(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I bought a 169gb hd to replace the stock 40gb for my t-60. Now my TV shoes NO SIGNAL when my tivo tries to startup...I am afraid that I restarted out of linux and somehow screwed up the new AND old hd's...If I don't get this up tonight, the wife's gonna kill me...
HELP!

Describe exactly what happens when you boot up your T60. Are you seeing the "Welcome, Powering Up ...." or "Almost There ...." screens? If not, then something else is wrong. Maybe you didn't hook up the cables properly?

Provide as many details as you can about how you performed the upgrade and the exact symptoms you're seeing now.

HD starts up, makes normal computer startup noises. NOTHING is shown on TV, except the "NO SIGNAL" on bottom of screen. I am afraid that when I exited (CRTL-ALT-DEL) out of linux that I let the booting to windows screen go on to long. I tried to stop it as soon as it looked like it was done with linux. I am considering reformatting the new hd and starting over...I used the dd method, maybe I did it wrong???

Man do I feel stupid...I can operate a nuclear power plant, but I can't successfully add a hd to my tivo!!!!

I started out with the PTVupgrade lba48 mfstools 2.0 iso...then I tried to follow weaknees and hinsdale (both). I used the DD method since I was just going to keep the 40gb as a backup, not reinstall it. It copied over about three or four hours. Sice I did dd, do I need to "mfsrestore" anything? I say that maybe I needed to get "makeTivoBoot", so I downloaded it...how do I use it? Do I need to put it on a cd or what?

If your Windows version is XP or 2000 it will write a 'signature' to the boot blocks of all the hard drives connected when it boots. Unfortunately, this over-writes something vital in the TiVo boot block, rendering the TiVo unbootable (you'll just reboot at 'welcome').

MakeTiVoBootable may be able to fix it. You can run it off a hard drive or even a floppy if you want.

Robert,
I downloaded it. I will place it on a floppy. How do I tell linux where it is at etc? I know NOTHING about linux except that it is somewhat related to unix...lol!

The last post in that thread describes how to run it. If you've put the MBT on a floppy, you'll need to mount the floppy instead of the hard drive. Something like

mount /dev/fd0 /mnt

Should do the trick and

umount /mnt

when you're done, of course.

Does "03:00: block 0 has signature 9214 rather than 1492 unknown partition table" mean anything?

It means you didn't read the bit about byteswapping. You have to get byteswapping enabled before MTB can work. If you don't see the TiVo's partition table printed in the boot log (dmesg | more), then there's not point in running MTB.

See the first post of the Fixes thread for another hint on byteswapping with MFS Tools 2.0.

Actually,
I did read it...that's why I am using ptvtools ver 7.1 or something like that. It's default is byteswapping on...but one hd (hdb-the old tivo a drive) shows multiple partitions and the new hd (hda) shows the error. Neither works in the Tivo, which makes me think I got some WinXP pixie dust on my linux Tivo, and now the Tivo is complaining!

Anyway,
I am trying to find how to run mtb. I see have the readme from Rantz, but don't know how to run anything in linux.

Help me...please!

Ah, well the byteswapping boot disks all leave hda unswapped so you can get at a Windows drives.

There are detailed instructions for running MTB in the thread I linked in post #5.

The bootdisk I made "blessed" tivo hd...now what?
It still doesn't come up?

You ran BlessTiVo?

You were supposed to run MakeTiVoBootable!

BlessTiVo will have trashed the partition table on that drive. You'll have to copy over from the other one.
