Survivor AS 3/24: spoilers...perhaps
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So I skipped last night's clip show. Refer to the clip shows rant thread for the rationale why....
Did anything truly new or interesting occur? Not just new shots of the contestants, but any clues about what's coming next?
Posted by: nyny523
I watched for 1/2 hour before American Idol - it was your typical, boring clip show...YAWN!
Posted by: Skittles
Not really any clues as to what's coming next, but they did have additional exit interviews, clips, and scenes from almost all the previous episodes. The only really new footage that shows anything coming up was the teaser for next week's episode.
I have to say that, for a clip show, there was a fair amount of interesting material to make it watchable for me. Watching Chapera do their version of Saboga's tribal council elicited a few giggles from me.
Posted by: someguyinmd
There were a few funny new clips. Chapura (i believe) had a mock tribal council after the first immunity challenge and everybody pretended to be someone from Saboga and it was a pretty good laugh.
The only other moment that sticks out in my mind was them showing Colby walking around bowlegged because he had a chaffing problem in the first few days.

Hm. I caught short, edited versions of both of these events in the preview for the show before it started and I moved on to something else. Apparently I didn't miss much!

I think last night proved that somebody tipped Jenna off that her mom was sick. She specifically said "My mom is real sick" during one of the interviews that wasn't on the regular episode....not that she might get sick or be sick
Posted by: scubagal
It is weird about the Jenna thing, because Jeff seemed genuinely surprised when he asked her if she was getting any news from home, which I wouldn't have thought would have surprised him if she was... and secondly, something like that- when her mom did die 8 days later, who would fault CBS for telling her? So if they did tip her off, why would CBS deny it?
I don't know, I still am on the fence and think maybe it is just that mysterious intuition people have when someone they love is in trouble....
Posted by: dthmj
Jena knew her mom was real sick before she agreed to go on Survivor...
But I still think that someone might have tipped her off... The "real sick" comment is not proof she was tipped off.

I think CBS would deny she was getting news. It would really destroy the illusion that the contestants are completely stranded out there with no contact. I remember how much criticism they got just for re-shooting those scenes from one of the challenges a few seasons ago - which was completely benign compared to someone getting news from home, since it didn't at all affect the outcome of anything. I think they'd have a lot of motivation to deny it. In fact I think that's precisely why Probst asked her in the first place, to dispel any rumors or speculation. Not that her simply saying so proves she didn't, but he had to at least address it.

I totally agree. My wife asked me last night why I cared and I just told her that I would be fine with it if they just came clean and told us that they told her.
I think people are using her saying "real sick" out of context...her mother had cancer (I think it was cancer) for years and had been in good health. So Jenna wouldn't refer to her mom's cancer as "real sick". "Real sick" would have to be something above and beyond that and from what she's said in interviews her mom was "healthy" when she left.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I enjoyed last nights show. I was cracking up during the mock tribal council, the coffee thing was funny, and the extra exit interviews were interesting. I wish there had been a little more new stuff and less recapping of the show, but I still enjoyed it. :)

I agree...for a recap show this was awesome.
Posted by: jrock
I have a feeling CBS told her and they just covered it up. Oh well it's just a tv show and I still enjoy it either way.
One of the clips I enjoyed in the recap show was when they drank the Coffee and all got a buzz off the caffeine from not having any for so long. That wasn't shown before. I also got a laugh at them not being able to understand Tom, there where a few scenes there not shown before. Through out the whole show there where quite a few scene's not shown before and I really enjoyed it.

I enjoyed it - especially Boston Rob making fun of Big Tom's mumbling. They really should have skipped the recap part though - I'm sure 90% of the viewers have seen all the episodes anyway. It should be all about the new footage, but perhaps they want to save that for the DVD.
Speaking of the DVDs - who actually buys these things? I find that once a season is over, within hours I no longer give a rats @ss about it anymore. Even with extra footage, I wouldn't even bother to rent a DVD. Big Brother has a complete season DVD available - saw it at Suncoast for like $80. Unless you were in a biosphere for the entire season, why on earth would anyone want this?

I've wondered this too, since I have the same attitude about the shows -- I love them when they're on, but I'd never want to re-watch them.
My guess is they just cash in on the DVD collectors out there; as we've seen on these forums alone, there are many people who buy DVDs just to have them, with collections so large they can't realistically ever watch them more than once, if that. The cost of producing them isn't very high, so it doesn't take many sales to make a little profit.

as soon as one series is over the only thing I can think of is the next season.

I loved RobC's impression of Jeff when Chapera was doing the fake TC. He really had Jeff down to a T. I wish he were still around this season. He was my favorite player by far on Amazon and he never really got a chance to scheme in this version.
That whole fake TC scene was really funny. Especially Amber stuffing her top to portray Tina and her "enhancement."

