The Shield 3/9 - "Playing Tight" - SPOILERS!

Wow.
A great premeire, with a few shaky plotlines. I'm hoping those get stabilized as the season moves on. But on the whole, I'm fully satisfied... so glad this show is back.
A few quick observations....
Wow, Julian sure healed fast. From what I could tell, there didn't seem to be much of a gap of "time" between the season 2 finale and the season 3 premeire... shouldn't he at least have bruises, or scars?
Danny sure got the short end of the stick. No more than 90 seconds on the screen this episode.
The whole Acaveda/Claudette thread feels a bit cheap to me. "Oh, I was leaving... now I'm not"... c'mon, we're intelligent viewers, give us a better explanation than this. It's thin.
The Strike Team / Money Train / Armenian Mob Guy thread, however, was great. It was one thing having Dutch on the case, but to bring in the US Treasury, only to find out that some of the bills are marked.... now THAT is great. We knew they'd have the heat on them after the money train hit, but now it's going to be coming from all angles.
Can't wait to see how this season unfolds... looks like it'll be full of surprises. Just from the trailer for this season (spoilerizing, since some people don't like watching the previews)
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
The Strike Team sure seems to revert back to their shady ways a bit quickly, don't they?

Oh crap... forgot this was on tonight and I'm 180 miles from my TiVo's. <covering my eyes to hide the spoilers> I'll have to grab a replay.
Posted by: zaknafein
Don't worry, there are several through out the week.
I loved it. I agree the Aceveda thing doesn't make sense, but this money train thing is really going to be interesting.

Yeah... I set up to record it on Friday night via TCO. It'll be waiting for me when I get home Saturday.

Two great quotes from tonight:
Aceveda: "It means that you have to file the proper paperwork and wait a couple days for the hundred grand, or you can stop by an ATM."
Dutch: "The guy's wanted by Interpol, I'm giving you the address, all you have to do is pick him up. What's so goddamn hard about that?! If my tone sounds superior its because I'm American and you're Greek!"
Posted by: zaknafein
Oh, and for anyone catching the reruns, you might want to pad. The 9PM showing tonight ran long by about 2 minutes. The 10PM showing went long by a whole six minutes. (since it was already pushed back by the first showing)

I don't have an issue with Aceveda staying on, it appeared to me that he now wants to stay and nail Vic for the money train. He knows Vic is involved somehow...
I will put into spoiler tags what I think will happen. Anyone that replies to my guess, please spoiler tag it...
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Vic will borrow the buy money from the retirement fund and the Mexican gang will get busted with the marked money and the Strike Team will be cleared of it.

Son of a......This is the first Shield Episode I have watched where it ran long. GGRRRRR!
Someone has gotta fill me on on the rest of the episode. What happens after Julian broke that guys arm? That is where mine cut off.

Absolutely.
And that's why he wouldn't authorize the money--he's trying to force Vic to cross the line, to make it easier to catch him. And it seems to be working...
I couldn't figure out how much time is supposed to have passed since last season...it seemed to have been a while, but it couldn't have been TOO long, since it's still six months to the election.

That's where mine cut off too. Luckily, I was watching pretty close to live, so I was able to catch the end of the 10PM show.
The lead out music starts to play just after that scene. We see Kern and his crew do a dirve-by on the Mexcian gang. Then, you see Shane at the car dealership, presumably buying his gf the car anyway. Then, (and most interestingly) we see a shot of Vic making an early withdrawl from the money train funds.

That's definitely a possibility. That would seem to wrap up this storyline fairly quickly, but I think there were many hints in the opener at just how complicated the storyline could get. We see hints of Shane using the money for a car, Vic using the money to help his family, Vic using the money to fund the Mexican gun deal, Acevedo staying on for 6 months to presumably nail Vic, the US Treasury coming into play, Dutch being told to keep the case quiet to Vic but having a hard time doing that.

