The Apprentice -- 3/25 **SPOILERS**

No thread yet??
Some thoughts...
- The game -- I don't think I really completely understood it until it was over.... Clearly working the VIP check-in counter was the way to go. How did they get "exclusive" rights to do that?
- That little kid -- classic! "A word of advice: Don't sell when it's already sold..." The look on Kwamee's face was priceless...
- The look on Nick's face when Amy said she thought Bill was her strongest competition... Poor guy :(
- The boardroom -- was anyone actually surprised at the outcome? As soon as that team lost I knew Amy would put Katrina up and that Trump would never get rid of Amy.
- Katrina. I have mixed emotions about seeing her go... I won't miss her, but now it's down to only one woman...... Katrina was always whining about something. "My input is never valued." "They always rely on me when they want someone good-looking." (Does she really think she's that hot?) The funny thing about that is that she complains they only treat her as a "pretty face," but then acts all flirty with the car salesman guy. Interesting to see three sides...... How she perceives herself, how she perceives that others perceive her, and how others actually perceive her.
- The giving away of the car rental was a STUPID idea... The tourists would either have already rented a car on their own or would have no interest in doing so. A $1000 giveaway, on the other hand, would be something I'd be interested in...
I am really enjoying this show!!!

I forgot to mention -- Trump's hair on the golf course.......
"A lot of people don't think this is my real hair...."

Yep, another enjoyable episode, though I do have a bone to pick with the people writing the episode descriptions. Since I had already read the description for next week's show, I knew who was getting kicke off as soon as the results of the Trump Taj Mahal contest was announced. Next week's description says that:
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
A romance goes sour
So Katrina had to be the one that went last night, since Nick and Amy are the only ones that could apply to. It pretty much ruined the ending for me.

Glad I didn't read that... Although it really wouldn't have mattered... As soon as Amy's team lost I don't think there was a doubt in my mind how the boardroom would go. I think she figures she'll get one more week's "use" out of Nick before sending him packing.

All good lines, but my favorite was from Bill:
"They got the hookers over here, working my customers"
And he kept mumbling, "vultures"
Edit: put some context to the quote....
Posted by: pmyers
I believe they got exclusive rights to the V.I.P area by simply setting it up ahead a time. Remember them calling people in the bus while the other team slept? Also, they are given a list of "contacts" and that's where they got the casino carpenter (probably the best idea of any of these challanges) and probably all the other equipment.

Ah yes -- I forgot about the bus scene... The guys were working feverishly while the other team looked like a bunch of high school kids coming home from a field trip...

Since my earlier thread got no love: :)
I thought this was an entertaining episode. The ten-year-old's remark to Troy cracked me up.
My overall impression of the show is helped by the fact that it really seems like Trump is weeding out the candidates from worst to best. Unlike other reality shows, where the finalists sometimes have pulled the rug out from more "deserving" contestants early on (realizing that raises the question of who deserves it!), these five are the best. Between my final three of Bill, Amy and Troy, I'm not sure who I'd pick.
But on the other hand, Burnett is an expert at wagging the dog and leading the audience by the nose through his reality-stories, and with Trump's involvement there was no chance that story would end with the audience saying "Trump picked a bozo!" :)

When I found out that Amy was going to be project manager, I knew if they lost Katrina was gone. Has she ever been project manager? If there was ever a time to step up, this was it.
Troy's "good ol' boy" act is now starting to wear on me. Bill and Kwame seem to be the only two with the stones to go toe to toe with The Donald.
Is Caroline starting to freak anyone else out? She never smiles or shows emotion. She looked generally disgusted when the girls admitted to using their "charm" in business.

I like her, and I think she should be disgusted by women using sex to get ahead in business. It might sell houses, but it's not how it needs to be done in corporate America anymore.
Guys get deals done every day without flirting with each other; there's no reason women have to or should do so.

I totally agree.

I love Troy. That guy has come up with some of the best ideas this show has ever had. He can adapt to any situation and is very quick on his feet. I'm not sure he'd make a great CEO, but I definately would make him some VP of anything sales related.

It will be interesting to see how the contestants on Apprentice 2 will stack up to this group. Seems like there have definitely been some GREAT ideas from a few of the candidates...

I am curious how many jobs Trump can give away.
I am most interested to see if some of the losers team up for a venture. Most interesting would be seeing what a Troy/Kwame business would do. That is if they both lose.

I imagine he'll just fire the winner from this year.

I guess he is really only obligated to employee the winner for a year at $150,000 base. Not a bad deal. I also think Trump is going to take more control on Apprentice 2.
Being a Dallas guy I am looking forward to The Benefactor.

Why? NBC is picking up the tab for the salary for the winner. And do you *really* think the winner will be put in charge of anything important? I don't. And since it's just a guaranteed 1 year contract, no need to fire anyone -- just don't renew the contract. Sure, it sounds like semantics, and I'm not trying to be snide, but does anyone really think the winner matters to Trump?

