Pimp my Ride
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I caught two episodes of this show on MTV2 and it's pretty funny to watch. It's like every other "Before & After" show on TV, except this time a rap star (Xzibit)? host takes a crap car to a custom shop and has it "pimped out" (Candy paint, millions of LCD screens, subwoofers galore, etc.). It's only a half-hour, which is perfect; while I may not enjoy the rides myself, it is a very dramatic change. Having owned an '86 Olds myself, I was a little jealous of the guy in the 3rd episode.

I like it a lot too - the Daewoo Hi-Jet micro van was the best (IMHO). The Caddy and Cutlass episodes were not quite as good since you actually do see pimped versions of those cars. THey should do more junkers that don't normally get the pimp treatment. Old Hyundais, 80s Volvos, Pintos, Gremlins, Ford Tuarus, Yugos, Honda Civics.....errrr, wait - scratch that last one!
I'd also like to see different stuff besides DVD screens, wheels, and paint jobs. Let's see some cars that hop, chopped or stretched cars, hardtops into ragtops, lowriders, stuff like that.
And yes, it is Xzibit hosting.

I've enjoyed the show also, and loved the Hi-Jet make over. I thought the Nile river in the Cadillac was absurd. But, the shoe carrier was a neat addition.
West Coast Customs is famous and I'm sure their work on these cars is very good, but I would have loved to have seen more of the necessary body work. In the limited time, all you see is the car going in the spray booth and then coming out. All 3 cars needed major body work and to not show more of what it took was a slap to the artist doing it.
From that perspecitve, "Rides" and "Chop, Cut, and Restore" have done a better job but but without the personal twist.

Thanks for detailing the nature of the show, I may take a peek. At first my mind was wondering what exactly you were advertising on here.

It comes on MTV on Thursday at 10:30pm.

The funny thing is that they show the engine compartment before but never show it after, so I'm sure they never clean up the engine.

I'd love to see the condition of these cars 6 months after their make-over. I think they will be ready for a re-run.

Along the same lines, I was wondering if they even do anything to improve how the vehicles actually run. I'm sure that Hi-Jet needed some engine work, if not a whole new engine. It seems real silly to spend all that money on cosmetic stuff while the actual vehicle is still barely road worthy. But with so many people running around with rims that cost more than their cars I guess it isn't that big of a deal for some people. At the end of the Hi-Jet episode I was thinking that the car owner should strip the car of all that equipment, sell it all, and go buy a decent, reliable car.
Anyway, it's still a fun show to watch.

I'm not sure if this show is TiVo-worthy, but it sure is funny! So far I caught the last 15 minutes of the Easter-egg lavender Honda Civic with the PS2 in the back seat and the really cool 60-something Mustang that came out AWESOME!!

I'm actually loving the show. I love that it is only a half hour and doesn't focus so much on the actual work (like in Rides).
I thought those flame throwers that they had to take off the Mustang were awesome!

I've seen a few of the shows. So, these people can't afford to fix a broken tail light, but they're going to be able to afford the insurance on their new "ride"? Riiiight. Stolen or sold within 3 months of completion!

Last nights ep with the Mustang was the best one yet. It even beats the Hi-Jet. The work done was incredible. I really like the clouds on the ceiling. And they didn't put in anything stupid (like the 8 track from a couple of weeks ago, or a fish tank or a waterfall).
The flame thrower exhaust was a cool idea but I knew there was no way they could keep it. That stuff would get your car impounded.
The interior guy deserves ALOT of credit on this one. He did a GREAT job. Matter of fact the whole team really did well on this one. I wonder how much extra business West Coast Custums is getting from this. I know they were real popular with celebrities before this but now I wonder if Joe Schmo's are coming in with the cars that their granddads gave them.
How long till we see a U-Go on this show?

I saw another show similar to ths, "Monster Garage". I thought "Pimp my Ride" was out there - these guys at Monster Garage took a police cars and souped it it with Suicide doors, gold spinner rims, and a doughnut fryer in the trunk with a conveyor that led to a display case behind the doors on the pasenger side.

oh yeah...if you search this forum you'll find lots of talk of Monstor Garage.

That's one of the reasons I liked the Mustang -- it looked like something that could actually be driven and wasn't just for show.....

yep... same goes for replacing the tires. You know those tires are expensive as hell! Like I said before, the owners would be wise to sell their cars immediately after the show, take the cash and go buy a decent, reliable car.

I saw the commercials for this show before it started but forgot to set up a SP. After seeing this thread, I set up a SP and caught the Mustang... that was one GORGEOUS car when they were done with it!

Could you believe those floorboards...or lack thereof...in that Mustang?
Posted by: nmiller855
Many years ago our mailman had a car that had rusted out floorboards. One of his kids fell through the hole while he was driving. Lucky for them, the kid wasn't hurt but the dad cut peices of plywood to cover the holes.

I liked the Mustang episode but WTF is up with putting a video screen in a classic? I'm a big fan of classic cars, and a purist at that. And the video screen just didn't seem right in something that old. It would have been better if they had done a complete original restoration.
That particular episode made me feel like the WCC guys shouldn't be allowed near anything classic.

Well your right....WCC aren't a restoration shop. They are used to dealing with cars that just rolled off the assembly line. Nothing against them though.

Mine weren't that bad but my 67 impala had the same problem before the problem was remedied. Kind of like a sunroof in reverse.

SpikeTV has something similar called "Ride with Funkmaster Flex" where they fix up celebrities junkers for those who enjoy this show.

On 'Rides' this week (on TLC) they did a profile of WCC. Pretty cool to see the the same guys from WCC in a documentary instead of the MTV type of show.
They showed them working on a variety of cars, with the most of the focus being on Lawyer Milloy's H2 upgrade (NFL star).
They also did some work on a Ferrari Enzo, which was pretty cool. (just new wheels, but it wasn't a simple swap)

If only MTV could get their guide data to be current for this show! I keep having to recording all the re-runs to make sure I don't miss a new one. :(

Just saw the '81 Trans Am ep the other night - now that car looked awesome. And it was a true POS car before hand - upholsterly in pieces, right-side mirror duct-taped on (and not well), bald tires, 5 different paint colors.
I loved the exterior - silver/charcoal pearlescent with black trans am phoenix on the hood - but the interior improvements weren't really my style - mini-chandelier dome light, espresso machine in the center console, complete fold-out vanity in the trunk, etc. But then again, I'm not a girl.
Still - I would gladly drive that car.
Oh - one more thing. I'm pretty sure they also re-work (if not completely replace) the engine. When they are spending $30K+ on the car, an engine overhaul is a drop in the bucket. And in the Trans Am episode, her car definitely sounded better after the transformation was complete (I know, it could have been a new exhaust).

I like this show too, it's pretty funny and interesting, I just hope everyone knows that all they do is make the car look "pretty" and the car probably drives the crappy same.

It looked mighty shiny in the after picture. Could have just be a chrome air filter but I bet the pimped the engine too.

I wonder if they don't do some work on the engine or the systems... Because what is the point of making a junker look nice if it is going to fail shortly afterwards

too make a tv show? WCC is a body shop, not a engine shop. As long as it drives out and they can get the "shot" then they have succeeded.