So friggin' awesome. I love how this show often doesn't have a commercial break until halfway in. I'm glad I watched live due to the overrun, though the overrun certainly wasn't caused by commercials! They easily had 50 minutes of content last night.
Vic is always one step ahead of Aceveda. It's pretty clear Aceveda suspects Vic's involvement with the money train, but not clear at all how? Dutch certainly got a much bigger tip than Aceveda when the Armenian recognized Lem. You could see Vic piecing together in his head the "sting" forming around him in the barn.
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
You're either right - he'll plant the money with the Mexicans, or another gang, or even Kern if he remains such an ingrate. This assumes that someone on the strike team figures out the money is marked. Or he'll use the money like ekims said and they'll get very very lucky. It could make for very interesting TV if the strike team has to resign themselves to the fact that they'll never ever be able to use that money.
There have been many times where it seemed like the Strike Team had no way out but pulled some miracle "on the river." Like getting Armadillo killed, planting and flushing the keys of coke Julian saw them take, etc.
Skittles, I agree Aceveda staying on is a bit contrived. However, it's been his objective since the Pilot to take down Mackey for political gain so I'll have to go back and watch this episode closely and look for that "epiphany" moment that made him realize he finally had a chance to do so.

I totally agree. Not having a commercial break for 25+ minutes into the show really helps me get into the show. You get plenty of time to focus on the plot and the characters before being jarred back to reality.
And was it just my lack of attention, or were there NO banner bars at all last night during the show? If so, then FX has majorly improved their stock in my book.

See, I figured there was *something* I missed where Aceveda suddenly realizes that he's got to stay, because the only thing that would keep him in the Barn as the Captain would be the possibility of being linked to Vic in some crime or scandal (because that would, in turn, get him booted from the City Council seat).
So, I watched it again during the late show. Like you, I was looking for the epiphany moment, but the only real inkling they give you that he's caught on to Vic's game is the comment he makes to Vic about making an ATM withdrawal. Still, how would he know Vic was involved?
I suspect a lot more on the Aceveda situation will come to light in the passing weeks. Still, it's a shame, because I was seriously hoping to see Claudette in the Seat of Power.
Posted by: TampaThunder
Doesn't anybody think that the master list of marked bills in Aceveda's office will come into play? That list in Vic's hands would render the marked bills a non-issue.

I thought at one time someone said it's been 3 months since they robbed the money train.

as for Acaveda staying, i thought it was to take more credit of cleaning up his district to help his 'reputation' by stealing Claudette's idea. Which is why she was so pissed. but the whole 'atm' comment does make you think, unless he just made that with the assumption that Vic has a stash of cash from several years of helping drug dealers.
edited to correct some spelling.. damn laptop keys :)

No banner bars. I didn't notice either which is exactly how it should be. Good for FX!
There was another inkling -- when he explicitly told Dutch not to include Mackey in the investigation, right after he asked for the master marked bill list. (Tampa, yes - if the strike team gets the list, it will become a non-issue as they can get the bills out of the stash -- what a pain though. This show rarely if ever makes anything a "non-issue" though, and it will be more interesting to see if the strike team can keep it together after finding out their money is marked and NOT having the list)
Maybe it's just that the Strike Team was being SO squeaky clean that they became TOO conspicuous to Aceveda?
Love. This. Show.

I would assume that there is more than one copy of the list. But then again they did make a point of showing who would be in possession of it, so maybe there is only one copy.

Other thoughts....
My favorite scenes came toward the end:
The "ATM" line was great and the look on Vic's face right after....
I love when Vic takes moral superiority over a perp. "You steal guns from our soldiers and sell them to gangbangers?......Time for a little run & gun.....[Holds gun to perp's head]....Start running.........Run........RUN...."
Shane is definitely showing more spine to Vic. From what he said to him after the bust, to buying the car (which I took as more of an "FUVic" than him using the Money Train $$$).

I didn't notice any either. FX must know this is their big money maker, and are trating it well.

I set the 10pm show to pad for 5 minutes (after watching the 9pm show and realizing that it ran over).
So now you're telling me that the 10pm show runs over even more so that I'll still miss the last minute with a 5 minute pad.

For a few months I forgot why I thought the Shield was the best show on TV. Last night, I remembered why. This show did an excellent job of picking up right where they left off. They didn't need to make up lame stories about shifting around cast members or anything silly like that. The loose ends from many of last season's Shield Episodes (ie. Money Train, Jesus look-alike Armenian who escaped custody, Julian's beating... etc. ) are all addressed in the first episode and yet there is more!
Cannot wait till next Tuesday!
Posted by: Groucho
"Jesus" is actually a reference back to Season 1.