Correction $250,000.00

Katrina was project manager at least once-she was the one who didn't get duped by Troy. That still makes me chuckle.
And Carolyn has freaked me out all along. She's like a cyborg. It's quite creepy. She always has this half smile and really seems to embody the concept of "yes men".
Posted by: Tpfer
And Caroline is only 35. Ouch!!! looks a lot older to me. Can you imagine all the passion in the bedroon with her?

Why do you think the one team only had $300 to give away and the other team had $1000 (plus it looked like other money and prizes)? Where they given a set amount of money and the girls used it to pay for the "hookers"?

I think they could have "used" as much as they wanted. They would have needed to deduct the amount at the end. Say 25 - $1,000 winners, so $25,000 was subtracted from how much the player cards brought in.
So the other team should have negotiated a price on the car, gave it away and deducted X amount from what the player cards brought in.
Posted by: dschwab
I was surprised to learn that Katrina was only 24. On one hand, she looks a few years older, and her career accomplishments are remarkable for someone that age. On the other hand, it does help explain some of her immature behavior, including her ego not allowing her to admit that she was duped.
Also, while she's making her media rounds this week, keep in mind that a blurb in the NY Post included her possibly letting the winner slip. Anyone that really doesn't want things to be spoiled may want to avoid her comments this week.

Well that would make sense as to why Trump was saying they should have given the car away, but I'm not sure they had that much free reign.

How can she let it slip? The winner has not been chosen yet, that happens on the live show April 15th.

I disagree. Trump's no idiot: he's smart about taking advantage of situations that will be to his benefit. Troy, Bill and Amy (my top three, not necessarily in order) are all very talented indivudals - and as any manager will tell you, you want good people working for you.
That doesn't mean he'll put them in charge of his biggest project, or that he won't reconsider their contract at the end of the first year. But I think he will give them a good opportunity.
Personally, I'd like to see the winner be one of the Don's henchmen for Apprentice 2. People change so much when they move into management...
Posted by: pmyers
That would be interesting to see the winner of this season have some type of role in the next season.

The "hookers" line was classic.
After this week, it really is down to the best contestants, IMO.

I love when Trump asked who came up with the stupid rent a car idea...
Amy should have been fired for poor memory...
Seriously...she said "to be honest, I don't recall"... I recall...it was her idea...
That said, I like Amy, and based on the past and present, she was clearly the one to stay...
But if this was the first task out the chute, I think her idea to raffle off a car rental was a pretty "fire-able" decision...

This was a good episode. It funny... I was so frustrated at this show, though. Luckily I was right ;)
See, I've worked our local Auto Show for a few years in a row and if there's anything you learn it's:
a) If you have a big flashy car and a contest people ALWAYS ONLY want to WIN THE CAR!!! Do not try to do anything but as people are upset if they can't WIN the car outright.
b) Spinning wheels are fun. People like the noise and the anticipation. They always have a line.
I knew Troy's team would win based on those two things ;)

As a real estate broker myself, Katrina always ticked me off. She characterizes herself as in the top 5 of agents nationwide, if that was the case, she would be BUCKS UP, she would not need this little show to get a rinky-dink job.
Now, maybe she is top 5 agents nationwide of ABC Real Estate or some other bit player, but certainly not any firm you've ever heard of.
Agents in a decent area, I think she's Florida somewhere, can easily make the kind of money they're offering to the winner. You needn't be in the top tier to make that much.
She was a poser (not a bad one, mind you) but a poser nonetheless.
Posted by: Kylep
I liked her little speech in the cab ride... She really showed her colors. Instead of offering any reason why she would have been a good candidate to keep she just bashed Amy.

I never liked her, but in her defense they probably only air a very small portion of that cab ride exit interview.

I think she said she is among the top 5% of agents in the US.

Very true, I stopped reading the NY Post article when they mentioned that a spoiler of the winner was in the next sentence, so I have no idea what that was about then.

Apparently, she says that the quote in the Post was a total lie fabricated by the PR person for the club she was at.
Details on the link below, but HUGE SPOILER WARNING ABOUT THIS LINK ANYWAY!!! REVEALS DETAILS ABOUT CAST YOU MAY OR MAY NOT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT!!!

Wow. She's a really sore loser-way to spill things about people's personal lives. That took my impression of her down a long ways from the mediocre impression I had before. How catty.
Posted by: Frylock
From the link above, and this is not a spoiler, but shows her so well.
"I cannot confirm the amount, but Playboy did make us an offer," Katrina tells us. "However, it contradicts what I’ve worked so hard to prove in the business world."
Uhhh, selling sex seems to be what she does, as she admitted in the boardroom. But apparently since she can't do it directly for someone, it's different. :)
Posted by: IJustLikeTivo
Don't know what she's smoking but she is sure as hell selling sex. That dress in the E piece as well as virtually everything she wore on the show was about showing how she looks. I can't imagine that working in any job where being taken seriously day after day would matter. In Real Estate, you see a customer for a few days and then never again. In the environment, you could probably get away with all the flirting she does.
Very immature in general. The look on her boyfriends face when she showed off her ring tells me that the marriage will not last.

