OT: New Satellite

I know this is completely off topic, but I was wondering if anyone had any idea on the new DirecTV satellite (7S is it?) that was supposed to be up this month.

It's carrying my locals on it and I am waiting for this to happen before I think about the new HD TiVo.

Thanks
Casey

Launch scheduled for May 2nd.

Launch date has just been announced as May 2.

What sort of ideas do you want?

;)

It shipped to the launch center very recently. That's about the only updated news. Figure end-of-April launch, mid-May-at-earliest in use.

Edit: well, good... May 2nd, I see. ;) I was close.

Well, thanks all, I guess that give me a little more time to save up for the HD TiVo.

Now... just 2-3 more months of suffereing through cable and a VCR.

Does anyone remember how to make the clock stop blinking?

Unplug it.

Ah, but then I wouldn't be able to record programs for my prego wife.

That would be a BAD thing.

How about putting a thick electric tape over it? :p

Do you still have the manual for the VCR? You could read it. :D

What's this "manual" that you speak of? :)

Its a 500 page book to try to help you figure out how to use the contraption. It probably won't work though, as VCRs are impossible (except for linux geeks) to program, and once you've programed it, it usually doesn't work anyway. :D:D:D

Ok, I found it. It says (and I quote):

"To change the time on the display of the VCR, set the time in the MENU"

Ok... easy enough... So how do I get to the menu?

"When wanting to get into the menu, press the MENU key"

Ok... that should have been self-explanatory but...

"You can not change the time on the display of the VCR using the MENU"

/me sighs, loads and fires...

Was the duct tape for the vcr or the wife?

:D LOL :D Whats 7s going to fo anyway? HDTV locals??? Kinda a waste, locals all locals, but some people are very lazy. People would like it if D* added local FM stations to the music chioce lineup...

DirecTV 7S will be used to serve about 60 local markets, including about 40 new ones. The others are local markets served using 101°'s national transponders, which will move to DirecTV 7S. The freed up space will be used for new services, likely to include more HD channels.

HD local channels aren't being provided yet (except for owned-and-operated markets with CBS and Fox). The latest word is that DirecTV is exploring the use of the SpaceWay satellites to provide local HD channels for as much as 100% of the US. But the first SpaceWay satellite doesn't launch until later this year, so it's purely conjecture right now if it'll work and if they'll eventually do this.

It has nothing to do with lazyness and everything to do with convenience. Those of us with Directivos can't wait for the day that we will be able to record our locals!

And ditch cable. Wasn't that the point of satellite in the first place?

Also, 7S is going to the slot at 119. At this slot D* only has the use of 10 transponders, so using it for CONUS transponders would kind of be a waste. But D* can use the 10 transponders over and over again with the use of spotbeams. And as dswallow said, this will free up CONUS space on the bird at 101 that is currently being used for LIL.

As for what D* plans to do with this extra bandwidth, I would expect to see the addition of the previousely announced Fox ED/HD and maybe Starz HD and MaxHD. I would also like to see the compression eased up a bit and get the PQ back to what it used to be. New shopping channels would not be a surprise either.

Oh, 119 to get around the need for a new dish... locals are good only for people with DTiVos, but HD locals have no point b/c the HDTiVo has an encoder. I think the DiTiVo should have a USB digital external tuner for $99. that would be the end of locals....

The DirecTV HD DVR doesn't have any encoders.

The HD locals can be recorded because the signal is digitally transmitted as encoded, so it's just recording what it receives over-the-air, exactly the same way DirecTV signals are recorded.

Posted by: MichaelK

also there are plenty of people who will not be able to get locals OTA easily.

And besides that group a whole other group that would rather just pay 5$ a month rather than spend $100 and the effort to put up an antenna.

Michael: DirecTV >>has<< to carry the HD locals on satellite at some point for the reasons you describe.

exactly
