The Sopranos 3/21 - spoilers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Might as well get the conversation going for this week. While I thought this week's episode was a little better than the snore-fest aired last week, it looks like things might really start to pick up a little based on next week's previews. I'm surprised how much of a non-issue Tony and Carmella's separation has been thus far.

I'm really hoping Janice gets whacked this season. Or at least starts getting the pimp slap from Bobby. Why on earth would she dump out that poor kid's milk?

For the same reason Bobby said to him, "No more Snapple for you."

Posted by: harvscar

I loved Paulie back in action, "The kid jumped out of the tree and attacked me with a chainsaw, T."
I forget, who is the shylock chick that Sack went after related to, I know she showed at Carmine's funeral?

Posted by: Kylep

It's gotta be hard for those two parents to promote weight loss for their kids. Poor kids...

This show was a lot easier to watch on DVD when I could see the whole season at once!

Posted by: jrock

I thought this episode was great. Paulie is awesome, he cracks me up. I think the first few episodes where just setting a lot of things up and now we are going to start seeing a lot of action. I agree watching the whole season on DVD was a lot nicer. I watched season 1 - 4 last October so I have been waiting for what seems like forever for this new season to come.

This episode might have been OK if it was in one of the other (read: better) seasons, but after the first two slow episodes it was dissappointing. Looks like the next one will pick up the pace but I felt strange as I watched the previews. It's like I was pining for an old friend that I haven't seen in a while. The old friend being an exciting episode of The Sopranos.

Posted by: Smiles

I did laugh when Paulie was rolling the mower towards his car.

Wow, I guess I don't know what some of you expect from this show. I thought it was a great hour last night.

Once again, Tony and his cronies insinuate themselves into some poor schnook's life and rob him blind under the guise of "helping him out."

Who was the other couple that showed up late for the Sunday dinner?

Tony's sister Barbara and her family.

Posted by: pmyers

Tony has another sister besides Janice? Yikes, I totally forgot about her.

On a related note, it was interesting to see Artie's reaction when Tony brought up the laundry service just after offering Artie a place to stay. Tony may have been just mentioning it because he honestly thought it was a good deal, but Artie certainly seemed to take it to mean that it was a condition of moving in with Tony.

I agree. It seems like people have gotten their expectations waaay out of line with what the show is like. They remember the entire seasons of past years, but forget that they were all made up of slower episodes - the previous seasons were all like this.

I remember the second season, I was getting a buddy of mine into the show, and for the first 4 or 5 weeks, i had to convince him to stick with it. Then stuff started to really happen and he's been hooked ever since.

The entire show is not going to be like a 2hr Goodfellas movie. They set stuff up and during the year the storyline plays itself out.

Hard to put into words how much I dislike this character.

Posted by: harvscar

Another thing about the show I enjoyed was Junior watching CYE and thinking Jeff and Larry were him and Bobby. A very good episode overall.

Posted by: Pam

Can't believe I'm the first to bring it up. I was cracking up when Uncle Junior saw Curb Your Enthusiasm on TV and thought that Larry & Jeff were himself and Bobby. A little shameless self-promotion for HBO!

It was touching at the end when Tony visited Junior and realized that the old guy really is sick.

I also agree that expectations have been greatly raised by those who watch a whole season at once. This show has never been an action show. It's all about building characters and storylines to dramatic conclusions, but it takes time. It isn't a show for the ADHD-afflicted. I think a contributing factor to these raised expectations is that the trailers tend to build up every upcoming episode as fast paced and action packed. Sets everybody up for disappointment.

Posted by: cpalma

I also remember other seasons (especially last season) and the slow buildup through the series to get to the ending. It kinda bothered me last year, as well, so I'm used to it this season.

I had a hard time watching the Junior scenes, esp. at the end with him and Tony. I think it's because I had started to deal with this with my Dad before he passed away. Junior knows full well what is happening to him, even if he can't remember what happened 10 minutes ago. My dad knew he was getting more forgetful and it made him slip into a deep depression. Junior couldn't express his feelings to Tony at the end of the episode, but his facial expressions said a mouthful. Very touching and very well done.

Poor Adrianna. Another 7 years of this ****! Maybe she'll get lucky and get whacked! LOL

Paulie is a riot. Did anyone figure out how much money he made in those transactions. He only gave Vito $500 of the $1,000 Tony said to pay out, he stole a lawnmower, and he wants a piece of the action. LMAO He's a player all right. Not to mention, Tony gets two pieces of the action (Paulie's and Veech's).

Remind me never to cross Robert Loggia! Whoo, scary character there.

Janice is also very scary!!! Poor Bobby! Also those kids they've got playing Bobby's kids are really good actors. They looked terrified! I would be too! LOL

All in all I think it was a better episode than the 2 previous. Can't wait for next week.

