Arrested Development 3/28 (Spoilers)

Yet another great epsidode. I loved that they continue with the Annyong jokes but had Lindsey make fun of it, "Like that's not getting old."

The revelation that Tobias had once produced a video series called "Families with Low Self-Esteem" was priceless. First, it got buried next to the GGW-parody "Girls with Low Self-Esteem" and also because he and Lindsey are so insecure. Maeby has the most self-esteem in that family.

Tobias becoming the "don" of the prison and "buying" George Sr. was also great.

GOB's dancing onstage trying to draw people's attention while the yacht sank was hilarious.

Discuss.

I enjoyed the guy with the cardboard sign at Gob's performance, "All Christians must write JOHN 3:16"

Awesome episode. Too much good stuff to list. I'll list a few though. :)

The first scene with Kitty's new chest had me rollings. As did every other Kitty scene following.

George Michael answering the phone "Bluth Company, not Kitty" after his earlier experience was brilliant.

I hate White Power Bill! Everything else in the prison.

Noticing what GOB was doing when George Michael came to see him and was sent away. GOB on stage.

The voice over and Micheal's reaction to understanding that George Michael looked up to and respected GOB.

George Michael's reaction when Michael fired him.

Posted by: harvscar

"Talk you off what, Pop pop?"

My favorite line this episode.

Posted by: MitchO

GOB saying "You'll never see these again" was mine~.

Actually, it was Lucille (the mother) who had that line. She's the character who has grown the most on me since the show's inception.

So, now we're certain that Gob's theme song is "The Final Countdown" by Europe. It's lodged in my head since watching the show. The thing I noticed about Kitty's "enhancement"...her nips line up pretty much like her eyes do when she takes off her glasses. :D

I can't say enough about how great this show is. Or how much I will loathe Fox if they cancel it.

It seems like it has enough critical attention and Hollywood buzz (look at all the cameos) to get some Emmy nominations. I don't need it to last ten years, but a couple more of this caliber would be nice... with a big extra-loaded DVD set at the end. ;)

Don't forget Tobias's rendition of 'Over the Rainbow.' I don't usually laugh out loud at something while I'm watching alone, but that made me do it.

Posted by: Redleg

Thanks David, I forgot about that:

"Somewhere over the rainbow... is another rainbow..."

Absolutely one of those shows that's just as funny the second time you watch. For example, I missed the John 3:16 sign last night and meant to look for it on the replay.

Everyone in prison is a Friend of Dorothy! Genius.

I think my favorite line was George Michael's "Talk you off what, Pop Pop?" and then the following "Bluth Company, not Kitty" was great too.

I read an article in Entertainment Weekly this week that gave a joke I never even realized before. Mabey's made up sister is named Surely! I don't know if they've ever shown it written but I guess I always assumed it was Shirley. I never got the connection until now!

Posted by: Zevida

This is the second time we've seen GOB's magic act (the first was in Storming the Castle) and both times it consisted of him dancing around the stage, waving colored handkerchiefs around, flashing a deck of cards, running back and forth with a knife in his teeth, but never actually doing any magic.

His show cracks me up, that's probably my favorite part of the episode.

Also GM answering the phone at the Bluth company, his lines were awesome.

Actually, it's "Maeby" and "Shurely". I believe we saw it written on a banner a couple of weeks ago. Clever people, I tell ya!

Because he is quite possibly the smartest one of the whole bunch!

I'm pretty sure it was "must unite," which makes slightly more sense. :D

The newscaster who they've had in a few episodes is John Beard (and who actually got to do some acting in this episode), who is an actual anchorman on the Fox affiliate here in L.A. And in the newscasts seen on the show, the graphics they use are just like the station's actual news graphics, except they have a "Fox 6" logo instead of "Fox 11."

Therefore, when this episode started off with a fake newscast, my first thought was, "Oh, no! They're interrupting 'Arrested Development' for a special report!"

I have an excuse, my fox IS Fox 6 (although, red/black logo, not blue/white)!

On rewatching this episode, great lines, or ones I missed the first tme.

The "H. Maddas" cooler. Spelled backwards, it's Saddam H.

Gob: It's a new trick, so I'm still kinda tweaking my nipple thing

Lindsay: You split the money with me 60-40
Maeby: 55-55
Lindsay: Deal
Michael: Sounds like you're getting more than you think.

What's the joke on James Lipton saying the only man he's ever called a coward is Brian Doyle-Murray?

Posted by: smak

I think they slipped a really great one by, and not many people caught it.

George Sr. visits Tobias in his cell after he becomes "dorothy"

Tobias " I thought the two of us should talk, MAN ON MAN"

And the full joke from James Lipton was:

"The only man i've called a coward is Brian Doyle-Murray. I call you....television actor"

Tobias: "Ouch"

:D:D:D

No, it's Surely. Ref: 14m into Shock & Aww, and 19m into Alter Egos.

Also, the web site refers to the adopted son as An Yang, but Lucille wrote his name out as Annyong. Not sure why there's a discrepancy.

hands down the smartest and funniest show on TV. if fox cancel's this, they are out of their mind.

i would LOVE if they made a DVD set and had commentary from actors or directors you could turn on to check and see if we missed any jokes. i'd say alot of people miss little things, things maybe we aren't even supposed to understand.

i recently re-watched the "huge mistake" episode with Marta, and they showed GOB riding by the window outside the model home in his segway. haha.

