Upgrade Tivo2, Now won't boot

I have a Sony SVR-3000, 4 months old, Win XP with NTFS. I've previously successfully upgraded a Tivo1. I'm an experienced computer repair tech for 18 years, but with no Linux knowledge, although I used to know xenix.

Last night I decided to add a 2nd drive, 120gb. :rolleyes

I downloaded the Hinsdale Tvio guide and MFS Tools 2.0

I read through the instructions. Since I had previously upgraded my Tivo 1, I decided not to spend the time to create a FAT32 partition with Partition Magic on my system. Stupid, I know.

Since my new total storage would be 200gb, I used Step 7, Option #3 "(limited use): Copying Tivo drive to new upgrade drive" so that the swap file would be increased in case of a GSOD. I removed my existing hard drives from my system.

I installed my original 80gb drive as Secondary, Master (hdc). I installed my WD 120gb drive as Primary, Slave (hdb). All went well.

I installed my copied 120gb drive in the Tivo. Fired it up, checked the storage and saw that it was 80gb as expected.

I reinstalled the new drive back into the pc, and ran Step #10, config #2 "mfsadd -x /dev/hdc". Once again I installed the new drive, went to the Tivo screen and it now showed 127gb. All would have been well if I had stopped here.

I now decided to use the original 80gb drive as extra storage.

I reinstalled both drives into my pc. Working 120gb drive on Secondary, Master and old 80gb drive on Primary, Slave. Booted to BIOS to confirm. Booted to MFS Tools, but instead of getting the # sign, it stuck at the line before that. So I thought maybe I should erase the Linux from the old drive first. I removed the 120gb drive, booted Partition Magic 8 from floppy. It said there was no partition on the 80gb drive (so I thought it could not detect Linux). So I created a partition, then deleted it so that I was sure there was nothing on the drive.

Reinstalled and successfully ran "mfsadd -x /dev/hdc /dev/hdb" and the message said that the drive was increased from 120 to 200gb (numbers were a little larger than that, doing this from memory now).

Now when I reinstalled both drives into the Tivo, I get the "Welcome, Powering Up" only. Waited 15 minutes. Shutdown the Tivo. Removed the 2nd, slave 80gb original drive. Changed the jumper on the 120gb drive to be single, booted Tivo and I get the "Welcome", then the "almost there" then reboots. I watched this loop for 5 times.

----------------------

Is there anyway to recover without getting a backup image or ordering a new drive preformatted from Hinsdale?

I see that another option is to purchase the InstantCake CD for $19.99 from ptvupgrade.

If there is no other easy way to fix this problem, then I will do that. I had hoped to be able to retain my saved programs as my wife has several tennis matches on the Tivo and is not a happy camper now.

The new B drive is interfering with the TiVo's access to the A drive. That would suggest a cable or jumper problem.

Do both drives spin up? Perhaps you need a PowerTrip (Weaknees) or SmartStart (9th Tee)?

I am not an expert, but I did overcome this same problem last night. I upgraded my S2 Hughes DirecTivo DVR40 from 40gig to (2) 160gig drives. After my first few attempts it was stuck in the power up/just a few moments....then a reboot. The same problem you had.
Then I had a brainstorm. I tried another computer and it still didn't work. Finally I realized maybe I needed to format the drives since multiple restores had been tried on them. Each time it appeared to work perfectly with the linux boot disk. It just wouldn't power up in the Tivo. So I formated both drives as Fat32 just to erase all data.
I tried with the second computer again and it worked flawlessly this time!
My guess is that if you have an unsuccessful attempt that you need to erase the new drive(s) before you try it again.
I hope this helps.....I'm enjoying my 243 hour DTivo now!

There's no way that formatting the drives is what fixed your problem.

It won't do any harm, though.

I would keep working on the current set. It may be fixable.

Like the original 60 hour Series 2 the SVR3000 has physical mounting for two hd's and approx. 70 watt Power Supply.

I think the drives were incompatible for some reason. A kind sole let me download an image file for my system.

I was able to restore to the original Maxtor 80gb drive and it worked in the Tivo. Then I tried to restore to the new WD 120gb drive and it also worked fine in the Tivo.

However when I tried to restore to both drives, it would lock at the Welcome screen even though the restore went fine with no errors. I tried swiching the A/B drive and still failed.

I also tried to restore to one disk, then increase the size. Again the program showed success with total space increase correct. Yet the Tivo would fail to get past the Welcome.

So I've missing my Tivo after 24 hours, and restored to the new 120GB drive. My menu is being created now, so all is well.

I tried every jumper configuration in the Tivo to no avail. I beleive the two drives are incompatible.

Well, I thought my Tivo was working correctly but now I find out it won't record anything.

It switches to the channel and starts to record, but the red light never goes on. I tried to manually record and it says it is recording but it does not.

I've decided to erase everything (though the Tivo menu) and see if that fixes it.