During the second season (Australia), Mark Burnett admitted that occasionally they don't get the best footage during the actual challenges and when this happens, they will sometimes re-run the challenges with actors and shoot some establishing shots or aerials to give a better idea of what is happening in the challenge. These "re-shoots" never affected the outcome of any challenge and the footage used was never close up enough to tell that the real Survivors were not involved. They also never re-ran the challenges to try and change the outcome. The only reason they ever did this was to get better footage so they could better tell the story. Burnett took a lot of heat for this from people saying that the "reality" of his show was now compromised and they could never trust the outcome again.
As you can tell from how I wrote that, I didn't think it was a big deal. Others obviously will disagree.

In theory I agree with the element of 'reality' comes into question, and I personaly didnt' care about re-shooting scenes either...... but this was her mother dying. If anybody on the shows family was in a car accident and was serioulsy injured or died, or when 9/11 happened and Big Brother was on- I can't believe they wouldn't communicate that (and on BB they did)- so I just don't see why anybody would give CBS flack for that...
I guarantee if they didn't communicate that (unless you are Tom and demanded NOT to know)- can you only imagine the flack they would get?
If had made it on to Amazing Race (and damn it, I tried)- and my mother died or was in a life threatening situation and for the sake of TV I was not told.... I would be beyond furious, and I imagine most of the 'public' would be in agreeement....

That's a point I hadn't thought of before, about how people would have reacted if Jenna had missed on seeing her mother again because the show had withheld information from her about her mother's condition. Unless there's something that the contestants sign that says they agree that no matter what personal crisis goes on in their family, they will stay with the show. There must be some fluidity in the wording, or maybe the producsers were just being compassionate. As we've seen, we now know contestants are allowed to quit.
The whole thing does make you wonder how Jeff felt when this crisis with Jeanna was going on at the same time Johnny Fairplay was making his move on the Pear Islands and faking his Grandmother's death. Strange coincidence that he decided to do that at the same time the real thing was happening for Jenna.

Nobody, since no season of Survivor is out on DVD. ;)

I was referring to these discs. Even a $13 outrageous moment DVD doesn't tempt me once the reunion show has aired.

I thought it was predictably boring for the most part. But the coffee drinking scene was a hoot. It's caffeine, not crack. LOL It's amazing how much that stuff can affect a person when they're not used to it.

I would just rent them on Netflix, I know they have Big Brother on there, I was thinking of renting that since I only started watching big brother last season and could rent the previous season that I heard was pretty good. I just don't know if it would be the same. I am archiving all of Survivor All-Stars to DVD via my Panasonic DMR-E80 with 4 episodes per DVD including the Early Show cast off interviews and a few other interviews and specials. Then if anyone ever want's to see one of the best reality show that was ever made I have it archived. All the new reality shows the other networks are coming out with are just too fake in my opinion. To much over acting and it just doesn't seem real at all. I love Survivor, Amazing Race, and Big Brother though.

And those too frustrated to learn how to connect to irc and download them all for free. And also those that don't like to stay connected 24-7 on irc for their spot in the que line to download (it could take weeks to get them all).

If you are going to rent BB, rent Season 2, with Evil Dr. Will. That was the best season.

So you want to see Richard Hatch in his birthday suit? Not me, I've seen enough.

For every Richard Hatch, there are the "nude for peanutbutter scenes"! Guess it's a tradeoff. I wonder if in the agreements they make with the contestants, that they agree NOT to show them nude EVER!. I mean, at some point they have to get nude, even if it's just with their pants down to "relieve" themselves (not that they'd ever show that).

I agree that it was mostly a throwaway episode. There were three things I liked about it - the mock tribal council was hilarious (Rob C. has Probst down perfectly); unintelligible Tom cracks me up (there's a cartoon character that his speech reminds me of, but I can't quite place it); and the coffee scene was terrific. If there were walls present, they would have been bouncing off of them.

yeah, but you can get the 'peanut butter twins' on the net thanks to Mr. Hefner....

Wonderfalls isn't on there yet but many other series are. It's just a website with many sections of files and one of them happen to be Tv Shows that people upload and you can download. You need a special torrent client to use it though. If you would like to know more about how PM me and I can give you some links.

Could that be Boomhauer from 'King of the Hill?'

What do you mean they are not on there? I guess I go to a different torrent's page (in the UK). Both were up within days of the original airing. I started downloading them on the torrents until someone else posted them in the alt.binaries.multimedia newsgroup, where I could download them much faster.

They are definately up there, i missed wonderfalls #1 and downloaded it to watch before I watch the rest.
The UK TV only one usually has stuff up before the West Coast even sees them live.

You hit the nail on the head! We were cracking up at the Tom scenes because he sounds exactly like Boomhauer. LOL! :D

I thought most of the new scenes were pretty funny. And on the coffee issue, I wonder if they could brew a big pot before a challenge. Of course, if it's a mental challenge it might screw them up, but I wonder if it would help them on the physical challenges?