"Anthony, get your jacket. We're leaving!"

"But I don't have a jacket."

Posted by: ClutchBrake

Good episode!

I'm going to keep track this season. By my counting the ratio thus far of bad to good episodes is 2:1.

Yeah, except he's too scary to live. Literally.

The one who's really scary is Steve Buscemi, who keeps his scariness carefully repressed, so he's likely to stay alive longer, and do more scary stuff.

Best of the season. I'd give it an 8, vs. a couple of 4's preceding.

Best parts:
- Paulie hitting the landscaper with a shovel, and Feech's nephew falling out of the tree (only to attack Paulie with a chainsaw ;))
- Christopher opening his mouth at the meeting, and "I remember when you used to wait in the car." Johnny Sack is awesome.
- The old lady propositioning Junior. LMAO!

Janice must go. I think that dust-up with Tony may lead to something. At least I hope so.

Will check the disc. But, I'm not sure the "lady" was really female. ;)

she was gonna give him "half & half" in the back seat.. can anyone explain that one to me?

I want to get a definition on that phrase too, but I'm hesitant to Google it at work....

Posted by: Tac-D

Ok kids, <<Earmuffs>>

From my purely anecdotal research, a half and half is one "half" oral sex, and one "half" straight sex.

End <<Earmuffs>>

Great show, best of the season. I really like the infusion of new characters. There are some very interesting times ahead. The shylock-ess, Tony B, and Robert Loggia's Feech all add new dynamics.

Also, as others have said, Johnny Sack is becoming a compelling character.

heheh, same here, although it'd probably just bring up guiness and harp or guiness and bass :D

my best guess is.. um.. lessee... clean way to phrase this... start off oral, finish manual?

My only issue so far is introducing characters so over the top you know they have to be whacked. I guess they can be entertaining though. Ralph Cifaretto and Richie Aprile, anyone?

Posted by: cbordman

ahh.. is it unusual for a "professional" to offer the first half?

Posted by: DirecTiVoTexas

I loved the "bullet through half the phone book" trick. Awesome scene. And the shylock's offer for all the guys was funny, too.

Standard creative storytelling device.

Setup a situation. Play it out. (Aprile) Set up the same situation. Play it out the same. (Cifaretto).

Setup the same situation (Feech, Tony B) - this time shock your viewer/reader who's been sucked into the pattern, with a different conclusion.

Forgot that one.

Great line when the shooter asked her muscle (I'm paraphrasing).."Is she any good? Why am I asking you? You probably taught her how."

Posted by: David Platt

I'm just curious-- does anybody know if this is the first episode that Edie Falco didn't appear in at all?

Posted by: markp99

How sad to see uncle Jr slipping like this. Very scary and pertinent as my parents are approaching that age. We have no clue what's in store.

The last scene of the ep w/Tony just sitting with Jr on the couch was a very genuine moment. Even with all the history we know about Tony and Jr, they both appeared very human and fragile. Good drama.

Comic moments with Paulie were a perfect balance for me. The choreography of the SHOVEL->ROPE->TREE->FALL->LAWNMOWER->TRUNK was just excellent! :D

Posted by: AR

I grew up in the neighborhood that Uncle Junior was sitting in. The big bottle at the plant was originally a Hoffman Soda bottle plant and later changed to a Pabst brewery.

Talk about scary - you couldn't sit there for 10 mins. without some harm coming to you.

By the way, Uncle Junior could not really walk from that location to the water - its too far and way too dangerous!

My kids constantly say: You lived HERE? when we drive by on the Parkway.

No wife and no Doctor make for a great episode. Usually Paulie is at his best when going at it with Christopher but in this episode he shined by himself. No Silvio and little of Tony B but no Melfi made up for it. The Adriana storyline needs to be resolved one way or another.

Posted by: ihatecable

I’m sick of Adrian. She’s such an annoying character, to hear her wine to the mousy FBI chick as she rats out the family is driving me nuts (any scene with Adrian is makes me want to drive sharp objects though my head). Actually all the soprano women are really annoying and I think no one would complain if half of them got whacked. Chris should whack Adrian big time and then hook up with her friend from the bar that Chris was flirting with last week. She looks really hot :) and looks like she would be a fun time as well as not nearly as annoying.

Posted by: LlamaLarry

And what happened to Adriana? She looks pretty rough in the face, but I can't tell if they are making her out to be stressed or if she did not age well in the hiatus. :(

I am hoping she gets whacked soon, the FBI is really dragging their feet with her as they have no timeline and no way out for her (not to mention nothing of consequence on her). Dead girl walking.

You're right, they had her on a B.S. charge, but the point they made was.. We'll bring you in, book you, and set you free and you'll be free to go explain to Tony S. how you brought an undercover FBI agent into his home.

