HD Tivo & Ebay. Price Guesses?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Now that we are a few days away from the first units shipping, I have to wonder what will happen to those who pre-ordered from more than one retailer. Will they cancel other orders after they get the first one, or will they test the ebay waters to see what the unit will fetch?

My guess - $1500 minimum.

Any other speculation?

I'm sure by the end of April it won't be that hard to find one with all the big box retailers selling them and some places taking pre orders now say they can get them by April 15th or the first week in May. I don't know how many people would pay $500 for a month less wait time. I guess there are some that will but I would just wait. Maybe it's easy for me to say because I am #222 on the list but I wouldn't pay any more to get in the first 200 that will get it a week or so before me so...

Plus you've signed a contract with D* to get the TiVo, if you don't use that card you'll get charged.

I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to get out of as long as someone activates it. If you sell it then someone else is. You could also activate it and deactivate it right away. I had a receiver die so I replaced it with my spare receiver. Product protection sent me a replacement and said I had to activate it within so many days or they would charge me for the receiver. I called and activated it and made sure it worked then deactivated it on the same call with the same tech and was never charged.

Thing is, who knows when they're going to get more. When I bought the Playstation 2 when it first came out by camping outside a CC with my girlfriend, we got one for me and one for her brother. When he said he didn't want it we turned around and sold it for $650 (cost $300) and they didn't get more on the market for months. Who knows who knows who knows. If all us dorks out there buy them up, they'll always be some big-spender who wants it now and will pay for it.

Also, I see that the EBay offer is not a "Buy it Now" for $100.00, but instead has a starting bid of $100.00. Are you hoping to make a profit on the $100.00 deposit?

Why not.. it wasn't my original intention, but I dont see it being any different than someone selling the receiver once they get it, I'm just skipping all the leg work. Plus, since I'm now unemployed (hence why I am not buying it in the first place) I can use all the money I can get, so if someone wants to pay the full price or more (say it goes for $200) to get it early, then there should be no problems with that. If VE is willing to transfer orders to other individuals, it shouldn't matter if I'm willing to give up my deposit for free or sell it for $500.

Isn't it funny how some people in a democratic society are offended by the capitalist action of others!?

I applaud your business acumen, and hope you make a tidy sum! Then again, you said that was not your original intent, but often good business is more luck than brains anyway.

If people think this is "sneaky", they should also be ticked off that people are signing up for $99 HDTV receivers, with the intent to sell them for hundreds more in a few months once they get their HDTiVos...

I'll just wait a month and get it locally..... I've waited this long anyway!

I would not pay a premium to jump line and actually plan on waiting for the price to drop on HDTivo before I make my purchase. Frankly, I am not sure an HDTivo is worth more than $600 to me. But I gotta support SocalDave on his decision to auction off his place in line. It was his spot, it is transferrable, and this is a capitalist country.

Good luck on your job search Dave.

I don't know if you were referring to me when you said "Isn't it funny how some people... are offended", but just in case you were, let me say, I was not offended at all. I just asked a question and the member responded to my question and explained the situation.

I am sorry to hear that he is not employed and wish him well.

If you lived in NY I could offer you a job as a carpenter. I need some more good finish carpenters and wood framers.

Then you can get to keep your hdtivo and I can get a new employee.