I was laughing so hard at that, I nearly fell off my couch. I love GOB!

I swear if they cancel this show, I'm not watching FOX anymore.

I never give in and start watching these "on the fence" shows right away. I really wanted to watch "Skin" earlier this year, I thought the premise was very interesting. However, I had a feeling it would never make it and never watched the three episodes I had saved on the TiVo. I deleted them after it was cancelled.

AD looked the same way, advance word was good and the previews were excellent. BUt something told me it would never fly with a mass audience. But I just couldn't resist and started watching immediately.

Hmmm...sounds to me it's not Fox that's the problem. YOU'RE the problem! :D

Yes, this was another great one! Trying to recap the best of this show is tough!

"Talk you off what, poppop?" It was perfect.

Posted by: MitchO

I almost forgot the Brian Doyle Murray comment. I wonder what the history behind that is? I mean, if you've ever seen the one and only movie that Brian starred in, instead of playing the usual supporting character for his brother, a lot of bad words would come to mind .. but coward isn't one of them :)

Posted by: mwhip

I was fascinated by James Lipton's beard. It looked like his nose hair started it and then spread to his face, I had to pause and look at it closer.

Yeah, but I did watch AD right away and have been telling everyone about it.

I'm doing my part, man! :)

Equally funny is his choice of music - hair bands from the 80's. My wife was laughing out loud at it, and it only got worse when I told her who sang the song in GOB's act:

Europe, "The Final Countdown."

Ah, my misspent youth in the 80's is now a benefit. Who knew?

I definitely miss things, since I sometimes find hilarious jokes in these threads that I didn't catch while watching the episodes. I need to start paying closer attention.

Until you mentioned that, I didn't realize that it was him in the restaurant who got up and left. I guess I wasn't quite paying attention right at that second. But it does explain why I was confused about the "I" Witness CG when he was reading the "news" and why he mumbled the "sources say."

Also... wasn't there something, um, a bit odd about the placement of Kitty's nipples under her shirt at the office? I assume that was intentional, to emphaSIZE the difference...

Posted by: SparkleMotion

I don't think that was it at all...it was to show she got a hack boob job...which, IMO, is why nobody she flashed smiled or anything. Everyone (to a man) just stared but not too appreciatively. She was definitely "off center". Some women are that way naturally...but I suspect she was that way because of a poor enhancement.

Posted by: jlb.x

That definitely makes more sense, though we don't really get to see the reaction of many others to her flashing. The elevator closes before we really see the water guy react and Michael seems only frustrated by her leaving.

"Up here, Michael."

I loved how he called her sickness a "chest thing" at the house. Great stuff.

Posted by: Zevida

Speaking of jokes that we miss, when Kitty flashes Michael in the elevator, he then turns around and says "That's the seventh nipple I've seen today." So he saw GOB's two earlier, he saw Kitty's two when they were standing in the office, the he saw Kitty's two again in the elevator. So who's got the odd nipple??

Did anyone else catch that joke and the meaning behind it? I'm stumped.

Posted by: DLiquid

I was wondering about the nipple joke, too.

Posted by: SparkleMotion

One of GOB's was obscured/colored over with lipstick/crayon/marker for the trick, maybe?

The closed captions say "Annyong" as well, so I blame whoever wrote the web site.

Aren't her eyes off kilter in the same manner? I assumed that in addition to indicating the poor job done, it was kind of mirroring her lazy eye syndrome.

Since it's a transliteration from Korean, there's probably a couple of acceptable ways to spell it with our Western alphabet.

When I lived in Korea, the city I was in was spelled Pusan on some maps and Busan on some others (but the Korean characters were always the same ;) )

I watched the episode again tonight and it's got to be one of my favorites (I think I say that every time!). Is anyone else seriously excited about seeing George Sr.'s twin brother? No way this show is going to reference that and then drop it (unlike most comedies). I would be really suprised if he doesn't show up in the next few episodes.

Also, I'm still not sure about the seven nipples. At one point while Michael is talking to GOB, one of GOB's nipples is exposed and his shirt is covering the other one...my TV's close captioning also seems to think that Michael said "that's like the seventh nipple I've seen" so maybe he was just exaggerating.

I love GM's line when Michael asks what George Sr. said: "Well if I clean it up then it won't really be a sentence." Also, Georege Sr. to Tobia: "Get your f*cking hands off me." (beautifully bleeped so we all know exactly what he said.)

The only downside of this episode was no Buster. But the episode was so good, I didn't even notice until it was over! It seems that sometimes Buster and Tobias will swap episodes, so that one will be in it and one won't, then they switch the next week, then they are both in it the third week, then they recycle again.

Here's a question: was there a twin brother on the Bluth family tree the prosecutors had set up in the previous episode?

Posted by: smak

They actually missed a joke at the end, when Kitty was floating in the water, she should have just been floating due to her own "enhancements" without the cooler.

smak,

I thought the same thing... :)

And as he left, he was mumbling something to the effect of, "Can't become part of the story...can't become part of the story." I wonder if that's something he does in real life, when it looks like something newsworthy is about to happen. :D

Posted by: Frank_M

You'll also notice that when he filed his report the graphic on the bottom of the screen called it an "I" Witness report. Funny.
