in the Box,'" thus announcing that I knew how to read. So they had locations in the Tampa Bay area in late 1976/early 1977.

oh man, the little Tavern - go to the 9:30 club - see a couple of great little known bands. Swing by the little tavern around 2am and buy a bag of burgers for the car. That was good cheap living. I am still scared about what they did to make those burgers taste so good

PS I think the little taverns are still around

Posted by: Inundated

Didn't Hardee's merge with/get acquired by/acquire Carl's Jr.? I seem to recall that Hardee's is now basically Carl's Jr. East, right down to the menus in most cases.

I forgot about Burger Chef. We had one in Cuyahoga Falls (Akron suburb) that is still abandoned today, and it was closed for a few years. I think it turned into a Hardee's, but before the above mentioned changes. It is the oddest drive-through I've ever seen...it's wedged between a big supermarket and a road leading to the freeway. The lot is fenced in and the drive through is a circular road bringing people back around the exit side.

Re: Rax...I'm pretty sure (as posted by someone else) you can't find them anywhere. They're long, long gone. I believe they started out of the Columbus, OH area (home of Wendy's). Arby's, by the way, I believe started in Youngstown, OH...about 40 miles east of my hometown of Akron.

Along the lines of moondoggie's post from yesterday, it is 92 degrees here today and we have the following restaurants very close by:

Whataburger
Rally's
Sonic (4 different locations within 5 miles of my house)
Del Taco
In-N-Out
Jack In The Box
Carl's Jr.
Fuddrucker's
Dairy Queen
Dunkin' Donuts

Someone mentioned Jack In The Box being much more prolific in the 70's. I think they had a bad meat scandal (e-coli or something) that basically wiped them out for a few years. They started back up in SoCal and are now all over in the west. Edit: According to the company website, Jack In The Box merely closed some of their eastern stores to concentrate on the west and southwest markets but I'm almost positive they had some sort of scandal that put them on the ropes for awhile. Edit again: This site had a little less biased history of the company and does mention the E-coli incident.

Yes - they had a pretty bad incident where they were serving undercooked beef. I remember because that's when I was just starting to work in fast food, and they were implementing all sorts of new testing procedures to make sure meat was fully cooked and held at a high enough temperature.

an ecoli out break.. IIRC, it involved the death of an infant.

Since them, some places will only serve a burger cooked well done. No medium-rare.. :(

Jack in the Box, Jack in the Crack as we called them when I was younger, did have an E. Coli problem in the early/mid nineties. From what I remember there were two separate E. Coli incidents and somebody(ies) died. I don't know if the E. Coli contributed to any long term decline though. It did kick off the menu warnings about undercooked meat and some restaurants' policies of not selling undercooked meat.

This was years after they closed their locations in the East...there certainly weren't any Jack in the Boxes in the Tampa Bay area by the time I got old enough to really pay attention to such things (i.e., the early 1980s).

Another fast-food retrenchment that must have happened at some point in the 1980s: I remember Wienerschnitzel being in the Tampa Bay area in the early 1980s, back when it was called Der Wienerschnitzel. (And I can even remember a specific location: on South Dale Mabry, near El Prado Boulevard, across the street from the McDonald's that's been there forever.)

Offhand, I could think of 4 Jack in the Boxes near here. After looking on their web site there are 9 within a reasonable distance, it thinks 15 are near enough to list. Of the burger chains, I'm quite fond of J-i-B. I like their ads as well.

We also have a Dairy Queen, though its branding itself DQ. Its reasonable, not something I go out of my way for.

Others which have been mentioned:

The A&W closed down, its now a Taquaria (is that how you spell it?). A&W served me the worst burger I've ever had in the US, I wouldn't go in one if I could find it.

The Wienerschnitzel closed down. I think its site is going to be redeveloped into offices with fancy restaurants on the ground floor, just like the other 3 corners on that intersection. It was occupying one of the most prime peices of real estate in town. This was another place I wouldn't go out of my way for, but wouldn't avoid.

The Swensons closed down, its now a Cold Stone Creamary and a Quizno's Subs. I liked Swensens, had a very old fashioned sort of air. I reallly, really like Cold Stone though.

We have Shakeys, I think they've catered one or 2 events at work. Quite reasonable, nothing particularly special.

Red Barn is definitely dead. Well, as far as I know, I'm the guy who buried Rax earlier in this thread. ;)

We had Red Barns all over the Akron, OH area. The one I used to go to all the time, on State Road in Cuyahoga Falls, was torn down...and now a bank sits on the site. One old Red Barn in Fairlawn was converted - and massively updated - into the Sprint PCS store for that area.

How does Golden Corral fall under the extinct fast food thread? We just had one open here 2 years ago.

Although our Kenny Rogers Roasters disappeared about 5 years ago they are still around:

I loved their corn muffins.

We got LOTS of Sonics though

There are still many Artic Circle's in Utah. I didn't realize there were ever any outside of Utah.

As has been mentioned many times in this thread, Whataburger is alive and well, just concentrated mostly in Texas and the Southwest.

There are Golden Corrals both in my hometown of Akron, OH, and my former home area of SW Virginia. I suspect they're another one who has been concentrating on regional areas, and Nevada just wasn't in their plans.

They seem to mostly be in the southern and eastern U.S.

Yeah, I saw an Arctic Circle a few weeks ago in St George... I don't know if it had anything to do with the A/C's that were here years ago or not. ????

I kinda dont' think they are connected, but who knows ... ??

THe Artic Circle in St. George has the same menu items as the others in the Wasatch Front part of Utah (my wife loves the lime rickey and I love the fry sauce). Like I said, I didn't know there were ever any outside of Utah so if you did have some in Vegas, I don't know if they were connected or not.

Well, you just said the magic words that makes me think they ARE connected....

FRY SAUCE!!! :D

That was the main thing we woud go for when we were kids, was a big order of frys, with "Arctic Sauce" YUM---my!

Of course, their greasy burgers and shakes were great too :)

IIRC the ones around here were actually "Groft's Arctic circle "

Oh, I just thought of another extict joint... "The Food Factory " !!

I used to LOVE the "Factory Cheeseburger " ..

(I'm getting hungry)...

Still based in Salt Lake City, Arctic Circle’s operations currently span eight states throughout the west with 83 stores, including 57 franchises and 26 company-owned stores, Arctic Circle Restaurants dot the maps of Utah, Idaho, California, Montana, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming and Nebraska.

A snippet from the story ARCTIC CIRCLE RESTAURANTS

So it looks as if the early Vegas ones WERE connected ...
