Tivo and local channel ?'s

I was looking at upgrading to a SDDVR40 since you can pick them up for 100.00. My question is this I live in a very rural area in IL. There is no such thing as local channels the closest station is 45 miles away. I had to lie to directv to get the chicago locals. Since you pay for this service I don't deem it stealing of any kind. Will the tivo calling out mess this up for me? Since directv thinks my reciever is in another town that qualifies for the locals. Will my telephone # give me away? I know I can't be the only one doing this. I mean they can't honestly think I would drive to chicago cause there is a sale on mt. dew! Besides in my situation it makes no sense at all since the ads I see anyway are for stores 45 miles away.

It might, if you are not legitimately within that DMA.

The way the SHVIA works (the point of it anyway), is that you will not see the advertisments that buisnesses in your area paid good money to your "local" station, so you would hopefully see them. You getting other locals, is essentially stealing from that local affiliate, and if you really think about it, the local advertisers too.

Everything I've read here and in other forums suggests that DirecTV does not try to correlate phone numbers to service locations, so you probably have nothing to worry about.

That may be the legal jist of it. Violating the local market's copyrights, by viewing their footage in a market not permitted by them.

But you didn pose the issue of "really thinking about it"

I propose that watching another market is no more stealing (from the advertisers) than going online and reading the los angeles times from out of market. It is info that should be freely available.
I am not stealing from the LA advertisers (or my local ones) by reading the paper.

I work in the broadcast industry so I know the legal and I can forsee the rebuttal,
Yes, The LA times ALLOWS other markets to view their content, copyright includes
allowing or disallowing audiences by geographic location (I.e DVD regions)

I just propose that that it is copyright law that will soon be very messy as media goes national
Broadcast media needs to be accessible to all.

I agree with Ibex since there is no such thing as local advertiser's in my area at least on tv. The closest tv stations are 45 to 60 miles away. So the channels I am not seeing by doing this are not my area merchants so they aren't out any advertising $'s. The advertiser's in my area rely on radio and the local papers. There are two modest sized towns within 15 miles pop. 14,000-18,000. Not big enough for tv stations but large enough for papers. So really the only ads I am missing are ones from businesses that are an hour away. That is my point I don't want to mess up my local reception. I am paying for it and I think everyone should have the right to high quality reception. To get a comparable signal I would need the largest off air antenna availible. Like the one from radio shack. But here is the problem its 13' long and would require a tower around $1000.00. Not an option. Having to shell out that kind of scratch so I can get a good picture is ludicrous, to me anyway. litzdog911 thanks for the advice. I think I will take my chances and get the tivo unit.

You have a Tivo... it's not like you watch the ads anyway.
