The Practice - 3/28 (spoilers)

Ok, first let me get this off my chest:
DENNY CRANE!
Ah, that's better.
Once again, looking forward to Spader having his own show, and thinking it's time for the Practice to gracefully bow out.

Looks like Rona Mitra is a lock for the "evolution" not spinoff. I kinda sorta get the idea that Camryn Manheim (Eleanor) won't be far behind.
I suspect David E Kelly will be behind the transition and keep writing those surprising brilliant scripts.
Has William Shatner found a new full time job?

The spin-off is apparently Spader, Shatner, and a couple of new people, with Mitra a possibility.

Please bring Mitra back. She doesn't even need a speaking part. :)
I finally watched a mini-marathon of the Practice this weekend, starting with the 3-episode arc where Alan Shore goes home. Man, I wish I had kept this SP this year (I gave up after all the Bobby/Lindsay melodrama). This show was really good!! Even my G/F was impressed (not easy).
Alan is one of the most intriguing characters I've seen on TV in a long while. He's like the Vic Mackey of lawyers! I hope the Practice stays in syndication next year so I can catch repeats of the earlier episodes of this season.

Denny Crane should see Jenny Craig.
I thought the whole premiss of the lawsuit was silly - a law firm hiring a lawyer without a contract. Also, shouldn't the respondent in the case made closing arguments after the plaintiff?

Although the way it worked, they didn't really hire him, exactly, to begin with. His position at first was ambivalent; he was kind of working out of their office without actually being part of the firm. Then, he started bringing in business--lots and lots of business. He became the de facto head of the outfit, simply because he was bringing in almost all their business. And they never acknowledged that, either legally or in their minds.
It was actually kind of cunning how he slipped in, became a de facto associate, then a real associate, then a de facto partner, and they were so dazzled by the money he was bringing in, they didn't let their better judgement guide their decisions until it was too late. As he said at the trial, they knew exactly what he was doing (in terms of his ethically challenged behavior) and let him do it, because it worked and they were getting rich off it.
I thought it was revealing when Ellenor asked Alan, "What do you want?", and he couldn't answer. I wonder if he ever had a plan, or if it all just happened.
But I'm pretty sure David Kelley had a plan...

While I suppose it must happen sometimes, I've never heard of an employment contract between a law firm and a (non-partner) lawyer. Of course, partnership agreements exist, for the partners. But, like employees in most fields, the associates just come to work and get paid.

On the outcome, so what if the jury awarded Shore 2.5 million. He brought in, what, 9 million over the last 6 to 9 months.
What's the problem. Just give him the money. Where is the money?

I find it kind of od that they are doing a spinoff at all. This whole season was basically a spinoff and ABC stilled canned it. Do they really think giving the same show a new name will make a difference?

I stopped watching this show after the episode with the police torture. (I can deal with that in the episode, but what I couldn't deal with was the refusal by the writers to cause any consequences to happen. And there's enough unpunished evil in real life that I don't want to deal with it in my entertainment. It's why I can't read Stirling's books.)
A friend of mine suggested I start watching anyway, because of Shore. I'd liked Spader's character when they first brought him in, and they did develop him well. He shows off David E Kelly's finest trait: writing insane, but superb, lawyers. These were the highlights on PICKET FENCES and ALLY MCBEAL. And also why BOSTON PUBLIC never clicked with me, I suspect.
That said, Shatner just blew. Flat, boring, and no presence. I was disappointed to hear (here) that he's going to be on the spin-off.

Damn! I just accidentally deleted this ep. Anybody got a copy? I'll work out the details with you.
I was watching Star Trek, and hit the left arrow button. I assumed it would give me the Star Trek info, and hit delete. As the item was deleted, it finally registered with me. I'm an idiot.

I think it was a double play, cancel practice and give a green light to the new show at the same time...
They may have kept it around if Alan Shore didn't become a breakout character.

Denny Crane...
Wow. You and I have different ideas of what's flat boring and no presence. I thought he was fantastic, given what he had to say.
...Denny Crane.

It's not going to be the same show. There will be almost no carry-over in cast, and the setting will be new. About the only similarities will be Alan Shore (who is new himself) and the fact that it's about lawyers (although it will be a different kind of lawyers).
And judging from how very little airplay Alan Shore got in the middle of the season, I doubt that they knew they were going to do this very long ago (when I said earlier that David Kelley had a plan, I meant concerning Alan's insinuating himself into the firm, not the transformation of the show).

I dont get it, I read or thought I read that his wrongful termination suit killed Young, Frutt & Berluti(sp). 2.5 million doesnt sound like a KO for the firm.
How many episodes are left to wrap this up?
Where's the walkon for Bobby this year?
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
Four more episodes--and I was surprised as well that the trial ended so abruptly. I wonder what they have in mind for the final four?

Has any show ever made this type of a comeback? I know it is being canceled, but if not for the spinoff there would be an uproar. There has never ever been a show that so jumped the shark and came back like this. This is now one of my three favorite shows of the season (Shield/Arrested Development the others)
Amazing job.

I think it's really 3 epsidoes, with the finale being a 2 hours.

While he had more to say this ep., not sure it falls into "fantastic".
Shore and Crane are working though. And Tara is fitting in perfectly.
One of my favorite DC's of the ep. "We do our sexual harassment behind closed doors."

"I'm always at ease, sir." What does that MEAN, Tara?

So, is James Spader off the Practice now? Can I kill my SP? Or, will he be back and should I wait?

Well, he's the star of the show, so I suspect he's going to be there until the end.
The final four will probably set up the new show...

That part made me giggle... when you stand at attention, one of the things you do is, ahem, push out a bit. This is of course more noticeable with women. Tara was saying she was not doing that -- she was just naturally, ahem, pushed out.

I found myself sort of relieved with this one.
While I found the situation b/t Allan and the Firm totally incredulous... I did like Allan's 'pie' argument credible. That is... based on his contribution his firing and severance was possibly unreasonable and worth taking a look at. OTOH, his tactics risked the firm collecting any of Alan's earnings and possibly exposed them risk that outweighed the Alan's contributions.

In the mid-1960's, Shatner starred as a D.A. in a 1/2 season series, For the People. It came from the same folks who did The Defenders.
By the way, his wife in that series: Jessica Walters.
DENNY CRANE

Apparently, according to tvtome.com, Shatner will be in the last four episodes. The next broadcast won't be until the middle of April though. Don't know how accurate they are, so YMMV.
Point is that I am keeping the SP. The Practice has been one of my favorite shows since Alan Shore joined up.
Denny Crane!

I read about DEK saying that once the season got under way and seemed to be doing well on its own, he decided the walkons were no longer needed to hype the show.

I agree 100%, I had stopped watching a couple seasons ago because I was so bored. Now I even ended up watching the last few commercials on Sunday because I couldn't wait any longer to start watching :)

So we dont get another Practice until 4/18?
Posted by: scooterboy
I'm enjoying this so much I have a new sig.
:)
Posted by: MacThor
Is Lucy the only walkon so far? I've only seen the past five eps.
