Symantec Ghost & TiVo

Hopefully a simple question here. I currently have a Series 2 TiVo 40GB version and plan on upgrading it with a larger HDD soon. Is there any reason why I cannot just use the DOS version of Ghost 2003 to clone the 40GB drive to the new larger drive if I only wanted to replace the 1 drive in there and not go to a 2-drive setup? I do this in and out all week long at work (Network Admin) for our systems without any problems.

Any particular reason why not to? Thanks!

Use MFS Tools 2.0. Ghost won't work with Tivo drives.

Would you mind explaining why it doesn't? I'm curious more than anything. If ghost can do a forensic quality clone what about TiVo messes things up? Is there change to the actual programming code the MFS Tools has to do to make the TiVo recognize the larger size or something? Thanks. :)

A search in this forum will probably turn up more technical details, but essentially Ghost cannot deal with the unique data partitions & formatting used by Tivo's hard drives.

Yes, the forensic clone will work, but that doesn't gain you very much (you can do a forensic clone with dd, which is on the boot disks we use for upgrading TiVoes). The reason you'd want to use Ghost - because it can do clever thing like resize partitions - doesn't apply because the TiVo doesn't use the same partitioning scheme as a PC.

There are few instances where I recommend cloning a drive as part of an upgrade. If you want to copy your recordings to the new drive, it's normally better to use MFS Tools rather than dd/Ghost.
