JAG "What If" 3/12/04 Spoilers!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Graymalkin

Not too many threads here about JAG, but I'm too lazy to turn the channel after "Joan of Arcadia" (:D), so...

What the (bleep) was this? Did Donald Bellisario overdose on Marvel Comics's "What If?" series? Did he want to give the "shippers" (those fans who obsess over the characters' romantic relationships) some momentary satisfaction?

Was that entire trial a homage (or rip-off) of the Spencer Tracy-Katherine Hepburn movie, "Adam's Rib"? It's been so long since I've seen that movie that I can't be sure, but it sure sounded like it. And the ending, with the train ticket blowing away -- that's a steal from some classic 40s movie that I can't remember, either.

Jennifer as the Catwoman? Hmm. No. Catherine Bell would be a better Catwoman.

I've decided that I don't like Mac with long hair. Or trading Hollywood romantic comedy-style quips like Kate Hepburn. That's not her.

Worst JAG ever.

Okay, maybe there was worse , but I definitely thought this one sucked. It was like they ran out of ideas so let's throw out the story lines and live in an alternative universe.

Only thing I saw from it, I think the Admiral is going to give his cheating fiancee another chance. The Harm/Mac sexual tension got another log on the fire.

This whole dinner was a celebration for Coates promotion I think, but she's still a Petty Officer so I don't think Harm can 'go there' yet ;)

Posted by: Graymalkin

Who was the lady admiral in charge of JAG in that alternate universe?

And shouldn't they all have had goatees? :D

Posted by: njtaz

That lady JAG used to be in charge before. She was in the first couple of seasons.

All in all this was one of the worst episodes. I could barely watch the whole episode.

Well I'm not quite sure about her being "in charge" before .. but she has definitely been in several episodes throughout the years.

The actress is Andrea Thompson and most recently would have been seen in the current season of "24" where she played a doctor who had scenes dealing with quarentines and stuff .. (trying not to divulge plot for those who would want to pick up the season later) .

Other notable things she has been in ..

Babylon5 - Talia Winters (Telepath)
NYPD Blue - Det. Jill Kirkendall (Partner to Kim Delaney's character)

She left Blue for an anchor role on CNN's Headline News.

Yeah she may not have been totally in charge, but she was a commander when Rabb was a Lieutenant and she was the one I believe giving out assignments.

This is the worst JAG I have seen since I have been watching. I had to make myself finish watching it and I was glad when it was over.

That was Andrea Thompson? Damn. She seems to have aged 20 years since filming those "24" episodes last year.

Strange episode...

The other movie that someone was probably thinking of:

His Girl Friday (1940)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0032599/
Plot Outline: A newspaper editor uses every trick in the book to keep his ace reporter ex-wife from remarrying.
Stars: Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, and a young Ralph Bellamy

Later remade:
Switching Channels (1988)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096203/
Stars: Kathleen Turner, Burt Reynolds, Christopher Reeve, Ned Beatty

Personally I saw more of the resemblance to those flicks than the Treacy/Hepburn one, though for some reason I was thinking that the original film was a Treacy/Hepburn one (I mixed that up with Cary Grant, Ralph Bellamy, etc.)

I tend to disagree. While it's not the usual serious episode, I found it an interesting departure from the usual. Sure there weren't any utterly serious courtroom scenes or investigations (or flying), but sometimes a brief break is warranted.

The timing could be more in line with an April 1 showing, but all in all, it was quite a lighthearted episode. I was laughing quite a bit - it was a heck of a funny episode (especially if take their normal characters and get it all twisted around. The premise was weak though, but entertaining. Plus it does absolutely nothing to the storyline, as well as nothing for the Mac-Harm relationship. It was a way better way to break out rather than a clip show.

Of course, I don't wish it to happen very often, but a change made it definitely fun, if not lighthearted.

I liked Mac with long hair. The short haircut doesn't do it for me.

I got sick of the aquarium transition after the first time.

No way is Chegwidden getting back together with Meredith. It was nice to see her character again, though.

I thought it was a fun episode, but definitely not one of the best. I think better diversion episodes have been some of the Christmas role-playing episodes -- there was one where the "Harriet" actress played Phyllis Diller doing a USO gig on Harm's father's carrier. That one was good.

I've only recently come back to this show, perhaps just since this season, or toward the end of last year.

But I liked this one. Might just have been my mood.

Kind of reminds me of the eppy they did a few years ago where everyone was switched around.. They were stationed on a hospital ship in the 40's or something like that...

