The O.C. 3/24 (spoilers)

No thread yet?

This was a pretty good episode. I liked the parody TV show "The Valley" and the parallels they drew. Can't remember all the good lines but I almost fell off the couch when Seth tried to run up the wall.

Posted by: kitsap

I liked Paris Hilton's "Orange County? Eeuuuw!" ... which echoed Summer's comment in the first episode, but flipped it.

Posted by: Hopeless

Good episode, except for the whole storyline about Kirsten's sister. Can't think of her name right now. Why would Ryan feel the need to call home right away, and go through all the other stuff he did?

Also, thank GOD Ryan didn't get into another fight.

Paris Hilton's part was funny, and Seth keeps getting funnier all the time.

I know its not about last night's episode, but I still laugh about "Nothing says Thanksgiving like Mu Shu Pork" (another Seth-ism)

I couldn't help but think of Seinfeld's self-parody while this was going on. I did get a kick out of it.

Ryan called because of two reasons 1) He's been getting into a lot of trouble lately and he wanted to make sure that Sandy/Kirsten knew that he was trying to stay out of trouble. This inevitably would come back to bite him if he didn't "do the right thing" from the beginning. And, 2) Hayley is "family" and Ryan knows the value of a close family. He was trying to be helpful (as always) to bring her back.

Has Rachel Bilson (Summer) lost weight?

Posted by: pmyers

My only problem with this episode was why after Summer just saying that they needed some seperate time..but together, would she invite Seth and Ryan to the party with them?

Posted by: devdogaz

Summer was telling Marissa that she needed to be independent of Ryan. But Summer never mentioned anything about she and Seth spending less time together. So when they got invites to the party, Summer wanted to take Seth and I'm sure she knew Seth would never be able to go if Ryan didn't.

------

Summer: So what am I?

Seth: The Boobs? The Bitch?

Summer: I'll take The Boobs.

maybe I have forgotten being that the show hasn't been on for a few weeks, but didn't Seth and Summer break up?

You need to read the absolutely fabulous (no kidding) episode summaries on fox.com!

In the "Previously on..." bit, they showed Summer (and Marissa?) watching a "Previously on The Valley." Was this just a joke (I don't remember them ever watching this show within a show before)?

Seth rushing out to get the Valley Season one DVD was funny. Possible hint that The OC will be on DVD soon?

I love the self referential parody of the show (Seth boiling down Ryan's role on the show, comments that The Valley is addicting) - the writers really react quickly to what people are saying about the show. Perhaps they are lurking around here. On an unrelated note >ahem< wouldn't it be great if Summer and Marissa became a couple?

The end with Luke blurting out that he was done blanking Julie Cooper was a little too staged. I mean, OK, he is not supposed to be too bright/tactful...and I guess that Marissa was bound to find out at some point, but I was hoping for a few more episodes of her not involved in tearful melodrama.

And what was up with the whole "Camera phones are the autographs for the 21st century" thing?

Any one know of a replay? My SP's had Smallville as a higher priority and they ran the double eps last night so OC got bumped. My mistake. They used to replay them later in the week, but I don't know if they still are.

I liked the one crack about the characters being too old to play high schoolers..... I say that almost every time I watch the show...

Posted by: DeDondeEs

Wasn't the star of "The Valley" played by Colin Hanks? I read a few OC reviews where the charecter Seth is compared to the witty-goofy kid (Colin Hanks)in the movie "Orange County" I think they were making fun of that when Seth was stating that he was "the TV version of me."

I don't think the actors look too old to be playing high schoolers. It's very common for these types of shows to use 20-something actors and this one is no exception. The ages of the actors in this show are:

Mischa Barton (Marissa): 18
Rachel Bilson (Summer): 22
Chris Carmack (Luke): 23
Adam Brody (Seth): Will be 24 in April
Benjamin McKenzie (Ryan): 25

All of them have young enough faces to play high school (IMO), and the one who looks the oldest (Mischa) is actually the youngest.

Yes, that was Colin Hanks.

It was hilarious that Summer actually caused the TV stars' relationship to break up. Has she been linked romantically to Seth in real life only to break up? Now THAT would be self-referential to a whole new level.

The whole Julie/Luke thing was 3,000 times more interesting than Marissa/anyone has been so far this season. I hope she cracks up and goes to a looney bin in Tibet and we aren't subjected to her on the show ever again.

i was thinking these both same things. weird. I'm sure they will put out the OC soon, they'd be really ignorant not too.

