The Shield 3/23 - "Bottom B**ch" - SPOILERS!
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: Skittles
So, after last week's mediocre offering, The Shield seemed to step right back into its true form tonight.
The whole plotline with the prostitute and Vic was good. Her breakdown, and Vic's laying down the law, reminded me of all the things that make this show great.
For me, though, the real shocker was the Dutch thread. There were some brilliant moments with Dutch tonight. The phallic lineup (including Claudette's reaction), the coaxing of the false confession, and then the phone call at the end... it all just coalesced together into the perfect story vehicle for Dutch.
It was a great episode, with lots of whizbang moments (Vic checking in on Connie's son, Shane proposing, the tension between Julian & Danny, Aceveda's toeing of the line between his obligations as Captain and his political aspirations). Why can't all TV be this great?
Is the $20 that Vic threw out at the end of the episode supposed to be one of the marked bills from the Money Train? Because, during the episode, they mentioned that the Money Train bills were all the old printings, but the bill they showed him crumbling up was the newly designed version.

It really seems like Vic is trying to change, by keeping a distance from the hooker. I'm hoping we get to see the Danni, Julian storyline fleshed out a bit more.
And Shane's gf (now fiance) is wacked. She goes nuts acting like she's leaving, then tells him she's pregnant. Then, agrees to marry him? Sounds like trouble to me. :)
Yes, Dutch's thread this week was excellent. This is the kind of stuff that makes this show so good.
And I wondered about that 20 too. The only reason I can think that they would show it so pointedly was if it was one of the old ones, making us assume it was marked. Since it was new, I'm confused. (I seriously hope that wasn't a screwup...)
And we have yet another attractive female on the cast. (Trish from the decoy squad.)

The take I had on the $20 was that Vic just got an idea on how to launder the money.

I took the close up on the bill as an illustration of how that's all she cared about. She manipulated Vic into helping her get away from her pimp so she could get with another who she could get more money from. Vic threw the money out the window because picking it up in the street was what she was doing with her life.
He was thinking of how harmful the desire for money can be, which gave him the idea to check up on Connie's child. Maybe he's feeling a little guilt about what he's done regarding the money train, too.
Or maybe I'm thinking too much. :p

Great episode as usual... When Shane's little domestic disturbance first started, I thought it seemed like crappy acting, but towards the end of it, I had to take a deep breath and say "wow, that was good." Good show all around.

I'm not certain about this, but I think the hooker was played by the same girl who plays Luke's girlfriend on Joan of Arcadia.
If true, she could not have played two more different roles in two more different shows featuring cops.
Edit: I'm sure it's her.

buy some washing machines? :)
Man Shane being a daddy is scary. So now the woman gets 12.5% of the moneytrain.

It's her. The imdb page is just incomplete. Her official site mentions the guest starring role.

All I can say is wow! The Vic hooker scene while he was convincing her was really powerful. You'd never see that stuff on regular TV. Despite how he treated her it seems he has a soft spot for hookers something tells me we haven’t seen the last of her.
It also looks like they lost their clubhouse to the decoy squad, but then again with decoys like Trish having them around wouldn’t be so bad. Let’s hope we see more of her dressed up like a hooker, lol
Regarding the $20 Vic threw out the window it’s a new one so it definitely can’t be the marked ones. Unless the marked money is in consecutively bundled bills the team is so screwed. Even if they find out the money is marked and get the serial numbers just think of those guys looking for those marked $20 bills out of that table full of money? (Talk about not having your cake as well as not being able to eat your cake too, lol) Having to deal with the new $20s only speeds up their timetable and puts them more at risk.
Shane’s girlfriend, one word. Psycho. She’s an accident waiting to happen.
The Dutchboy stuff was pretty good too but I watch the show for Vic.

I'm with Idearat. I think the close up on the $20 was to tell us that Vic has come up with a way to get new $20s for the old ones. And I'm sure that the hooker is going to be involved with this somehow.
Although I'm not up to speed on the economy of prostitutes, I can't imagine they cycle through enough money to completely turn over the money snagged from the Money Train.
As an aside, you'd think that they'd have come up with some code name for it at this point. Even something as simple as MT. I realize it isn't a huge investigation, but I wouldn't want to be walking around the police station saying "our Money Train money" 5 times a day, because eventually someone is going to hear you.

