Thank the TV God for Law & Order

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

No surprise, I've said it before, this seems to be a particularly bad year for series that I watch. It seems like it's often weeks between new episodes.

I stopped watching Law & Order years ago. But last night I went ahead and created WLs for both it, and the SVU spin off.

Now at least I have something interesting to watch. The To Do list is crammed with episodes just for my entertainment pleasure!!!!! :D

I watch my first episode of any Law & Order show when Criminal Intent came out. Since then, I now watch all Law & Order shows religiously. 2 summers ago, I watched a lot of the old shows on TNT and such.

Law & Order is a great show. Way better than any CSI show.

HERE HERE!

I am just frustrated now because I have just about caught up on all the SVU reruns on USA, so I rarely get a new episode to watch anymore (except when it is a new episode of course)

It's one of the few series I've found where the women over age 40 (the judges, the lawyers, etc.) are played by actresses that actually look their age and are believable in their roles. Good stories, presented with a mature outlook, even with the somewhat predictable format. Still a good show to watch.

So, are there 3 series? L&O, SVU, and Criminal Intent? When I was WL'ing last night, I didn't notice a 3rd series.

Yup... 3 of them... Actually, 4... there was one that was based on real life court proceedings... I forget what it was called...

Law and Order: Some Subtitle

Anyone remember what this one was called? I didn't like it at all..

But all three of the fictional drama series are fantastic... I have my TiVo#1 recording the first-runs...and my TiVo#2 with 5 KUID episodes of each series just in case I have nothing good to watch...

Law & Order: Crime & Punishment

Posted by: Zevida

I've started to lose interest in Law and Order because I don't particularly like any of the characters from any of the seasons. I also have found their storylines increasingly "ripped from the headlines" and are really too focused on shocking than showing good stories.

SVU, on the other hand, I LOVE. I've got an SP set up for USA and even though I'm getting more episodes I've already seen, I still get a lot of them that are "new" too me. I don't remember if I have an SP for the new ones on NBC but for some reason I think it conflicted with another show I watch. I like all the characters they've ever had on the show (I think they are more three-dimensional) and find the stories better.

Criminal Intent I've seen a few times and it's too much like CSI for me. I don't like the "I'm utterly brilliant, can do everything, know everything, and am the greatest" type characters.

I was going to start another thread called "Thank the TV God for Cold Case Too!"...

I find Cold Case to be extremely well done...

The L&Os and Cold Case are definitely must sees for me and my wife... Boomtown would be on the list too if it did not get cancelled...

Agreed! I've been stacking up L&O episodes of all flavors on my NEW TIVO! since I got it last Friday and I couldn't be happier. I've seen many of the SVU series but I still watch them again because usually I don't remember "whodunnit". :D

I also like it because unlike CSI, I can eat a meal while watching it and not get nauseated.

By the way, I've heard there's a fourth (or fifth, if you count C&P) series coming out at some point in the future, and that that'll probably be the last one.

For me, it doesn't get any better than Ice-T or Vincent d'Onofrio.

Posted by: Rcrew

Cool, I created a new WL for C&P!

And since I'm still feeling neglected, I went and got a WL for old JAGs too!

Now I'll at least have stuff I might enjoy backed up a bit! Besides Summer is coming...

I really only like the original Law & Order series enough to try to watch it regularly. The others just haven't really grabbed by interest as much. Which is just as well. I am really thinking I'm about to overdose on cop/court shows.

Posted by: Rcrew

Funny you should bring that up Doug. I'm just reflecting on how many of the shows I've watched are Cop/Law/Court centered, or include an element of such:

JAG
ED
CSI & it's evil twin
Alias
Practice
Judging Amy
Hack
Cold Case

& now I've gone and added Law & Order back into my mix. Good thing I can't stand NYPD Blue anymore...

When I first started watching Law & Order (relatively recently considering it's been around for so long -- probably only in the last year and a half), I created season passes for every channel showing re-runs -- must've been 5 or 6 including west coast feeds, so I could catch up. That was when the 28-day rule being ironclad really got on my nerves. I wish it could somehow be configured. I'm the only person who uses the TiVo, so if I could just make it "forever" instead of 28 days, I'd have been able to watch them all, but it got to the point where I was spending more time deleting episodes I'd already seen that I just stopped trying to fully catch up.

What about Without a Trace?

Last night I was watching Cold Case and some kid went missing in the middle of the episode, I was thinking they need to call in the "without a trace" crew to find the missing kid to solve the old crime.

I'd like to see the 28 day rule be configurable to forever as well.

Here's my workaround -- a spreadsheet with a listing of every episode they've made (got the info from www.epguides.com). I've got columns with the actors playing the 2 cops, the Lt, the 2 lawyers, and the DA set up with autofilter so I can quickly see just the episodes with Angie Harmon (for example). As I watch each episode, I mark it in the spreadsheet as viewed.

When I get some free space on the TiVo (summer/Christmas breaks usually), I go to my FRO SP for Law & Order and select View Upcoming Episodes. With my spreadsheet handy, I can easily manually select episodes I haven't seen yet. Of course, since I've now seen 80.8% of the episodes, and another 11.0% of them are waiting on my TiVo to be watched, there aren't many left to record.

Well, dinner and 3 episodes done! But I can tell I'm not going to enjoy the jumping around the time continuum much...

You're hard core. :) Isn't there an epsiode number available via the extended program info screen? That'd probably be simpler.

As I understand it, there are some hacks that can do this sort of thing. I've never explored them much because it wasn't clear if they'd function with the DirecTV TiVo platform and its dual tuners. The idea is they regularly run script to check what's on the To Do list, and if it's already in another list, it deletes it from the To Do list.

This from the guy who scoured pages of HD TiVo pre-order info and compiled it into a single post :D

At the time I scoured it, there were just over 800 posts here... since then all I've done is what I'm told. :)

I like Law & Order, but the plots for SVU seem to be running together. I'll read the guide of an ep, and think, oh, I've seen this one. Then hit play and it's slightly different from the one I was thinking about. I still think they have a great cast though.

CI is cool. I like the creepy detective that seems to know everything.

I didn't like Crime & Punishment either. I watched it once and that was it. When it was on, it was a summer show only.
