I thought this was a great episode.
So, what happens now with Beth and J.J. now that Beth is pregnant?
Meg seemed more her old self this week, and not so whiny. I also like the Roxanne and Luke relationship.
I can't wait till next week!

Maybe Meg is being set up to be a 60's flower child? Her taking a stand against the war, as well as the introduction of drugs into the storyline seem to indicate something like this could happen.
Beth needs to let JJ know about the baby before he signs on for a second tour (he hasn't already, has he?). I would think that this would certainly influence his decision.
It's a great show and each episode keeps getting more interesting.

This is one of my favorite shows!
I think the Beth storyline is heading towards an abortion decision. :( I hope not, I'd hate to see this show become politicized to our current sensibilities rather than the ones they had back then. My hope for the show is JJ comes home and marries her, but I fear that won't happen.
I'm curious as to what Roxanne will do in her choice between Luke and her ex-boyfriend. Luke seems to be saying that she can go have her fling and he'll wait - which didn't seem characteristic for him.
Meg has always been a bit of a rebel, hidden in the sweet girl facade. Hopefully she'll continue to show strength of character and resist the drug livestyle and continue to channel her ambition into the newsroom and activism.
I am also very interested in the Jack and his partner storyline. They seem like they could be good friends without that racial barrier.
I was the Patty's age or a bit younger back during that time, so I am familiar with the era. I have to say though, that living in California there was none of that racial stuff. My best friend when I was that age was black and we did everything together without question or issues. I was a bit surprised to see the girl have that trouble at the pool. While most of these things gibe with my memories of the time, this one did not.

My wife and I were contemporaries of the older kids in this show. Gerat show with STRONG characters. I love the male leads, Henry & Mr P. Let's hope 2004 era PC sensibilities re:abortion don't screw this up.

Glad to see there are others enjoying this show! American Dreams is just the beginning of a great Sunday night lineup in my family: followed by The Sopranos, and starting this weekend Deadwood (we'll see if that one caps off the evening in style or in disgust...we'll see...).

This was a good episode, I didn't see the pregnancy thing coming at all (then again I don't always see a lot of things coming). I also didn't see the gay thing coming with the new guy at her office, but I wasn't surprised there was something more to that, since we've already been there and done that with a man flirting with Mrs. P.
I have a feeling that the racial issue with Jack will come to a head at some point. He's obviously not a racist, but thinking back to the time when Sam walked Meg home that night last season, he does seem to accept certain aspects of the status quo. I could see this theme building to a point where Jack has to take a stand, most likely having to do with Henry.
I don't know if JJ had extended his tour yet. He obviously was just thinking about it when they were in Hawaii, but about a month, probably a little more, had passed by the end of the show, so he could have by then. If he hasn't yet, I could see a baby, particularly since it would be born out of wedlock, could possibly change his mind. Speaking of the time frame, they've really gone pretty far ahead, last week was obviously some time in June with Sam's graduation, now it's at least August (a month after July 4th).
Oh and why wasn't Henry's girflfriend with them on the 4th of July?

What's the status of Sam and college?? I recall an epsiode where he was trying to decide between Penn and some "black" schools Nathan was suggesting. One week, it's winter/early spring.. The next, Sam is graduating high school (June), the week afterm its the middle of the summer. (July 4th). What's his plan? Did he pick Penn? That's an easy way to keep him in Philadelphia (I don't recall the other schools Nathan was talkingabout). And very little interaction, if any, between Meg and Sam.. What gives? We can't even see her being happy for Sam for graduating high school?

I'm pretty certain he chose Penn, I don't even think he said anything out loud, it was just obvious that his father had convinced him how good of an opportunity the Ivy League school would be. I don't remember if the incident with Drew and the other Penn kids volunteering at the playground or whatever that was influenced his decision or not. Plus as you said, that would obviously keep him in Philadelphia.
The other school was Howard, in D.C. And yes, the Meg/Sam thing has always been inconsistent, but didn't he have some graduation gift from Meg? Or am I confusing that with something else?

Sam did get a graduation gift from meg, some signed record that Henry's lady friend asked asked. And he is going to penn. At the end of the episode debating it, he was seen with his father happy. I think he also said he was going to penn. I forget. But he did choose Penn. Weren't Meg and Sam in the same year, or is Sam a year or 2 older?

He set off my gaydar as soon as they introduced the character. :) Something about the way he was acting, and then the over the top hitting on Helen.

That's right, the record, thanks.
Meg had her 16th birthday party in last season's finale, which took place on and around Father's Day. I think that almost certainly puts her in 10th grade (then, so 11th now). I think I did always assume she and Sam were in the same year, but obviously not.

OK.. I guess we didn't see her giving it to him.

Sam did choose Penn, I think due to their track team.
Anyone think Jack is going to run for city council? He is a good candidate.

The abortion thing would fit in the time frame. Remember well-off parents could get one for their child. Abortion was legalized in California in the 60's and will stay legal no matter what the Supreme Court decides about Roe v. Wade. (Unless Federal Law bans it.)
