Tempted to wait for Stargate Atlantis DVD
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm thinking about starting a new habit: watching new shows only on DVD. Stargate Atlantis is going to premier this summer, and I'm thinking about not watching it, even though I'm a big Stargate: SG-1 fan. Sure, it'll be a couple years before the DVD is out, assuming it will ever come out, but if I start doing this now, in a few years I'll be watching all my shows on DVD.
What do you all think?

You don't really think you can miss SG-Atlantis, do you? :D
I am a big Fan myself, watching SG-1 regularly and still collect the DVD's.
They come in handy to watch when they have a break between Seasons.
Besides...There should be hints on the Season-finale that will lead to SG-Atlantis.
All in all it will be interesting to follow the new Series and still follow Season 8 of SG-1.
I'm sure to be watching...and then tell you how it was...( kidding)
:)

If a series doesn't go beyond one season (and even if it does), there's no guarantee that it will even make it to DVD. It would have to be part of a franchise (Star Trek, but no animated series on DVD yet), have a gimmick (24), or just be special in some way (Dilbert).
For example, Odyssey 5 had unaired episodes and it's still not on DVD. People (including me) are still hungry for Max Headroom to be out on DVD.
The first-run ratings are important. Be a part of the market share.

You didn't state your motivation for doing this. On the surface it makes no sense to me at all.

record on tivo, burn to dvd yourself...perfectly legal and sane
maybe now's a great time for the dvd recorder you always wanted...I'm more than 50% though the original stargate and next week the original star trek has over 20 eps so I should have that in no time. While I'm sure there are great extras on the dvds, I'm not too interested.
Just my 2 cents.

I will watch it this summer because I feel that this series has a good chance of having less than a full season of episodes for the entire series. If that is the case, it might be a while before it comes out on DVD (should anyone care that it does).

This is all well and good (I do just that with many shows), except that SG-1 (and presumably Atlantis) on DVD is anamorphic 16:9 and Dolby Digital 5.1.
It's just not quite that quality coming from Sci-Fi. :(

So to a non hardware updated techno geek like me, how does that translate on my 7 yr old 46 inch 4:3 screen and my 10 yr old receiver with dolby who knows what?
In other words, without the proper equipment, I doubt I'd notice much difference right?

Amen to that. I used to watch Stargate when it was on Showtime in high definition with full Dolby Digital surround sound. Even though the first few seasons were shot in 16mm (35mm for special effects scenes), the 16:9 results looked pretty darn good. When it moved over to SciFi, I ended up with less-than-perfect analog cable reception of letterboxed 4:3 with Dobly Pro-Logic psuedo-surround. I can "zoom" the picture to fill the screen, but that essentially magnifies the video noise from the cable reception. I've bought all six seasons on DVD so far and the episodes look almost as good as they did in HD and the sound is great. It's nearly painful to watch a few episodes on DVD then watch the latest episode on SciFi over cable. If I wasn't so eager to find out what's going to happen next, I'd skip Stargate: SG1 on TV altogether and just buy the episodes on DVD for "first time" viewing. I can understand why it'd be tempting to do that for "Stargate: Atlantis", but it's entirely possible (as has been pointed out in other messages) that the show might not be a success and might not make it to DVD. It could turn out to be the next "My Mother the Car".