Especially when you can walk a few feet in the casino and plunk 50 cents into a slot machine that offers the chance to win a flashy car.
What were they thinking???

Bill and Troy won this competition, even though Kwame was PM.
Bill for gaining exclusive VIP access (their RPP -- revenue per player -- was the ONLY reason they won). The wheel (Troy) was also a good promotion to get people to sign up for the card.
My favorite scene was the guy throwing the entry form from the model in the trash.
The producers did a pretty good job keeping up the suspense this week. I almost believed the tiger was going to backfire on the boys.
Katrina, when you're only the PM once, and it's for the Real Estate -- YOUR CHOSEN PROFESSION -- and you LOSE, that's why you get fired. Not because of Amy.
Caroline made a good point - why not get rid of Nick if he's more competition than Katrina?
And it didn't appear either team took the (to me) obvious route -- have the number of entries for whatever contest based on the amount of play. That's how everything works in casinos. Make the contest bigger, too. Those VIPs are playing $500 a HAND in blackjack -- do they really care about a raffle for $1000?
Bill really doesn't seem to like Troy, even after the win......

A couple of observations:
- Even with all the "smart" moves made by Troy, Kwame and Bill on this challenge, and all the "dumb" moves made by Amy, Katrina and Nick, I recall that the final numbers were pretty close.
- Does anyone else think that they didn't actually have a name for this show when they were filming? I noticed that no one actually uses the term "apprentice" ever (with the exception of some post-production voice overs by Trump). Trump is always talking about "running one of my companies" or "being a CEO of one of my companies" but he never says (the more elegant) "be my Apprentice".

I've thought as well about this.....and they really aren't becoming his apprentice. They are just becoming another "C" of one of his corps. When I think apprentice I think of working with him on a daily basis somebody hoping to take over for him. They could have just as well called this show "VP" or something like that.

Like Dave Letterman always joked, why would he wear a toupee/wig that bad? Donald's hair looks so odd because he seems to be doing a rather unweildly comb over. And when you see him from the back, there are some thin spots. I say it's real.
Perhaps he keeps Caroline around because her hair makes his look less bizarre!

Here's a question. Why didn't either team go out and target whales? I know all the big casinos have teams of people that do this-one of them would have beaten the other team. If they could have worked out something with some of those guys, that would have been something else.

Well Troy's team did corner the VIPs. I believe any "whale" would already be a "member" of the casino.

Yeah, but having a show titled, "Just Another Minion" probably wouldn't get the ratings...

Reason I asked is because I saw something on TLC or discovery once about the teams that the casinos have that go after whales. They have all kinds of tricks at their disposal to lure the big money people out of other casinos. Maybe this just isn't common knowledge enough for them to have used it.
Posted by: devdogaz
True "whales" are not that common. It's not like there are dozens of them in any casino at any time. There may only be a couple in a gambling city on any given weekend. And I'm sure that if there were any whales at Trump's casino during that time, the casino staff would have done all they could to keep that whale away from the spectacle going on for the cameras. A whale and his money are extremely important to the casino and I can't imagine they would let some Trump-wannabes divert the attention of their precious whale.

I'd concur with this theory. Whales are your big time spenders, the type that would wager hundreds of thousands, if not millions a day. They have a host take care of everything (the show Las Vegas i think probably does a good representation of how whales are treated... not that I know from experience or anything :D)
VIP are those that have regular trips there and are typically comped a good portion of their stay, but don't necessarily bet even in the thousands. They're just more regular gamblers, as opposed to the one or two timer tourists.
Posted by: YCantAngieRead
Okay, okay, it was a bad idea. Which is why I'm not in business. :) Still would have been interesting to see them try, though.
Posted by: smak
Whales are multi-multi millionaires, maybe even hundreds of millions.
Somebody you'd fly a plane across the country to get, or buy extravagant gifts for.
They can drop millions of bucks in just one visit.
They definately didn't need a whale, they just needed somebody a cut above the regular nickel and dimer.

I definitely enjoy the show. It's interesting that it seems that there is one key decision/idea each week that wins the challenge for a team. This week was (in my opinion) Bill's getting exclusive rights to the VIP line. (the wheel was nice but I don't know how much it helped)
Last week, the decision to get advertising on the pelo-cabs. In the real estate episode, getting the cheaper apartment (which was decided by luck).
I think for most weeks there is a similar idea or action that is the critical, deciding factor.
Posted by: devdogaz
Did Bill actually get exclusive rights to the VIP area? It seems like they said that during a voiceover, but then the other team sent their "hookers" over there to try and sign up players. IIRC, the only person keeping the other team out of the VIP area was Bill himself. That doesn't seem exclusive to me. It simply seems that the other team didn't challenge him on it.
Posted by: JnApop
IIRC Troy ran off one of the "hookers". "Darling I appreciate your efforts.... You're looking pretty as a peach..." and there was a gentleman dressed in a suit that appeared to be "an official" of the casino that made sure she left.
'course, I was still chuckling at Bill muttering "vultures" over and over. :)