You're Adriana.. What are your choices? Play along is your *only* choice.

As for dragging their feet - the idea with informants is information.. for as long as you can get it. In the real world a situation like Adriana's could go on for years..

I don't think she'll be that lucky. And I don't think she'll make it to the "Apostle Protection Program" either..

Preview spoiler...
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Since it looks like Chris is going to fall of the wagon soon, I think they are setting us up for a tragedy of some kind between them... he returns to drinking and is struggling with his position in the crew, she becomes more isolated and alienated from the family... it's a volatile situation. Maybe Chris will discover that she's an informant and take care of it himself, or try to hide it... or Tony finds out (since he can just sniff it out, as we saw last week).

But we may be set up for it all season.

As for how Adriana looks, I've noticed in interviews that Drea De Matteo looks a lot older in real life than the character. Maybe it's just catching up. But she's only 31.

Now that's funny because every time I see him I can't help but think of a movie in which he played a gangster, Innocent Blood; getting killed was not the end of his character by a long shot.

She should have told Chris right from the start. Tony will end up figuring it out sooner or later and have to whack her.

Posted by: pmyers

the only way she isn't going to get wacked is if Tony and crew actually use her to give incorrect information to the Feds.....and even then she's probably going to get wacked.

The girl who has to wear fur, because ...? Smokin!
Adriana is pretty hot, but she will be gone soon enough. No-one can put up with that whiner, however good looking she is.

Given just the two choices between

1) wacked sooner or
2) wacked later ..

Even someone as clueless as Adriana will pick # 2..

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
from Tom Shales' season-opening review in The Washington Post:
The Sopranos are back. "The Sopranos" is back. Are they and is it as good as ever? Yes. Maybe better. Next question.

Ah, yes, in the back row there -- the lady in the tutti-frutti hat. What can we do for you? "Be careful not to give away any of the twists and turns of the plot, and don't tell us which major character suddenly gets very killed in Episode 4." That's not really a question, madam, but we'll comply. Besides, HBO sent only the first four episodes for review, at least so far.

So we know someone important, probably not one of the new guys, is gonna get it next episode. Only question is who?

Posted by: Bananfish

Is nobody gonna mention the quintessential tag line in this episode? "All I know is, he [Tony S.] never had the makings of a varsity athlete." The last time Junior said it, I almost blew my Snapple out my nose.

bananfish

Posted by: markp99

Hey! Lay off the Snapple!

Posted by: jeff125va

I think the fact that pretty much all we saw of Adriana was her asking how long it's gonna go on (and the answer which will certainly outlast the series) is a foretelling that it's going to be resolved some time in the near future.

As disturbing as they are, I like that they have scenes like the one with Feech beating the crap out of that guy. It's a reminder that these really are bad guys. It's one thing when one of their own gets whacked for breaking the rules they've chosen to live by, quite another with the landscaping guy. Same with the waiter in the first episode.

Posted by: mask2343

Funniest episode ever. Uncle Junior at Sunday dinner was classic.

Tony fighting with Janice was great too. I just love the family drama. Most of you seem to want the bloody whackings though.

Posted by: Redleg

Good call, Bananfish. I will be disappointed if Uncle Junior is relegated to silliness and senility this season; the tension and politicking between him and Tony has been an essential part of the story.

quote:
"I remember my mother and my father arguing about... something, I don't know. I remember her talking about my father's feeble-minded brother, but I thought she meant you!"

And when he drank Furio's wine...
quote:
Reminds me of people's feet!

Heck this week he had the funniest line of the night...
quote:
Go s*** in your hat!

Posted by: jrock

I thought the line "He's dead to me" was funny when they mentioned Jr after the dinner scene, it made me think of the season when he said the same thing about his mother.

-Joe

Posted by: catinthehat

At first, I thought Junior was just faking all the senility. Easier to get off a second trial if everyone thinks he is senile, rather than everyone thinking he is faking it. However, I suppose if the neurologist (who met Tony at the golf course) says he is really going senile, then I suppose it's true.

She's got a lot of nasty tats too. I think she's hot. Even with that Jersey mall hair and nail. I thought this was one of the best episodes ever. Flat out funny. Lorraine Calluzzo's line about "...what if I was a nigger standing here" was such a line. I want to start a drinking game where you have to do a shot every time someone in an episode hugs another.

I just about fell outta my chair when Tony said that cause my father used to say that to my mother all the time .. not really in anger.. but more like when he'd be frustrated and trying to fix the lawnmower and she'd walk by with 'helpful' advice like "Does it have gas in it? You should put more in to be sure."

As a long time TCer to a newbie, welcome, but calm down. This is a friendly place. No need to be hostile, especially in a thread like this.

It's supposed to be ironic. First he was faking it, now he really is senile.