I loved, in the "previously on" where they were watching The Valley - you hear a character say, "I don't think I can ever fit in in Tarzana."

My bf also noticed that in the scene where they pan from the Capitol Records Building - they actually use the same music that's used in the beginning of Ocean's 11 when they pan down from the same building. In addition, the door that they get thrown out of at the end - it's the same door as in the club where they're playing poker in the beginning of Ocean's 11.

Wow - that's a sharp eye. Was McG involved in Oceans 11?
.....checking allmovie......
the answer would be No he wasn't involved in Ocean's 11.

More Golden Girl references too. What's up with that? Summer's comment "I want to live in the valley".. To quote Summer (and the Paris Hilton character)... "Ewwww......" :D

Huh, I guess I'm the only one who didn't like the episode. The Hilton character was created strictly for the purpose of having her on the show and added nothing whatsoever to the plot or the characters. Her lines were lame and forced.

I also think it's a little earlier in the series to be doing a self parody. Those should be fourth season episodes at least.

I've been contemplating canceling my SP for the past few episodes, and this ep has moved me one step closer. I'm not sure how much longer I can watch this show that is no longer fresh or funny, but has now become the same melodrama and self-parody week after week.

Most single episode guest star appearances are like this. Besides, she only had like 3 lines, and the Pynchon discussion made it worthwhile.

Why wait? ;-) I think it is great that the show is so self aware and is paying attention to its audience. Since the writers know the audience has observed, for example, that Ryan keeps getting into tortured relationships/fights etc, they can avoid those scenarios (or at least make jokes about it).

My SP has steadily moved up in the rankings. It is now solidly in my top 5 and I almost always watch the show the night it airs. I'm hooked - it's my new 90210!!!

What was the line that Seth used about hearing Colin Hanks music, that was pretty funny..

Also, although Ryan may do some stupid things, i thought he did absolutely the right thing by telling, nay forcing, Luke to end the relationship.

Another terrible overreaction by Marissa.

"Hey Marissa, your mom is doing your ex-boyfriend"

I don't think that would have been the prudent thing to do, especially since Marissa is about as fragile as they come.

-smak-

Posted by: dswallow

So, straight guys... is there some special attraction you might have for women who are weak, helpless, constantly making wrong decisions, unable to fend for themselves, and so fragile you think they'd fall apart to learn an EX-boyfriend was having sex with their mom?

Any number of those traits would likely turn me off. But all of them together? No question. OK, you be nice, you stay friends if the person seems to otherwise be nice; maybe you can help. But do you really want to be dating such a person and having an intimate relationship.

Posted by: Sinuralan

Out of all of Marissa's issues.. there's one by itself that would be enough to make it not work for me. She doesn't trust the word of her bf, and she knowingly does things that make him very uncomfortable and damage their relationship. (all of this working back to the Oliver thing, but also shown in other places here and there).

The rest is very annoying too, and probably adds up to enough to say see ya, but the distrust and disrespect of someone who is supposedly very important to you is a deal breaker on its own.

I enjoyed the ep, but my issue with it: They kept saying there were strippers, but I saw no one stripping or do anything stripper-like. There were pole dancers, and they had a lot more clothes on that girls at beach.

My fave line :

"ok, I'm done having sex with Julie Cooper."

OUCH!!!!! So close, son!

Wierd thing with that ending... I know it wasn't a huge shocker when it happened but when it did, I literally smacked my forehead and let out a tremendous "OHHHHHHH!!" LOL

I don't even remember Marissa's reaction because I was laughing so hard.

One thing I noticed about this show lately is that unlike most soaps, the good and bad guys are not black and white. In fact, there really is not a true villain in the show.

For instance, it seemed early in the series that Julie Cooper was going to be the "bitch" of the show. While she certainly is no saint, she isn't shown as being pure evil like other shows might have set her up to be.

This is a very well-written show and definitely my main guilty pleasure. :)

I just heard today that Summer and Seth HAVE been dating for about 5 months and just recently moved in together....how is that for Irony (if true)?

I only saw the episode once, like a couple of days ago...

The character played by Tom Hanks' son made a toast on his birthday wishing for:

a) A second season or

b) Another season

The ep. has been deleted already, can't confirm it, but if he said a Second season is not making sense for the series to be out on dvd already. I could be horribly wrong (probably am).