Cletus Van Damme...LOL. Came back to haunt them.
Also, when did Mackey get in so tight with his family again? I thought she was still pissed at him?
Acevedo staying was fine with me (he's a great character), but they should have come up with a reason, contrived or not.
Off-topic Tivo Newbie question: If I create a Season Pass for the Shield, will it record both the Tuesday and the Friday episodes if I ask it to only keep one? That is, does it record every Tues at 10? Or does it overwrite with every rerun of that same episode? Thanks.

It will only record a single episode. Barring conflicts, it will record the first showing on Tuesay, and ignore all others. Search for 28 day rule for more info.

It is great to have this show back on, though it pissed me off when my TiVo cut short. Oh well, I saw what I missed on the encore. :) , A lot of stuff happened last night, I agree with everyone else that the ATM line was great. I'm still not quite sure that I agree that Aceveda has the the Money Train thing figured out but I guess we'll find out soon.
Claudette is pissed! she is going to come back somehow someway later on. It does appear as though Shane and Vic are going to come to head sometime later on this season, I think that G/F of Shane's may do it. What is Vic doing with the money at the end? and did you all get the impression him and his wife are back together?

Grrrrrrrrr.
My recording cut off when the fed said Greece wouldn't help.
Can someone fill me in to the point where some guy is walking down a stairwell while the music is playing?

Actually, I believe he didn't give her the money for the down payment on the car. That's why she was pissed when they were walking out of the dealership. She was telling him that she needed something better than her old crappy Neon in order to present an image of a successful real estate agent.

That was true earlier in the show, but at the very end, as the final song was playing, Shane was in the dealership with his girlfriend buying the car.
Best show on TV! :D

The second show went into a commercial after Julian choked the ex-cop and then showed Vic taking money out to the storage shed. I caught the "deleted" scenes from the earlier show. It also looked like some obscenities were muted during the episode. Any idea why FX edited the second show?
Posted by: rgr
Great episode!
My guesses:
Vic will use the money for the gun buy, but the drive-by at the very end of the ep will give him another day or two and he'll swap the money with the city's money and it'll look like the tracked money has been in the city vaults all along.
Claudette isn't done. Rememeber her idea of bringing in the Under Cover Squad? Well, they'll come in and the head of that group will know it was Claudette that arranged the transfer and start making her look good. Or they'll blame Aceveda for the move and work with Claudette anyway as payback for moving to a worse precinct.
The head of the under cover squad is probably buddies with Vic and will be his pipeline for information.
Shane will have used his own money to buy the car.
We should start some sort of a pool.

I think Aceveda heard the Armenian snitch tell Dutch that the Money Train was robbed by four masked gunmen, and Aceveda put two and two together. Four gunmen... four strike team members that like to commit crimes for personal gain... <light bulb>

You also have to go back to last season when the Armenian mob was busted and the Strike team got a list of "sites". Aceveda took all but the last one, because Vic said he would check it out. So, Aceveda has a hint that they may be linked.

I finally had the time to sit down and watch this episode last night, and the same thing happened to me, the ending cut off after the scene of Julian beating up the guy! At least now I know to pad the time. I'll assume this is how it's going to be from now on? Good start to a new season, lots of continued energy in this episode from the major players. And I love the bit where Vic's son runs right by him saying "Bye Daddy," and you see Vic's face go through so many emotions. He is so great in this role!

I'm guessing not, although of course I'm padding my Season Pass as well! But they had a VERY long "previously on" segment, which I think might have thrown the timeslot out of whack...

This show never fails to completely thrill me. But the best line was when Vic and Shane were listening in on the rapper getting his b@lls busted by his GF, and Shane was commenting on how whipped the guy was. Vic: "Pretty soon he'll be buying her a car". Rewound and played three times.
Posted by: DanT
My only problem with this show is the carelessness the team shows when talking amongst themselves. If you were already suspected of criminal activities and pulled off a score that big, would you talk about in your car and office? The places that are most likely to be bugged? They're not even talking in code.
Still a great show, though.

FINALLY got a chance to watch...great that a new ep is on tonight.
Besides the ATM quote...I loved it when Vic says the phone tap conversation will probably be in code.
And when the call comes he basically says " I got the guns, Ill be there in 30 minutes.." or something along those lines...and he says "I think I broke the code"
Just started watching The Shield so names of characters escape me but you get the idea.
Vic has an idea about the money.....he'll do some work and find out what.