Those are fun every now and then, I guess..

Better than no episode at all... Barely !

Yeah, I got to go along with that she looked good. But that was the only good thing about it.

The whole thing was ridiculous to me. The moment I read the description I turned to my wife and said, "Oh oh, this was going to be lame."

Definitly one they wouldn't show during sweeps.

Yeah but JAG is supposed to be "reality" based show... no aliens or sci fi... its ok if its someone's dream but then if its like an alternate universe star trek episode then its really lame.

I thought of that, too. I like these episodes out of left field every now and then. I believe there was also a holiday episode with the whole let's mix everybody up theme. I like them as a once a season diversion. It is still just TV, so why not?

And I'll take Petty Officer Coates over Mac any day. She is spectacular, even in uniform, let alone a black dress.

I haven't seen this ep yet, but JAG usually does at least one fantasy ep per season.

It was a Christmas oriented episode, wasn't it? USO Tour or something like that?

The USO Tour was in 'Ghosts of Christmas Past' and was timewise in the Vietnam war with Harm playing his father. The Navy hospital ship was in WWII and was in the episode 'Each Of Us Angels'

Weird episode....

Posted by: tgr131

I've finally seen it. It was weird, but PO Coates was HOT in the "catwoman" black dress. I thought she was cute, but I didn't realize she was drop-dead gorgeous!

I've seen her looking good a couple of times on JAG. Amazing how well they look with the uniform off. Oh, I mean in civies:) .

Posted by: Graymalkin

It's obvious that Jennifer (PO Coates) has a crush on Harm, and I wonder if the writers are going to go anywhere with that.

The actress who plays her is Zoe McLellan. There's a fan site, of course:

I don't get that. She's grateful for his roll in straightening her out, but I don't see the crush.

I didn't mind the episode. I find their fantasy episodes entertaining. It was interesting the way they brough some characters back. I kept expecting others to show up as well, but then you'd need more time to introduce them in some form or another.

I still think I would like to have seen Harm's brother and Lt. Singer together in this episode. Because Bud leaving JAG would mean that he never went to Afghanistan, never got his leg blown off and the Singer storyline might have been a bit different.

Was the guy who was Coates' accomplice for the theft Bud's dad? I thought so at first, but then I wasn't so sure. It would fit his character...

That was Larry Manetti, who's most famous for "Magnum P.I." Bud's dad is played by Jeff Mackay.

Posted by: markan10

I would have liked it better if it really was a "What if..." scenario. I was expecting a scenario that described what really would have happened if Harm and Mac hooked up after Sydney. There were just too many off the wall things going on...

In short, I hated it.

Posted by: HTH

I almost missed it entirely because KOLN/KGIN was running boys basketball instead (so were the PBS stations across the frelling state!).

Time to start setting up redundant Season Passes off the Omaha CBS station. (Though that doesn't help when it slips its schedule as well!)

I knew she was, and was finally glad to have them show her in something other than her uniform and her hair in a bun. We've seen Mac like that lots of times in "non-fantasy" episodes, wish they'd have Coates like that more often.

There's no way we'll ever see anything between Coates and Mac, I know this show isn't perfectly realistic military-wise, but it would be way out of character for Harm to fraternize with a female enlisted person.

This was certainly not the best episode, even of the fantasy ones, but one thing I really liked was the self-deprecating humor of the courtroom scenes. Meaning the way they overplayed the double-entendre arguments between Mac and Harm that they do (much more subtly) in nearly every episode.

Freudian slip??

I guess I was subconsciously thinking of my own "fantasy episode." ;)

Reunited from their "Black Sheep Squadron" Days.

Posted by: Jon J

Mackay was also featured on Magnum quite often.

Posted by: Graymalkin

Well, this IS a Bellisario production, just like Magnum and Baa Baa Black Sheep, so the alumni are going to show up.

Now if they could get Magnum himself (who went back into Naval Intelligence, remember?) on the show... It's not like Tom Selleck has a whole lot of other stuff going on!

Or Sam Beckett from Quantum Leap, once they cancel Enterprise and Scott Bakula has some downtime. Hey, Al's already there!

Posted by: tgr131

That would be cool to see Magnum back in Naval Intelligence on JAG. I love the "shows in the same universe" discussions in the break room.

Posted by: Jon J

Admiral Thomas Magnum - has an interesting ring to it. ;)

Posted by: hckylvr88

Mackay showed up in the USO tour fantasy episode a few years back. And I have seen him in one or two other episodes besides this one. I just can't remember which ones.
