Oops ... while upgrading an SD-DVR40 to a 120GB drive, I forgot the "b" (byte swapping) option when using mfsrestore to load backup to the SD-DVR40. Everything seems to work fine - should I be concerned?

Nope - you don't need it as along as the backup was made with mfstools 2.

-b amd -B set the byte ordering. If you got that wrong, the TiVo wounldn't boot.
MFS Tools 2.0 can figure out the correct byte order itself unless, as Michael says, the backup was made with MFS Tools 1.x, which doesn't record the original byte order in the backup.

what if the backup was made with MFSTools 1 & the restore is being done with MFSTools2? (When was version 2 released?)

MFS Tools 2.0 is nearly two years old, so this is not an issue that comes up very often these days.
As Hinsdale includes -b in his suggested command for Series 2 restores, that will force the correct byte order.
The point was, omitting it will normally have no effect and, if it did have an effect, you'd know something was wrong right away.

Thanks for the advice -- the backup and restore were done with mfstools 2, so no problems.

I have several of these units, and I omit the b option when doing the backup using mfstools 2 on cd. I use -xzpi and all is well. I also include the -s 127 for the swap file increase. I have yet to have one not work, less I made a type o on the command line somewhere.