True, but this is a TV show. Some things have to be spelled out, otherwise, they'll lose all but the most dedicated of fans. :)

Does it seem that Julian has been accepted back into the police fold a little too easily compared to the grief he got from those guys last year? Or was it only supposed to be a small but vocal bunch that were hassling him? I'm also not sure of the length of time since his beating last season to now.
Shane's girlfriend seems over the top, but it adds to the drama. It's also the type of person he would be attracted to. It was one of those hysterical fits/fights you see between characters on tv, but in real life you know if someone acted that way you'd think, This person has real problems!
I like the little things they put in this episode, like the scene of Vic dropping off his daughter. No need for them to explain it any further, it was emotional just as it was. Claudette flipping through the Polaroids cracked me up, that was a funny bit. The guys laughing as the hooker flashed the cop, Vic bullying the hooker, all are just character bits that added up to full portraits of these characters.
It still continues to be an intriguing and well-done show that has so many possibilities for drama that you cannot really guess too far ahead just what will happen next.

THe ones who hassled him last season were fired (laid off) by Aceveda because of the budget cuts; they then beat Julian in retaliation.

I just started watching this ep and saw the name Mageina Tovah and realized who it was.

I liked this episode.
Has anybody ever mentioned on this board that Vic's daughter is actually Mike's daughter? Gee that exchange upon the return from the mini-putt had real feeling behind it.
Vic having to go bad-a$$ on the hooker so he wouldn't get sucked in like last time ANNNND how far did he get sucked in last time? Was his concern over Connie's son in the foster home just guilt or is there some genetic tug that Vic might not even be fully aware of?
Liked A$$-invaders handling of the perv school superintendant. I think Claudette liked the way he was able to get the right outcome.
I like what we've seen of the Decoy Squad so far. The leader of the DS is played by the actor Gareth Williams. If he looks familiar it's because he's been on a lot of shows from NYPD Blue, Judging Amy, L&O and in case anyone forgot- Dawson's.

Yup, another great episode.
But what about the loose ends? We haven't seen or heard from Julian's wife and kid for some time. And Dutch had a girlfriend from last season too.

He talked about that on the commentary track during one of the season 1 episodes. I was thinking the same thing during that scene.

And Vic's wife is actually the wife of Shawn Ryan, the show's creator...

You know it's amazing how I can watch a show and not realize how much actually happened until I read on the boards. Skittles, your absolutely right a great episode. Truth is I never would have even been aware of this show if TiVo hadn't recorded an episode for me a few months back. On my SP list it's moved up to number 1, even better then the Sopranos. I think flat on out it's the best show on television today.....and it ISN'T on HBO.

I'm still unclear on the hookers real reason for ratting out her pimp. Was she mad at him? Or was she angling to be the new pimp's new star? Or something else?

The Shield is just one of those shows that lends itself to multiple viewings, because more often than not, you're missing *some* subtlety, or forgetting about an entire scene, because so much is going on. It amazes me that the writers can cram so much content into an hour.
But, you're right. One of the best shows on TV. :)
Oh, and one more thing... this makes the third week that FX hasn't run a banner bar over the show!

Question about that $20 bill please. I must have missed it - when and how did Vic find out that some of the money train cash was marked?

He doesn't know they're marked. He just knows that a lot of the $20s in their stash are the old design and they're being phased out of distribution. So, in a couple years, when they go to spend them, it will be more conspicuous, since the vast majority of $20s will be the new design then.

He doesn't know. In fact, Aceveda has made a point to keep him in the dark about it. The only thing he does know is that those are old twenties, which means they need to offload them faster than they would have liked, to keep from looking suspicious passing off old bills.

Imagine in the real world if they would do the switchout of the old/real money!
"you have 5 years go give your money in or it's worthless"

Actually, the switchout IS happening in the real world. They're doing it the same way that they take old damaged money out of the system. 5 years from now, you probably won't see any 20s other than the new ones.

of course I should have said mandatory in my previous posting...i was not clear and realize the banks do it all the time yet it's funny how someone at the bank tells me they keep sending the same crappy bills back.

I know Vic is supposed to be a cop on the edge, and thats what makes the show so good, but man, didint anyone else think he went way to far with the hooker ? You can see that the other guys did when he was roughing her up, the gun in the mouth was brutal, makes it hard to root for the guy. First he offs Kellerman, now this .....
I also thought the look on Claudettes face was great when she figured out who was selected in the lineup.

Sorry to jump in so late -- just had my Shield-a-thon this week and am all caught up.
He didn't go too far with the hooker, he knew that's the only thing she would respond to. Being his bottom b**ch.
As for FX not running banner ads, it must only be in the first airing per week. My viewing of 3x02 had two occasions where the ad for ID4 was so loud I had to rewind and turn on CC, you couldn't hear the dialogue at ALL....
They are definitely setting up Vic to have a new ally on the decoy squad, and possible love interest?
BTW, Dutch had a G/F at the end of S1, but not S2 as I recall....
