If an old cdr no longer worked - for whatever reason. Is there any way of recovering the data on it?

It's an old backup of some files I am trying to recover, but when I read the CDR is's saying there's nothing on it !!?!!!?

Dunno. Some sort of byte-for-byte copy to your hard drive? Surely there must be some software that can do this? Sorry! Not my area of expertise :)

Is it scratched?

You can get polish that fills in the scratches so the data can be read.

Have you tried something like CloneCD to make an image of it and see if that reads?

I didn't see any scratches, so will have a closer look. I'll also have a look at this clone CD item.

Thanks for the help.

Brilliant - even better. :) I'll give it a go after work.

I used to use CD-R Diagnostic (as it was called back then) with 100% success when I had problems with packet writing under Windows Me. Check out http://www.infinadyne.com/cddvd_diagnostic.html.. There 's a free evaluation version (http://www.infinadyne.com/pub/diagnostic.exe) that will find all recoverable files but won't actually recover them, so you can see if it's worth paying for first.
